that.”

The old me might have comforted him.

Said Dad would forgive.

Said people make mistakes.

Said he was not defined by the worst thing he did.

Instead, I said:

“Maybe you don’t start with forgiveness.”

He looked at me.

“What do I start with?”

“Living differently.”

He nodded slowly.

“That’s what they tell us in the program.”

“Then they’re smarter than I am.”

“Debatable.”

By the fourth day, I was emotionally exhausted.

But I did not want the visit to end in anger.

That mattered.

We had lunch before his flight.

At the end, Brent stood outside the restaurant with his suitcase.

The symbolism was almost too obvious.

I noticed.

So did he.

He looked down at it.

“Full circle.”

“Don’t.”

“Right.”

He smiled.

Then became serious.

“Can I hug you?”

I froze.

Not because I did not want to.

Because he asked.

There had been a time when Brent took access to everything.

Money.

Documents.

Mom’s house.

My identity.

Now he asked before touching me.

“Yes.”

We hugged.

It was brief.

Awkward.

Real.

When we separated, he wiped his eyes and pretended he had not.

“Thanks for letting me come.”

“Thanks for respecting the rules.”

“I was terrified.”

“Good.”

He laughed.

“Still mean.”

“Sometimes.”

He picked up his suitcase.

“Do you think I can come again?”

There it was.

A future question.

My old instinct searched for the correct answer.

The kind one.

The safe one.

The boundary.

Then I realized I did not have to decide the future at an airport curb.

“Ask me later.”

Brent nodded.

“Okay.”

No pressure.

He left.

I watched him walk toward the taxi line.

For years, I had needed him to be the villain because villains were easier to leave.

Now he looked like my brother.

Flawed.

Responsible for real harm.

Trying.

That was harder.

But maybe harder was closer to truth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: When My Mother Faced Her First Real Emergency Alone, She Proved Our Family
