PART 26 – Melissa Learned the Difference Between Protecting Ethan and Protecting Herself From Losing Him Again

After reading David’s journal, Ethan asked Melissa something difficult.

“Did you ever feel like I belonged to you?”

Melissa did not answer immediately.

That was why I trusted her answer.

An easy answer would have been defensive.

“No.”

Or:

“Of course not.”

Instead she thought.

“Yes.”

Ethan looked down.

She continued quickly.

“Not because I believed you were mine.”

“Then why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

The honesty was painful.

“But I know that isn’t enough.”

Ethan nodded.

“What did you think would happen?”

Melissa looked toward the window.

“I thought if I wasn’t everything you needed, I would disappear.”

“You mean after Dad died?”

“Partly.”

She took a breath.

“And partly before.”

Ethan waited.

“My own mother spent years trying to keep peace in our house.”

“You told me.”

“Yes.”

“She taught me that love meant preventing people from leaving.”

Melissa looked at him.

“I carried that into motherhood.”

Ethan absorbed that.

“You thought if I needed Grandma, I didn’t need you.”

“Yes.”

“But I needed both.”

“I know.”

The simplicity of that answer mattered.

Not “I know now.”

Just:

I know.

She had stopped defending the past.

That was a major difference.

Later, Melissa told me something.

“I used to think being a mother meant being chosen first.”

“And now?”

“Now I think being a mother means being someone your child can choose freely.”

That was one of the most important changes I had ever witnessed.

Love without freedom is fear wearing a different name.
