video that night.

Emily came with me.

Not because I needed backup.

Because Lacey had made the recording for both of us, and Emily wanted to see what Jeremy heard in it.

We sat in our living room.

Jeremy on the couch.

Emily in the chair.

Me beside him.

No one spoke while Lacey appeared on screen.

Jeremy smiled immediately.

A sad, involuntary smile.

“She hated that scarf.”

Emily looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“I bought it.”

She stared.

“That explains it.”

Jeremy almost laughed.

Then the video continued.

When Lacey admitted enjoying his secrecy, Jeremy lowered his eyes.

When she admitted wanting to be Lacey Tolley once, he covered his mouth.

When she said the second marriage had not been legally necessary, he did not look at me.

I watched him anyway.

He had told me it was not only about insurance.

He had eventually admitted desire mattered.

But hearing Lacey say it removed the last protective layer.

They had both wanted the ceremony.

Different reasons.

Same choice.

When Lacey said she had taken my right to know and Jeremy had let her, he nodded once.

No defense.

When she said Jeremy could not be stolen because he had choices, his face tightened.

Emily looked at him.

He kept watching.

Then came Lacey's line about guilt becoming a full-time occupation.

Emily laughed.

I did too.

Jeremy pointed toward the screen.

“Rude.”

It was the stopped smiling.

When the video ended, the room remained quiet.

Emily waited.

I waited.

Jeremy stared at the black screen.

Finally he said, “She knew.”

“What?” Emily asked.

“That she didn't need the marriage.”

“Yes.”

“I knew too.”

There.

No me.

“But there were other ways.”

My chest tightened.

“Why didn't you tell me that earlier?”

“Because it made me look them.”

He nodded.

“Guilt.”

“Okay.”

“Love.”

That hurt.

I nodded anyway.

“History.”

“Yes.”

“Because she was dying.”

“Yes.”

“Because she asked.”

“Yes.”

“And because some part of me wanted to know what it would've felt like if we'd made a different choice at twenty.”

There.

The truth beneath everything.

Emily looked down.

I breathed through the pain.

“Did you imagine leaving ashamed.

“Emotionally?”

“Yes.”

“Sometimes.”

I nodded.

“Legally I knew it was impossible.”

“Yet you signed.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because in that room, with her sick and scared, consequences outside the room felt far away.”

That explanation did not excuse anything.

But I understood it.

People do not always destroy trust because they have a grand plan.

Sometimes they narrow the world until only one Yes.”

“I mean three years ago.”

“No.”

Another pause.

“I think she wanted proof that the life she lost had been possible.”

Emily looked toward the black screen.

“That sounds sad.”

“It was.”

“And selfish.”

“Yes.”

Jeremy did not defend Lacey either.

That mattered.

Emily asked, “Did you love her when she died?”

Jeremy's eyes filled.

“Yes.”

I felt the word.

Still.

After everything.

But it no longer frightened me the same way.

Emily looked at me.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

Jeremy turned.

“You don't have to be.”

“I know.”

I looked at him.

“I don't need you to stop having loved her to prove you love me.”

His face softened.

That sentence would have been impossible for me months earlier.

Maybe impossible because months earlier he had still been lying.

Love is less threatening when truth is not competing with it.

Emily reached into her bag.

“I brought something.”

She produced Lacey’s ring.

The one from the second ceremony.

Jeremy stared.

“I thought you were keeping that.”

“I am.”

She held it out.

“But I need you to do something first.”

“What?”

“Tell me about it.”

Jeremy took the ring.

Small.

Simple.

Not expensive.

A thin gold band with a tiny stone.

“Where did you buy it?”

“Pawn shop.”

Emily blinked.

“Seriously?”

“Lacey would've killed me if I spent much.”

“That tracks.”

“How much?”

“Hundred and twenty.”

“Romantic.”

Jeremy smiled.

“She picked it.”

“Why that one?”

“She said it looked like something a nineteen-year-old version of her would've chosen.”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“Did she wear it?”

“Sometimes.”

“Not at the hospital?”

“Usually on a chain.”

Emily nodded.

“Did you have one?”

Jeremy looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.”

I had not known.

Emily saw my face.

“Where is it?”

Jeremy stood.

Went upstairs.

Returned carrying a small envelope.

Inside was a plain silver band.

He placed it on the table.

I stared.

“You kept it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I didn't know what to do with it.”

“Did you wear it?”

“Never around here.”

The sentence stung.

He corrected himself.

“I wore it at the ceremony.”

“Anything else?”

“A few times at Vanderbilt.”

I nodded.

No more blank spaces.

Emily picked it up.

“Can I have this too?”

Jeremy looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because neither ring belongs in a drawer where everybody is ashamed of it.”

That silenced us.

She put Lacey’s gold band beside Jeremy’s silver one.

Two symbols of a marriage that legally never existed.

Emotionally, something had.

Emily said, “I don't want to pretend this was okay.”

“Good,” I said.

“But I also don't want to pretend it meant nothing.”

Jeremy nodded.

“What will you do with them?”

“I don't know yet.”

She took both.

Then looked at me.

“Is that weird?”

“No.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

Those rings were not mine.

They never had been.

Even my anger did not make them mine.

Emily put them in her bag.

Then she looked at Jeremy.

“Did Mom know you kept yours?”

“No.”

“Why did you?”

He thought.

“Because throwing it away felt like lying in the other direction.”

I understood.

Pretending something never mattered is another kind of dishonesty.

Emily nodded.

“Okay.”

She stood.

“I’m going home.”

Jeremy looked surprised.

“That’s it?”

“Yes.”

“You came over to emotionally devastate us and leave?”

“Family tradition.”

I laughed.

Jeremy groaned.

At the door, Emily hugged me first.

Then Jeremy.

“Night, Dad.”

“Night.”

No hesitation anymore.

After she left, Jeremy and I sat quietly.

He reached for my hand.

I let him.

“Are you angry?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“At what?”

“That you wanted the ceremony.”

“Yes.”

“That you kept the ring.”

“Yes.”

“That there are still
