home.

Emily let him.

That surprised me.

I thought she would keep it beside Lacey’s necklace and the two hospital bracelets.

Instead, she handed it to Thomas in the parking lot.

“You need it more tonight.”

He looked at her.

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Mom made it for Lacey, but half of it is your life too.”

Thomas held the binder carefully.

Emily kissed his cheek.

“Call me tomorrow.”

He nodded.

Then he drove away alone.

The next morning, Jeremy's phone rang before seven.

Thomas.

Jeremy stared at the screen.

“That's unusual.”

“Answer.”

He did.

I heard only his side.

“Hey.”

Pause.

“No, we're awake.”

We were not.

Jeremy listened.

His expression changed.

“Okay.”

Another pause.

“Yeah.”

Then he looked at me.

“Thomas wants me to come over.”

I sat up.

“Why?”

“He wants to talk.”

“To you?”

“Yes.”

“About Emily?”

“I assume.”

Thomas lived a little over an hour away.

Jeremy drove alone.

He offered to let me come.

I said no.

Some conversations belonged to people who did not need witnesses.

He returned around noon.

I was making soup.

He walked into the kitchen and stood there silently.

“What happened?”

Jeremy sat.

“Thomas gave me something.”

“What?”

He put a small box on the table.

Inside was a silver watch.

Old.

Scratched.

I recognized it from photographs.

Rebecca had given it to Thomas on their tenth anniversary.

“Why did he give you that?”

“He didn't.”

Jeremy opened the box farther.

Under the watch lay a folded note.

Emily's first hospital identification card.

Temporary.

Baby Girl Harper.

“He found it inside the scrapbook.”

I sat.

“What did Thomas want?”

Jeremy rubbed his hands together.

“To talk about being her father.”

That could mean almost anything.

“And?”

“He said he hates me sometimes.”

I blinked.

“At least he's honest.”

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

“Because I get to represent what he can't compete with.”

“You told him there isn't a competition.”

“I did.”

“He knows.”

Jeremy looked toward the window.

“But feelings don't always obey what you know.”

That was true enough to hurt.

Thomas had raised Emily.

Changed diapers.

Paid bills.

Stayed awake during fevers.

Fought over curfews.

Taught her to ride a bike.

Then biology arrived carrying Jeremy's face in hers.

Similar hands.

Inherited heart risk.

A blood tie Thomas could never have.

“What did he ask you?”

Jeremy smiled faintly.

“To stop trying to make him comfortable.”

I almost laughed.

“That sounds like Thomas.”

“He said every time I call him her real dad, it sounds like I'm asking permission to exist.”

That was perceptive.

“What did you say?”

“That I thought I was being respectful.”

“He said respect doesn't require me to erase myself.”

I leaned against the counter.

Thomas had spent weeks defending his place.

Now he was telling Jeremy to stop shrinking his.

“What else?”

“He asked what I want.”

“With Emily?”

“Yes.”

“And what did you say?”

Jeremy looked at me.

“I said I want whatever she'll give me.”

“That sounds safe.”

“He said that too.”

I smiled.

“Then what did he make you say?”

Jeremy sighed.

“That I want to know her.”

“Obviously.”

“That I want birthdays.”

My chest tightened.

“That I want phone calls for stupid things.”

“Brakes.”

“Exactly.”

He smiled.

“That I want to know who she marries if she marries.”

His expression softened.

“Meet grandchildren if she ever has them.”

I sat opposite him.

“And?”

“That I want to be her father.”

There.

The thing he had been too afraid to say.

Not Dad.

Father.

A role without stealing Thomas's word.

“What did Thomas say?”

Jeremy's eyes filled.

“He said good.”

I stared.

“Good?”

“He said Emily can decide what that means.”

“That sounds right.”

“Then he asked me something.”

“What?”

Jeremy looked down.

“If something happens to him.”

I stopped.

“What does that mean?”

“He's healthy.”

“Yes.”

“But he said parents think about this stuff.”

Of course they do.

“He asked whether I'd be there.”

“For Emily?”

“Yes.”

“She's twenty-two.”

“I said that.”

Jeremy almost laughed.

“Thomas said being twenty-two doesn't make you stop needing people.”

Also true.

“What did you say?”

“Yes.

Immediately?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Jeremy stared at the temporary hospital card.

“He said he knows I'm not trying to replace him.”

I waited.

“But he also said he's been trying to make me smaller because he was scared.”

“Scared of losing her?”

“Yes.”

“That seems human.”

“He apologized.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“For resenting him for having my years.”

My chest tightened.

That was progress too.

Thomas did not steal those years.

Neither did Jeremy surrender them.

The people who made those choices were elsewhere.

Dead.

Gone.

Or beyond repair.

Jeremy looked at the card again.

“Then Thomas gave me this.”

“Why?”

“He said Rebecca kept it in the scrapbook.”

On the back, Rebecca had written something.

Jeremy handed it to me.

I read.

Thomas held her first.

The sentence was simple.

Then beneath it:

She stopped crying when she heard his voice.

I looked at Jeremy.

His face was wet.

“Why did he give it to you?”

“He said because I need to know something.”

“What?”

“That the first man Emily trusted was him.”

I frowned.

“That sounds like a warning.”

“It wasn't.”

Jeremy looked toward the card.

“He said the second doesn't have to be competition.”

My throat tightened.

Thomas had given Jeremy evidence of his own fatherhood.

Not as territory.

As permission.

I slid the card back.

“That was generous.”

“Yeah.”

“Don't waste it.”

“I won't.”

The words came quickly.

Then he corrected himself.

“I'll try not to.”

Better.

That afternoon, Emily stopped by.

She had begun doing that.

Not often.

Enough.

She entered without knocking, which irritated me and secretly made Jeremy ridiculously happy.

“I need food.”

“You're twenty-two,” I said.

“I can still need food.”

“Your father said that.”

She looked at Jeremy.

“Which one?”

The room stopped.

Then Emily realized what she had said.

Jeremy did too.

No one moved.

She groaned.

“Oh no.”

Jeremy's eyes filled.

“Don't.”

“What?”

“Don't make it weird.”

Emily pointed.

“I swear if you cry—”

He started laughing.

Which was worse because tears came anyway.

Emily covered her face.

“I hate this family.”

I handed her a bowl.

“Sit down.”

She did.

Jeremy tried to recover.

Emily glared.

“You're still Jeremy.”

“Yes, ma'am.”

“Good.”

But something had changed.

Not the title.

The possibility.

During lunch, Emily told us the court supplement had been processed.

Her birth record now contained Jeremy's verified biological paternity and Lacey’s documented maternity.

The adoption record remained intact.

Thomas and Rebecca remained her legal parents.

No one had been erased.

Emily had gone to the records office that morning to collect certified copies.

“The same courthouse?” I asked.

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

That courthouse.

Where I had gone looking for proof of my own marriage.

Where all of this began.

Emily noticed.

“Want to see?”

She pulled the documents from her bag.

Jeremy touched the amended page as if it were fragile.

His name appeared under biological father.

Jeremy Lee Tolley.

No unknown.

No blank.

No omission.

Lacey Anne Burcham.

Biological mother.

Thomas and Rebecca Harper.

Adoptive parents.

All true.

All on paper.

Jeremy whispered, “She should've seen this.”

“Lacey?”

“Yes.”

Emily nodded.

“I brought a copy to her grave.”

That silenced him.

She had placed it beneath a small stone near the flowers.

Not because Lacey could read it.

Because Emily needed to complete the act.

I understood.

Then Emily handed me another paper.

“What is this?”

“Court notice.”

I read.

Jeremy's second marriage.

Lacey.

Because Lacey had acknowledged the marriage was invalid due to Jeremy's existing marriage to me, the legal correction had been approved.

No divorce.

No widowhood claim.

The record would show the marriage as void from inception.

Jeremy looked at me.

There was relief in his face.

I did not feel the relief I expected.

“What?” he asked.

“Nothing.”

“It isn't nothing.”

I sat.

For weeks I had wanted the legal mess corrected.

Now it was.

Yet seeing Lacey's marriage erased from legal existence felt strange.

“That ring mattered to her.”

Jeremy understood.

“Yes.”

“The marriage was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“But it mattered.”

“Yes.”

Two truths.

Again.

Emily looked at the notice.

“Mom knew it wasn't real.”

“Legally,” I said.

She nodded.

“But emotionally?”

Jeremy answered.

“It meant something.”

I looked at him.

He met my eyes.

No evasion.

No minimizing.

“That doesn't threaten what you and I have.”

I believed him.

That was new too.

Emily folded the notice.

“I kept her ring.”

Jeremy looked at her.

“Good.”

“She wanted me to have it.”

“When did she tell you?”

“The night before she died.”

Emily touched the necklace.

“I might wear it someday.”

Jeremy's expression changed.

“As what?”

She shrugged.

“A ring.”

Good answer.

Objects did not have to preserve the exact meaning adults assigned them.

Emily could choose.

She finished the soup.

Then she pulled another paper from her bag.

“I found this in Mom's things.”

Rebecca again.

Thomas had missed it.

A handwritten list.

Not secrets.

Names.

Jeremy.

Lacey.

Jill.

Caleb.

Dr. Pike.

Mary Collins.

Nathan looked at a photograph Emily had sent and recognized it as likely a confession checklist.

Each name had a note.

Jeremy – tell him the truth.

Lacey – apologize without asking forgiveness.

Thomas – tell everything.

Emily – let her choose.

Jill – no right to contact unless Jeremy tells her first.

I stared at that one.

Even Rebecca had known my life was not hers to invade directly.

At the bottom, one name appeared that none of us recognized.

Helen Ward.

Next to it:

She kept the original.

Jeremy frowned.

“Original what?”

Emily looked at me.

“No idea.”

Another thread.

I almost groaned.

“Can our family discover one thing without producing three more?”

“No,” Emily said.

“Apparently not.”

Jeremy took the list.

“Helen Ward.”

The name meant nothing to him.

Thomas had never heard it either.

Nathan ran a quick public-record search.

Helen Ward.

Former county records clerk.

Retired.

Age seventy-seven.

Still living locally.

A records clerk.

My stomach tightened.

“The adoption file?”

Emily guessed.

“Maybe.”

Jeremy looked toward me.

“You want to go?”

I laughed.

“Why are you asking me?”

“Because I learned.”

Fair.

Emily stood.

“I’m going.”

Of course she was.

We met Helen Ward the next morning at a retirement community twenty minutes outside town.

She was small.

White-haired.

Sharp-eyed.

She looked at Emily and immediately knew.

“You're the Harper girl.”

Emily stopped.

“Yes.”

Helen sighed.

“I wondered.”

She invited us into a sitting room.

No one wasted time.

Emily showed Rebecca's list.

Helen read her own name.

“She remembered.”

“What original did you keep?” Emily asked.

Helen looked toward Jeremy.

“You're Evelyn's son.”

“Yes.”

“I knew your mother.”

“That has rarely been good news lately.”

Helen smiled faintly.

“She was complicated.”

“That word is doing heavy work.”

Helen nodded.

Then she looked toward Emily.

“I kept a copy of the original relinquishment form.”

Nathan, who had come with us this time, leaned forward.

“The unaltered one?”

“Yes.”

Emily stared.

“What was altered?”

Helen's expression hardened.

“Your mother's consent.”

Lacey.

Helen explained.

The document eventually filed with the court contained a paragraph stating that Lacey understood the child was living and voluntarily consented to permanent adoption.

The first version did not.

Emily went pale.

“What did it say?”

Helen answered.

“That Lacey consented to disposition of remains.”

Nobody moved.

The paper Lacey thought concerned a dead baby had originally said exactly that.

Later, someone replaced the page.

A new consent paragraph transformed burial authorization into adoption consent.

Nathan went still.

“Do you know who changed it?”

Helen looked at him.

“I know who brought the replacement.”

“Who?”

“Rebecca Harper.”

Thomas was not present.

Thank God.

Emily closed her eyes.

Her mother had not merely known about the false consent.

She had participated directly in converting it.

Nathan asked, “Did you report this?”

Helen looked ashamed.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because my supervisor told me the families had resolved it.”

“Who was your supervisor?”

Helen answered.

“Margaret's cousin.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Helen continued.

“I kept the original because I knew something was wrong.”

Jeremy's anger rose.

“But you still filed the replacement.”

“Yes.”

“Why does everybody keep evidence instead of stopping things?”

Helen flinched.

The question hit.

She had no answer good enough.

Finally she said, “Because keeping a copy felt safer than being brave.”

Jeremy looked away.

Evelyn.

Pike.

Rebecca.

Helen.

So many people had known pieces.

Everyone preserved proof for a future courage they never found.

Emily asked quietly, “Do you still have it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because after twenty-two years, I was afraid destroying it would be one more wrong.”

She stood.

“I'll get it.”

When she returned, she carried a sealed archival folder.

Inside was the first version.

Lacey's real signature.

Her real understanding.

Not adoption.

Remains.

Nathan read every line.

Then he looked at Emily.

“This changes the legal characterization completely.”

“What does that mean?”

“It confirms your mother never consented to adoption at all.”

Emily stared.

“We already knew.”

“We knew from testimony.”

Nathan touched the page.

“This is documentary proof.”

Jeremy sat back.

The court supplement had corrected history.

Now we had the document showing how the history was falsified.

Emily took a photograph.

Then asked Helen, “Why did Rebecca put your name on her list?”

Helen's eyes filled.

“Because she came to see me.”

“When?”

“About a year before she died.”

“What did she want?”

“The original.”

Emily stiffened.

“To destroy it?”

“No.”

Helen shook her head.

“To copy it.”

“Why?”

“She said she was going to confess.”

Rebecca had been gathering proof against herself.

That surprised me more than anything.

Helen continued.

“She said if she told Emily without evidence, people might think grief or illness had confused her.”

“So you gave her a copy.”

“Yes.”

“What did she do with it?”

“I don't know.”

Another missing paper.

Another attempt that died unfinished.

But the original remained.

Emily held it.

For the first time, there was no ambiguity left.

Lacey had not surrendered her.

Not legally.

Not emotionally.

Not even unknowingly.

Her signature had been repurposed.

Her grief weaponized.

The adoption had been built on altered consent.

Emily looked at Nathan.

“Does this threaten my adoption now?”

Thomas's place.

Rebecca's legal motherhood.

All of it.

Nathan answered carefully.

“No one is seeking to unwind an adult adoption against your wishes.”

Emily nodded.

“Good.”

“Would you want to?”

“No.”

Immediate.

“Never.”

Jeremy smiled faintly.

Emily looked at the old consent form.

“But I want this attached too.”

“It can be.”

“Then do it.”

Helen whispered, “I'm sorry.”

Emily looked at her.

“You should've stopped it.”

“Yes.”

“You didn't.”

“No.”

“But you kept this.”

“Yes.”

Emily nodded.

“That doesn't make you brave.”

Helen's eyes filled.

“No.”

“But it means I have it now.”

“Yes.”

Emily closed the folder.

That was all she offered.

Not forgiveness.

Not absolution.

Just recognition.

On the drive home, Jeremy said, “She handles these people better than I do.”

I looked at him.

“She has less interest in punishing them.”

“Why?”

“Because she has a life to get back to.”

He thought about that.

Then smiled faintly.

“Maybe I should try that.”

“Yes.”

We drove in silence for several miles.

Then his phone rang.

Thomas.

Jeremy answered.

Thomas's voice was loud enough that I heard the first words.

“I need you here.”

Jeremy straightened.

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then:

“Emily fainted.”

Everything else disappeared.

Click here to continue reading: PART 31: Emily’s Collapse Turned
