I will never forget the sound of Robert Harrison's voice coming from that laptop.
I had never met him.
He died before Daniel and I married.
But I had seen his photographs throughout the mansion.
I knew his face.
I knew what he meant to Daniel.
And now, five years after his death, we were listening to him speak.
Daniel sat at his father's desk.
He barely moved.
Robert looked directly into the camera.
He seemed tired.
There was something heavy about his expression.
But he spoke clearly.
He began by telling Daniel that Richard had been taking money from Harrison Enterprises.
Not once.
Not by accident.
For years.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Robert explained that he had discovered transfers he had not approved.
The money had moved through companies created to conceal where it was going.
The transactions were connected to fraudulent business arrangements.
He had examined enough records to know something was seriously wrong.
And the person he believed responsible was his own younger brother.
Richard.
Daniel lowered his head.
I could see how hard it was for him to hear.
His uncle had helped him build his career.
He had stood beside him after Robert died.
He had advised him through difficult business decisions.
All that time, Richard had been hiding the truth.
Robert continued.
He explained that he had confronted his brother.
He wanted Richard to account for the missing money.
Instead, Richard threatened him.
He said he would destroy what Robert had spent his life building.
I looked at Daniel.
His hands rested motionless beside the laptop.
I wondered whether he was thinking about every conversation he had shared with his uncle.
Every business decision.
Every time he had trusted Richard's advice.
Robert paused in the recording.
Then he explained that he had kept evidence.
The documents on the flash drive would show what he had uncovered.
Bank records.
Internal communications.
Financial reports.
Everything he had gathered before his death.
Daniel wiped his face.
I expected Robert to keep talking about the company.
But then his voice changed.
He began speaking about something other than money.
Family.
He wanted Daniel to understand that wealth was not the most important thing in his life.
He warned him about allowing pride and anger to damage the people who cared about him.
I felt those words more deeply than I expected.
I was standing in the study holding Lily.
Only a short time earlier, Daniel had done exactly what his father was warning against.
He had allowed anger to decide how he treated me.
He had believed the worst.
He had told me to leave.
And now he was listening to his father's voice telling him not to sacrifice his family for money or pride.
Daniel began crying.
Robert spoke about his own mistakes.
He admitted that he and Margaret had not always made the right decisions.
He did not pretend they had been perfect parents.
But he wanted his son to do better.
To become a better man than they had managed to be.
Then the recording ended.
No dramatic sound followed.
The screen simply stopped showing Robert speaking.
Daniel remained in his chair.
I stood nearby.
Neither of us said anything.
For several minutes, he stared at the laptop.
I knew he wanted his father back.
I knew there were questions he would never be able to ask him.
But I also knew that Robert had left something important behind.
Not just evidence against Richard.
A warning.
I looked down at Lily.
She was still sleeping against me.
I wondered whether Daniel understood why his father's message had affected me.
I didn't ask.
I wasn't ready.
Eventually, Daniel moved.
He opened one of the folders.
Then another.
The screen filled with financial records.
There were transfers connected to accounts Daniel did not recognize.
There were company documents.
There were emails.
There were reports showing how money had been moved.
Daniel examined them carefully.
I watched his expression change as he read.
Robert's recording had prepared us for what we would find.
But seeing the documents was different.
The evidence pointed toward Richard's involvement in a long-running financial scheme.
Money had been transferred through concealed accounts.
Fraudulent contracts helped disguise the transactions.
And Richard's position as chief financial officer had given him the opportunity to manipulate the records.
Daniel had trusted the man responsible for overseeing the company's money.
That same man was now accused of taking millions.
I thought about the two million dollars Daniel believed I had stolen.
The amount that had nearly destroyed my marriage.
The amount that had caused him to look at me as though I were a stranger.
I could not stop thinking about the documents Margaret had asked me to sign.
She had told me they were for Lily's health insurance.
I believed her.
I had no reason to think my information could be used in a company transaction.
Yet someone had used my credentials to authorize the missing transfer.
And Daniel had accepted that as proof against me.
I watched him close one document and open another.
He looked exhausted.
So did Margaret.
She remained nearby, wiping her eyes.
I wondered how long she had been living with fear of Richard.
But knowing she was frightened didn't erase what she had done to me.
She had known more than she admitted.
And she had let Daniel blame me.
Daniel reached for his phone.
He contacted the company's attorneys.
His voice was different now.
Controlled.
Serious.
He explained that he had found evidence of financial misconduct involving a senior company officer.
He wanted the documents preserved and examined.
He wanted experienced financial investigators involved.
And he wanted the missing two million dollars traced.
I stood quietly while he spoke.
This was the Daniel I recognized from his work.
Careful.
Decisive.
Focused on getting answers.
I wished he had used even a small part of that care when he questioned me.
Instead, he had shouted.
He had made accusations.
He had refused to hear my explanation.
That difference stayed with me.
When the call ended, Daniel looked at the screen again.
His father's face was no longer there.
Only the folders remained.
He looked toward me.
"Emma."
I waited.
"I should have listened."
His words were quiet.
I believed he meant them.
But I didn't know what to say.
I had wanted those words earlier.
Before the accusation.
Before Lily woke crying.
Before he ordered us out.
I looked down at our daughter.
Then I looked at him.
"You should have."
Daniel nodded.
He didn't try to defend himself.
For the first time that afternoon, he seemed to understand that proving Richard's guilt would not automatically repair what had happened between us.
The financial truth was beginning to emerge.
The damage inside our marriage was already there.
And I knew one thing.
I could not simply return to the way things had been that morning.
