Ventures had been closed.<\/p>\n<p>No new liability to me.<\/p>\n<p>No additional claim against Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Remaining restitution continued under the criminal judgment.<\/p>\n<p>I read the message twice.<\/p>\n<p>Final.<\/p>\n<p>The legal aftermath that had shaped years of our lives was narrowing to administration.<\/p>\n<p>I called Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She understood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost everything civil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us celebrated.<\/p>\n<p>The end of danger can feel strangely quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do we do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom asked.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not used to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe neither.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We stayed on the phone anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Not solving.<\/p>\n<p>Not planning.<\/p>\n<p>Just talking.<\/p>\n<p>Later that night, Brent called.<\/p>\n<p>Mom had told him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got the news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you feel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent years thinking if the lawsuits disappeared, everything would be fixed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re basically gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Consequences can end before identity catches up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Brent was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep paying restitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t start a company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds wise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd try to become somebody whose family doesn\u2019t have to wonder what he\u2019s doing when he closes a laptop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Not because it was tragic.<\/p>\n<p>Because it was specific.<\/p>\n<p>The hallway.<\/p>\n<p>The closed screens.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Trust destroyed in ordinary gestures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re getting there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said it before deciding whether I should.<\/p>\n<p>Brent became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not finished.<\/p>\n<p>Not absolved.<\/p>\n<p>Not safe forever.<\/p>\n<p>Getting there.<\/p>\n<p>He breathed out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>I looked around my apartment.<\/p>\n<p>Years earlier, I had left Ohio believing distance would solve everything.<\/p>\n<p>It did not.<\/p>\n<p>What solved anything was responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>Mine for my life.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s for hers.<\/p>\n<p>Brent\u2019s for his.<\/p>\n<p>Distance merely gave us room to discover it.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feeleverystory.online\/?p=9339\">Click here to continue reading: PART 26: When Mom Finally Stopped Asking Whether She Had Been a Good Mother, I Saw How Shame Had Kept Her Trapped Too<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following spring, Brent called me on a Wednesday night while I was packing for a work trip to Brussels.
