More U.S. and Asia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept walking slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you\u2019re the best fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer still had power.<\/p>\n<p>Years earlier, being needed would have made the decision for me.<\/p>\n<p>Now it simply became information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen do you need an answer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another annoying person being reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>I called Mom last.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got an offer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromotion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She brightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCleveland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>A dozen old reactions could have followed.<\/p>\n<p>Come home.<\/p>\n<p>I need you.<\/p>\n<p>That would be wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>We could see each other all the time.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Mom said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you feel about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConflicted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want the job?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want Cleveland?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you need from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question stunned me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you came back, what boundary would make it easier?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>She had understood the real problem before I explained it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably no assumption that I\u2019m me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not need you six minutes away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad we agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin snores anyway. You\u2019d leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUseful information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom became serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNaomi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you reject the job because you love Lisbon, reject it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you reject it because you\u2019re afraid of us, don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That hit hard.<\/p>\n<p>Years earlier, Mom had used fear to keep me close.<\/p>\n<p>Now she was telling me not to let fear keep me away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called Brent the following night.<\/p>\n<p>He reacted differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCleveland?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you seen the winters?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou live in Indiana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly. I have evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSerious answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it would be weird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d worry you came back because of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m not moving in with Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know you don\u2019t owe us proximity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if you move back, I don\u2019t get to use it as evidence we\u2019re all fixed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like having you closer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That honesty mattered too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe too, sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t push.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed.<\/p>\n<p>For the next week, I walked through Lisbon as though I were memorizing it.<\/p>\n<p>The yellow light.<\/p>\n<p>The sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p>The hills I complained about.<\/p>\n<p>The caf\u00e9 where Brent and I first sat together after his release.<\/p>\n<p>My apartment.<\/p>\n<p>The print.<\/p>\n<p>The spare key In\u00eas still carried.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving would hurt.<\/p>\n<p>That did not make it wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Staying would be good.<\/p>\n<p>That did not make it right.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent much of my adult life searching for decisions with morally obvious answers.<\/p>\n<p>Pay or abandon Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Stay or be selfish.<\/p>\n<p>Leave or destroy the family.<\/p>\n<p>Forgive or be cruel.<\/p>\n<p>Real maturity, I was discovering, meant choosing between multiple acceptable lives.<\/p>\n<p>No villain required.<\/p>\n<p>I accepted the job on the thirteenth day.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s response:<\/p>\n<p>Knew it.<\/p>\n<p>I replied:<\/p>\n<p>You absolutely did not.<\/p>\n<p>He sent:<\/p>\n<p>Fair.<\/p>\n<p>I told In\u00eas in person.<\/p>\n<p>She cried.<\/p>\n<p>Then insulted Ohio for twenty minutes.<\/p>\n<p>I let her.<\/p>\n<p>Mom cried too.<\/p>\n<p>For different reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Brent sent me a photograph of a snow shovel.<\/p>\n<p>Caption:<\/p>\n<p>Welcome home.<\/p>\n<p>I replied:<\/p>\n<p>I can still change my mind.<\/p>\n<p>He answered:<\/p>\n<p>Too late.
