I can manage it through him.<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I had never said those words.<\/p>\n<p>David paused the file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll need forensic audio analysis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adrian stared at the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey made this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore the divorce?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you had taken the settlement\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey probably wouldn&#39;t have needed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if you refused?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey could release it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The structure became clear.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement was never simply an offer.<\/p>\n<p>It was the easy path they expected me to take.<\/p>\n<p>If I resisted, they had a campaign ready to redefine me.<\/p>\n<p>Greedy wife.<\/p>\n<p>Manipulative mother.<\/p>\n<p>Woman exploiting a supposedly disabled child to seize a company.<\/p>\n<p>A story simple enough for the public to understand.<\/p>\n<p>And false enough to destroy us.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the filename again.<\/p>\n<p>FINAL.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had considered it ready.<\/p>\n<p>Then David opened the metadata.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCreated on Daniel\u2019s workstation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adrian swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cModified later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe account belongs to Evelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The evidence tightened again.<\/p>\n<p>But something else bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t they release it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe divorce became contested. I refused the settlement. The exact contingency they planned happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething stopped them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David searched the surrounding messages.<\/p>\n<p>Then found one from Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa to Evelyn:<\/p>\n<p>Do not release audio. It won&#39;t survive analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn:<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#39;t need to survive court.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa:<\/p>\n<p>It needs to survive a week. It won&#39;t survive an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Another message followed.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa:<\/p>\n<p>Daniel used archived interview clips. Mara&#39;s cadence changes between sentences. Anyone competent will hear it.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa had protected me.<\/p>\n<p>Not out of loyalty.<\/p>\n<p>Probably self-preservation.<\/p>\n<p>But she had stopped Evelyn from using fabricated audio publicly.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Then came Evelyn\u2019s reply.<\/p>\n<p>If you undermine me again, your position ends with the divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Remove Vanessa from the structure.<\/p>\n<p>Now the sequence made sense.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa had challenged the plan.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn marked her for removal.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel copied the message.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa panicked.<\/p>\n<p>The structure fractured.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme did not collapse because one person suddenly became good.<\/p>\n<p>It collapsed because selfish people stopped trusting one another.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s voice came from the monitor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s usually how bad partnerships end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all looked toward him.<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve had ninety-one years to watch people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The meeting adjourned.<\/p>\n<p>Later, Adrian found me alone in the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would have survived that audio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s your word again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could have cost me custody credibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>He had not considered that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf people believed I was using Ethan financially, they could have challenged every decision I made for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother planned to take both of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence sat between us.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked quietly, \u201cWhy didn&#39;t you tell me to go to hell years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat simple?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the mansion.<\/p>\n<p>The dinners.<\/p>\n<p>The school pickups.<\/p>\n<p>The apologies that fixed nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The good days that made the bad days easier to excuse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kept thinking the man I married would come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He absorbed that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe he never existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adrian looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were generous sometimes. Funny. Curious. You loved difficult problems.
