PART 5 — The Daughter Hidden for Forty Years

Rebecca boarded the ship the next morning. She was forty-two, a school librarian from Savannah, and had Arthur’s unmistakable gray eyes.

She did not ask Eleanor for money. She asked for forgiveness.

Rebecca explained that her mother had refused contact with Arthur after he married Eleanor. Years later, Arthur found Rebecca and quietly paid for her education. They met only a handful of times. He wanted to tell Eleanor, but shame always defeated courage.

She wanted to trade information for protection. Ryan, she claimed, had obtained access to one account Arthur forgot to secure. By midnight, he planned to transfer three million dollars and make it appear that Eleanor had authorized it.

Eleanor looked toward the dark horizon.

Her escape had become a race.
