say?”

“That Lee regretted something.”

Jeremy stood perfectly still.

“What?”

“He helped with paperwork.”

The paternal from Dad's business account.”

Mark thought.

“Oh.”

Jeremy looked up sharply.

“You know.”

“My dad mentioned wall.

“These were Uncle Lee's shop ledgers.”

Jeremy frowned.

“You kept them?”

“Tax history.”

Mark pulled out an old binder.

Pages of handwritten expenses.

Parts.

Fuel.

Tools.

Payroll.

Then February 2005.

Two thousand say?”

“That he was paying to fix a mistake.”

Everything changed.

Not fund the adoption.

Fix it.

Jeremy stared.

“What eyes.

His father had known.

But maybe not early.

Mark continued.

“Lee found the lab report.”

“How?”

“I don't know.”

“He knew Mom hid it?”

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

“He got angry.”

That was easy to imagine.

Lee Tolley had been quiet.

But according to Jeremy, when he did become angry, everybody knew.

Mark said, “Dad told me they had the biggest fight of their marriage.”

Jeremy whispered, “I never saw them fight.”

“Apparently they did when you weren't there.”

“What happened?”

“Lee wanted to tell you.”

Jeremy's face crumpled.

“He wanted to tell me.”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

One parent had tried.

“What stopped him?”

Mark hesitated.

“Evelyn.”

“How?”

“She told him the adoption was already final.”

“It wasn't.”

“No.”

“She told him Lacey had consented.”

“She hadn't.”

“No.”

“She showed him my waiver.”

Mark nodded.

Jeremy laughed without humor.

“The one Dad signed.”

“He thought he was witnessing your prior consent.”

The layers became clear.

Lee had not intentionally forged Jeremy.

He believed he was completing paperwork Jeremy had already approved.

Evelyn had built deception around him too.

Jeremy whispered, “Why didn't he ask me?”

Mark answered quietly.

“Because he trusted her.”

There it was again.

Trust.

Weaponized.

Not because trust itself was foolish.

Because the person receiving it chose to misuse it.

Mark continued.

“Then Lee learned the paternity result.”

“And?”

“He confronted Evelyn.”

“Then he paid the attorney.”

“Yes.”

“To reverse it?”

“That's what Dad believed.”

Nathan needed to know.

I called him.

Within an hour, he joined by video while Mark searched the ledgers.

The payment had gone to the same Kentucky attorney used for the adoption.

Nathan said, “I can subpoena archived billing records if they still exist.”

Jeremy laughed bitterly.

“Another archive.”

Nobody laughed.

Mark found an old envelope taped inside the ledger's back cover.

Lee's handwriting.

Jeremy recognized it instantly.

For Jeremy.

Jeremy stared.

The envelope had never been delivered.

“Why is that here?”

Mark shook his head.

“No idea.”

Jeremy opened it.

Inside were two sheets.

One typed.

One handwritten.

The typed page was a copy of a letter sent to the adoption attorney.

Jeremy read.

I withdraw any consent attributed to my son, Jeremy Lee Tolley, regarding the child born to Lacey Burcham.

His breathing changed.

The letter continued.

I signed a witness acknowledgment based on information from my wife that I now believe was false.

Nathan leaned closer on the video screen.

“That is significant.”

Jeremy kept reading.

I have learned Jeremy may be the biological father and has not personally consented.

Stop all proceedings until he is notified.

Date.

Three days after Emily’s birth.

Thomas and Rebecca already had her.

But the adoption was not yet finalized.

Lee tried to stop it.

“What happened?” I asked.

Mark looked at the handwritten page.

“Read the other one.”

Jeremy unfolded it.

It was a letter to him.

Son,

There is something I should have asked you directly instead of trusting paperwork and other people's explanations.

Jeremy stopped.

His eyes filled.

He continued.

Lacey had the baby.

The child is alive.

You may be the father.

My heart broke even though I already knew the truth.

Lee had written the sentence Jeremy should have received twenty-two years earlier.

Everything might have changed.

The letter continued.

Your mother says you knew and agreed to adoption.

I no longer believe that.

Jeremy could barely read.

If I am wrong, forgive me for interfering.

If I am right, come home immediately.

He lowered the page.

Date.

Four days after Emily’s birth.

“Why didn't I get this?”

Nobody answered.

Then Mark noticed the bottom.

A notation in Evelyn's handwriting.

Do not mail.

Jeremy closed his eyes.

Again.

His mother had stopped it.

Mark whispered, “I'm sorry.”

Jeremy did not respond.

He looked toward the old hallway.

The house where he grew up.

The house where Evelyn intercepted my letter.

The house where she intercepted Lee's.

Two envelopes.

One before my wedding.

One after Emily's birth.

Two opportunities for truth.

Both removed.

Jeremy stood.

“I need air.”

He walked onto the porch.

I followed after a minute.

He leaned against the railing.

Cold night air moved through the trees.

“My dad tried.”

“Yes.”

“I thought he knew and stayed quiet.”

“He didn't.”

“He trusted Mom.”

“Yes.”

Jeremy wiped his face.

“I spent years thinking he was simple.”

“What do you mean?”

“He fixed cars. Watched baseball. Didn't talk much.”

I waited.

“He was the person in the family who almost did the right thing.”

“He did do something.”

“Not enough.”

“No.”

“But more than we knew.”

Jeremy looked toward the dark yard.

“I wish I'd gotten that letter.”

“I know.”

“What would've happened?”

Dangerous question.

“What do you think?”

“I would've gone to the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“I would've found Emily.”

“Probably.”

“I would've postponed our wedding.”

“We were already married by then.”

He stopped.

Right.

Four days after Emily's birth was months after our wedding.

The timeline still tangled him when emotion took over.

“Right.”

He laughed sadly.

“I would've told you.”

“Would you?”

He looked at me.

“I think so.”

Not certainty.

Better.

“I would've had to.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You always had the option to hide it.”

He absorbed that.

“Then yes.”

He nodded.

“I think I would've told you because Dad would've made me.”

That was painfully honest.

Maybe twenty-year-old Jeremy had not yet become the man capable of difficult disclosure on his own.

Lee might have forced the issue.

“Would you have tried to reverse the adoption?”

“Yes.”

Immediate.

“And if Thomas and Rebecca fought?”

“Yes.”

“You might've won.”

Jeremy looked away.

That was complicated.

If he had won, Thomas would not have raised Emily.

Rebecca would not have been her mother.

Emily's entire life would be different.

“Would that have been better?” he asked.

I knew better than to answer.

“No one can know.”

Jeremy nodded.

“Emily loves Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“She loved Rebecca.”

“Yes.”

“Then wanting the past changed means wanting her life changed.”

“Not exactly.”

I touched his arm.

“You can wish you had been given the choice without wishing away who she became.”

He looked at me.

“That sounds like one of your two-things truths.”

“It is.”

He smiled weakly.

Inside, Mark called us.

Nathan had found something.

We returned.

The attorney's archived billing index had responded to a records query.

There were entries after Lee's payment.

Nathan read them.

February 14.

Conference with Lee Tolley regarding paternal consent dispute.

February 15.

Telephone conference with Evelyn Tolley.

February 16.

Receipt of affidavit from Evelyn Tolley confirming son unavailable and consent previously obtained.

Jeremy stared.

“She overrode him.”

Nathan continued.

February 17.

Discussion regarding possible litigation.

February 18.

Refund issued to Lee Tolley.

Mark checked the ledger.

No refund listed.

“Where did it go?”

Nathan followed the record.

Cashier's check.

Never deposited.

Eventually escheated.

Lee had paid to stop the adoption.

The attorney refunded him because the effort failed.

But something else appeared.

February 21.

Client conference – Lee Tolley.

Preparation of notice to biological father.

Jeremy leaned forward.

“He tried again.”

“Yes.”

February 22.

Matter suspended.

Reason:

Client hospitalized.

Jeremy stopped.

“My dad.”

“What happened then?” I asked.

Jeremy knew immediately.

“He had a heart attack.”

We all went silent.

Lee survived.

But he spent weeks recovering.

Evelyn managed everything.

By the time Lee came home, the adoption had moved forward.

Jeremy stared at the dates.

“He almost died trying to stop it.”

We could not know that the stress caused his heart attack.

The genetic heart issue complicated everything.

Still, the timing was brutal.

Nathan continued.

“There’s one last
