was perhaps the most difficult truth any adult in this family had managed.

“Your future belongs to you.”

Then she looked toward me again.

“Jill.”

“Yes,” I whispered.

“If Jeremy becomes unbearable, leave him.”

Emily laughed through tears.

I did too.

“I mean it.”

Lacey smiled.

“He is capable of turning guilt into a full-time occupation.”

Accurate.

“Do not stay because I died.”

I swallowed.

“Do not leave because I existed.”

My eyes filled.

“Choose him or don't choose him based on who he is after the truth.”

I closed my eyes.

That was exactly what I had been trying to do.

Lacey looked at the camera for several seconds.

Then:

“And if you stay, make him take you somewhere better than Vanderbilt on Tuesdays.”

I laughed.

Emily leaned into me.

The video ended with Lacey reaching toward the camera.

Then stopping.

“One more thing.”

Of course.

She looked directly into the lens.

“I was here.”

Her voice trembled.

“So were you.”

Then she turned off the camera.

The screen went black.

Emily and I sat on the floor of the empty apartment.

Neither spoke.

Finally Emily said, “I needed that.”

“So did I.”

She opened her envelope.

Inside was a short handwritten letter.

Not another confession.

Only:

Emily,

The mug is yours.

Don't let Jill take it.

Love,
Mom

Emily laughed and cried simultaneously.

“She's ridiculous.”

I opened mine.

One page.

Jill,

If you're reading this, you know enough.

Please stop looking for the version of the past where nobody gets hurt.

It doesn't exist.

There was one final line.

You were his wife before I was sick, while I was sick, and after I was gone. The courthouse was never what made that true.

I folded the letter.

Emily looked at me.

“What does it say?”

I handed it to her.

She read.

Then looked toward the empty apartment.

“She's right.”

“Yes.”

“Are you going to tell Dad about the video?”

“Yes.”

“All of it?”

I thought about the woman I had become since that first courthouse visit.

“Yes.”

No more selective truth.

No more protection through omission.

“All of it.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 38: Jeremy Watched Lacey’s Last Confession Without Defending Himself, Then Returned Her Ring to the One Person Who Could Give It a Future

Emily called me three days after the courthouse visit.
