my ownership.

My father had legally acknowledged and raised me.

His estate specifically named me.

The protected interests had been assigned directly.

The old agreements, read as a whole, focused on succession of legal interests rather than genetic testing.

Ethan's protections remained.

The bomb Evelyn kept for decades was mostly smoke.

Adrian stared at the paternity file.

“She planned to use this to make me think Mara was lying about who she was.”

Arthur nodded.

“And to make you believe Ethan's rights were fraudulent.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“It might have worked.”

I looked at him.

“Would it?”

He thought.

The old Adrian might have reacted before asking a lawyer.

Before checking documents.

Before asking me.

Evelyn knew that.

He finally said, “Back then?”

“Yes.”

“Maybe.”

Painfully honest.

“And now?”

He looked at me.

“Now I'd read the papers.”

Ethan would approve.

Arthur spent the afternoon telling me about Thomas.

Not the saint version.

The real one.

He borrowed money and forgot to repay it.

He loved motorcycles.

He hated formal dinners.

He changed careers three times.

He once disappeared to Peru for four months without telling Arthur.

“He sounds irresponsible.”

“He was.”

“Great.”

“You wanted truth.”

“I did.”

“He was also kind.”

Arthur looked toward the photographs.

“And he loved you.”

That night, I placed one photograph on my bookshelf.

Thomas holding me at five.

Not replacing my father's photograph.

Beside it.

There was room for both.

Before leaving, Arthur stopped at the door.

“You angry with me?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“That doesn't mean we're done talking.”

“I know.”

“I may stay angry.”

“You're allowed.”

I looked at him.

“Did Thomas know about the Voss-Maren dispute?”

“Some.”

“Did he help with any of the preservation work?”

Arthur hesitated.

My stomach dropped.

“Arthur.”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He was the one who introduced Celeste to Union Exchange.”

Another connection.

Of course.

Thomas had helped create the document-preservation network.

Not because I was Maren by blood.

Because I was his daughter by biology and my father's daughter by life.

He protected the rights my father intended for me.

Arthur handed me one final envelope.

“Thomas wrote this for Robert.”

Inside was a single page.

If Mara ever becomes the point where Voss and Maren meet, do not let anyone use my biology to tell her she belongs less to the man who raised her.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

Evelyn had preserved the paternity file as a weapon.

Thomas had anticipated exactly that.

And decades earlier, the man whose existence I had never understood had already written the answer.

<a
