twenty-three in February.

The date carried more weight now.

February 9.

Her birth.

The day Lacey became a mother and was told she had lost her child.

The day Rebecca became a mother through a plan built on deception.

The day Jeremy became a father without knowing it.

The day Thomas's future changed before he understood how.

Emily considered skipping her birthday entirely.

“No.”

Thomas said it first.

Jeremy agreed too quickly.

Emily men.

“See how that works?”

Thomas laughed.

Jeremy pretended to write it down.

Emily decided on dinner.

Nothing else.

No party.

No surprise guests.

No speeches.

She invited Thomas, Jeremy, me, Caleb, and two friends from work who knew only the simplified version.

“Family situation,” Emily had told them.

A phrase doing heroic labor.

Dinner was at our house.

Jeremy insisted on cooking.

I considered that dangerous.

Emily said, “Let him.”

So he made chili.

His one reliable dish.

Thomas brought cornbread.

Caleb brought lemon pie because Thomas had once mentioned Rebecca loved it.

That choice could have been awkward.

Instead, Emily looked at the pie and smiled.

“Mom's favorite.”

Caleb nodded.

“I know.”

Thomas looked at him.

Another relationship carrying complicated history.

They had not become close.

But they no longer treated each other like evidence.

Before dinner, Emily placed three photographs on the mantel.

Rebecca.

Lacey.

Lee.

I noticed immediately.

“So we're doing sure?”

“Yes.”

Caleb looked toward the mantel.

“Margaret?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Emily thought.

Then shook her head.

“Not tonight.”

That was her choice.

No one argued.

Her boundary did not need a trial.

Dinner was surprisingly normal.

Emily's work friends teased her about being unable to keep plants alive.

Thomas told a story about thirteen-year-old Emily hiding a failing math grade.

Jeremy looked delighted by every embarrassing detail.

Emily noticed.

“Do not collect ammunition.”

“Never.”

“You're everyone was related.

Silence.

Emily looked around the table.

Then said, “Advanced placement family.”

Nobody improved on that.

Later, after the toward a stack of gifts.

“Too many things.”

Then she handed Thomas an envelope.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph from the amended-record hearing.

Emily and Thomas outside the courthouse.

On the back, she had written:

My dad before, during, and after every truth.

Thomas covered his mouth.

Emily immediately pointed.

“No crying before Jeremy.”

“Too late,” Jeremy said.

Thomas laughed through tears.

Then Emily handed Jeremy a smaller envelope.

He went completely still.

“Why?”

“Open it.”

Inside was another photograph.

The kindergarten image Lee had once kept.

But this was a copy.

The original remained at Lee's grave until weather eventually took it.

This copy had been cleaned and enlarged.

Five-year-old Emily.

Missing tooth.

Crooked ponytail.

Jeremy stared.

On the back, Emily had written:

Your dad found me first.

Jeremy’s eyes filled.

She continued before he could speak.

“I know you missed this version.”

His face broke.

“I did.”

“I can't give her back to you.”

“No.”

“But you can know her.”

He nodded.

Emily handed him a second photograph.

Recent.

The two of them outside the cardiology clinic.

Both making annoyed faces because I had insisted on taking it.

On the back:

You get this version.

Jeremy stopped.

Everything in his expression softened.

Not replacement.

Present.

That was the whole lesson.

He stood.

“Can I hug you?”

Emily rolled her eyes.

“You're still asking?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

She hugged him.

Long.

Unhurried.

When they separated, Thomas was smiling.

Then Emily looked at him.

“Don't make it weird.”

“I wasn't.”

“You had a face.”

“I did not.”

Jeremy pointed.

“He did.”

Thomas shook his head.

Traitor.

The evening continued.

At ten, Caleb left.

At ten thirty, Emily went upstairs to take a call from a friend.

Thomas stayed behind to help with dishes.

Jeremy dried.

I watched two men who had once feared each other arguing about where bowls belonged.

“Top shelf,” Jeremy said.

“That makes no sense.”

“It's my kitchen.”

“Then why can't you find anything?”

I left them to it.

When Emily came downstairs, Thomas was putting on his coat.

“You leaving?”

“Long drive.”

She hugged him.

“Thanks, Dad.”

Then she hesitated.

Jeremy was near the sink.

I saw it happen before he did.

Emily looked at him.

“Night.”

Jeremy smiled.

“Night, kid.”

She took two steps toward the stairs.

Stopped.

Turned.

“Dad?”

Both men answered.

“Yeah?”

The room froze.

Emily did too.

Thomas looked at Jeremy.

Jeremy looked at Thomas.

Emily covered her face.

“Oh God.”

I bit my lip.

Thomas started laughing.

Not politely.

Deep, helpless laughter.

Emily pointed at him.

“This is not funny.”

“It is a little.”

Jeremy had not moved.

His face was white.

Emily noticed.

“Oh no.”

Jeremy swallowed.

“You meant Thomas.”

“Yes.”

His expression flickered.

Then Emily sighed.

“No.”

Now Thomas stopped laughing.

She looked at Jeremy.

“I mean, I was talking to Thomas.”

Jeremy nodded quickly.

“Right.”

“But…”

She hated the attention.

I could see it.

“I don't know.”

Nobody helped.

Good.

Let her find it.

Emily rubbed both hands over her face.

“Sometimes I think of you that way.”

Jeremy stopped breathing.

Thomas's expression softened.

Emily continued.

“Not instead of him.”

“I know.”

“Not the same.”

“I know.”

“But…”

She looked at Jeremy.

“You are my father.”

His eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“And Dad feels…”

She shook her head.

“Maybe sometimes.”

Jeremy did something I loved him for.

He did not step forward.

Did not claim the word.

Did not say he had waited his whole life.

He just said, “Okay.”

Emily stared.

“Okay?”

“Yes.”

“You're crying.”

“I can cry and still say okay.”

Thomas looked toward him.

Something passed between them.

Then Thomas said, “You know, there can be two.”

Emily groaned.

“Do not organize my emotional serious.

“Yes.”

Jeremy swallowed.

“Why?”

Thomas thought.

“Because I finally understood I'm not losing anything.”

Emily went still.

Thomas continued.

“She calls me Dad because I raised her.”

“Yes.”

“If she calls you Dad someday,
