Thomas’s church letter.

“Yes.”

Then he asked about Helen.

“What about her?”

Mercer looked troubled.

“He asked whether you backing.

Not Helen’s handwriting.

Pike’s.

An agreement.

Dated months after Helen lost the house.

It showed Harlan Pike transferring a substantial dollars.

Marcus had not told us.

Neither had the records we had seen.

“What was the settlement for?” I asked.

Ortiz turned the page.

There was one handwritten phrase.

In exchange for silence regarding Helen Whitmore foreclosure irregularities.

I felt cold.

Marcus had known Pike cheated his mother.

And Pike had paid him to stay quiet.

Marcus was not merely a victim who joined the man who hurt his family.

At nineteen, Marcus took money to bury what Pike had done to Helen.

The story he had used to justify his whole life had another ending.

He had sold his mother’s truth.
