father.”

“Eventually, yes.”

“And you kept her.”

“Yes.”

The recording captured movement.

A chair scraping.

Footsteps.

Then Lacey's voice came farther from the microphone.

“Get out.”

Rebecca said, “Please.”

“I said get out?”

“No.”

“Sorry you're dying?”

Rebecca coughed softly.

At the time, Thomas told us, her illness had already begun.

Not asked her at eighteen.”

Lacey laughed harshly.

“You asked whether she wanted to know her birth family.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I found her.”

Emily went rigid.

Thomas turned.

On the recording, Rebecca stopped breathing for a moment.

“You found Emily?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

That was earlier than Lacey had admitted in her letter.

Not four her?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Lacey's answer came immediately.

“Because I saw what she had.”

“What?”

“You.”

Thomas covered his mouth.

The recording continued.

“Pictures. Birthdays. Christmases. Graduation. A father who looked at her like she hung the moon.”

Thomas started crying.

Emily put her arm around him.

Lacey continued.

“I spent twenty years imagining somebody had thrown my baby away.”

Rebecca's breathing shook.

“I didn't.”

“No.”

Lacey's voice softened for the first time.

“You didn't.”

The sentence did not forgive the theft.

It acknowledged the care.

That distinction mattered.

Lacey said, “I saw her life and thought if I walked into it, I'd destroy something.”

Rebecca answered, “You wouldn't.”

“You don't know that.”

“I do.”

“Of course you think that. You got to raise her.”

Rebecca went quiet.

Then she said, “She should know you.”

Lacey laughed bitterly.

“Now?”

“Yes.”

“Why now?”

“Because I'm sick.”

Lacey paused.

“So am I.”

Nobody in our room moved.

Two women.

Both ill.

Both finally out of time.

Rebecca asked, “How bad?”

“Bad enough.”

A long silence followed.

Then Rebecca said, “God.”

“Don't.”

“What?”

“Don't make this about tragedy.”

“I'm not.”

“You came here because you think dying makes truth easier.”

Rebecca answered softly.

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because dying made me understand that if I don't tell her, I'll leave you holding the same secret I carried.”

Lacey was silent.

Rebecca continued.

“I don't want you to become me.”

Emily closed her eyes.

That sentence cut through the room.

Rebecca had spent years hiding the truth.

Then, faced with death, she saw Lacey beginning the same cycle.

Find Emily.

Stay silent.

Call it protection.

Rebecca had recognized herself.

Lacey said, “I'm nothing like you.”

“No.”

Rebecca's voice was calm.

“But you're afraid for the same reason.”

“What reason?”

“That if you tell her, she may stop loving the family she already has.”

Lacey snapped, “She doesn't love me.”

“Not yet.”

“Don't say that.”

“She could.”

“Don't.”

Rebecca's voice broke.

“She has enough room.”

Thomas cried harder.

Emily stared at the laptop.

Rebecca continued.

“I learned that too late.”

Lacey said nothing.

Then Rebecca shifted.

Paper rustled.

“I brought something.”

“What?”

“Emily's childhood.”

Thomas frowned.

“What does that mean?” he whispered.

The recording answered.

Rebecca had brought copies.

School photographs.

Medical records.

Report cards.

Birthday notes.

A list of favorite foods.

Books.

Teachers.

Injuries.

Everything she thought Lacey had missed.

Lacey made a sound.

“You brought me a scrapbook?”

“Yes.”

“Are you insane?”

“Probably.”

“Do you think photographs fix this?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because if you decide not to contact her, you should at least know who she became.”

Emily pressed both hands over her mouth.

Thomas whispered, “Rebecca.”

Lacey's anger cracked.

Not gone.

Changed.

She said, “What color were her eyes when she was born?”

Rebecca answered immediately.

“Dark blue.”

“Hair?”

“Almost black.”

“Did she cry?”

“A lot.”

A small laugh entered Rebecca's voice.

“She hated being swaddled.”

Lacey breathed out unevenly.

“Did she get sick?”

“Nothing serious.”

“First word?”

“Dog.”

Thomas wiped his face.

“Of course.”

Emily leaned against him.

On the recording, Lacey asked question after question.

Not accusations now.

A mother's inventory.

When did she walk?

What did she eat?

Was she afraid of storms?

Did she like school?

Did she have friends?

Did she ever ask about me?

That last question changed Rebecca's voice.

“Yes.”

Emily stared.

“When?” Lacey asked.

“Several times.”

“What did you tell her?”

“That we didn't know much.”

Lacey snapped, “Lie.”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

“That you were young.”

“True.”

“That you wanted her to have opportunities.”

“Lie.”

Rebecca whispered, “Yes.”

Lacey's voice hardened.

“Did you ever tell her I loved her?”

Rebecca did not answer.

That silence lasted longer than any other.

Emily lowered her eyes.

Finally Rebecca said, “No.”

Lacey whispered, “Why?”

Rebecca cried.

Not loudly.

The microphone caught the uneven breathing.

“Because I was afraid if I gave you any goodness, she'd want you.”

Thomas turned his face away.

Emily went still.

There it was.

The ugliest truth Rebecca had admitted.

Not law.

Not safety.

Not protection.

Jealousy.

Lacey's voice became very quiet.

“You wanted me dead.”

“No.”

“You needed me gone.”

“Yes.”

Rebecca sobbed once.

“I needed you to stay gone.”

Lacey let silence punish her.

Then she said, “Thank you.”

Rebecca stopped crying.

“For what?”

“For saying it honestly.”

The next portion of the recording sounded calmer.

Not friendly.

Never that.

But no longer performative.

Rebecca explained the eighteenth-birthday promise.

She admitted she had asked Emily vaguely on purpose.

She admitted being relieved when Emily declined.

Then she told Lacey about the letter she had mailed.

The one that came back.

“You tried once,” Lacey said.

“Yes.”

“That doesn't erase eighteen years.”

“No.”

“But you tried.”

“Yes.”

Lacey sighed.

“Why are you recording this?”

Everyone in Nathan's office leaned closer.

Rebecca answered.

“So Thomas can know.”

Thomas froze.

Lacey asked, “He doesn't?”

“No.”

“Still?”

“No.”

“You're sitting in my apartment asking me to tell Emily the truth while lying to your own husband.”

“Yes.”

“That's almost impressive.”

Rebecca laughed faintly.

“I deserve that.”

“So why record?”

“Because I keep failing to say it.”

“You think a recorder makes you brave?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“A deadline.”

Lacey said nothing.

Rebecca continued.

“If I leave here without telling Thomas tonight, I want you to have this.”

Emily looked toward Susan.

Susan's eyes filled.

Somehow the recording had ended up back with Rebecca later.

The plan had changed.

Again.

Lacey asked, “Why me?”

“Because you won't protect me.”

“That is true.”

“And because if I lose my nerve, someone needs to tell him.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

Rebecca had tried to create accountability.

Then failed even at delivering it.

Lacey said, “Fine.”

Rebecca whispered, “Thank you.”

“Don't.”

“What?”

“Don't turn me into your absolution.”

“I won't.”

“You already are.”

Silence.

Then Lacey asked the question none of us expected.

“What do you want from me?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“I want you to meet Emily.”

Lacey answered instantly.

“No.”

Emily flinched.

Rebecca said, “Why?”

“Because she'll hate me.”

“No.”

“You don't know.”

“She might be angry.”

“She should be.”

“But not because of anything you did after she was born.”

Lacey laughed bitterly.

“I did plenty before.”

Rebecca said, “Then tell her.”

“You make truth sound easy after spending twenty years avoiding it.”

“No.”

Rebecca’s voice steadied.

“I think truth is terrible.”

Everybody in the conference room became still.

“I just think lies are worse.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Maybe because it was the closest anyone in this story had come to summarizing the entire mess without pretending it could be made clean.

Lacey asked, “What if she chooses you?”

Rebecca replied, “She already did.”

Emily stared at the screen.

Lacey said nothing.

Rebecca continued.

“She chose me every day because I was there.”

A pause.

“That doesn't mean she can't choose you too.”

Lacey whispered, “You really believe that?”

“I’m trying to.”

Then paper rustled again.

Rebecca said, “There’s something else.”

Lacey groaned.

“Of course.”

“I brought money.”

Emily looked toward Thomas.

Rebecca had apparently brought part of the hidden trust.

Lacey said, “Absolutely not.”

“It was always yours.”

“No.”

“Margaret kept it.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Evelyn told me.”

That surprised us.

Evelyn and Lacey had communicated before?

Jeremy leaned forward.

Rebecca asked the same thing.

“When?”

“After my mother died.”

“What did Evelyn say?”

“That she'd forced Margaret to transfer the rest into an account under my name.”

Lacey had known.

Not about the exact amount perhaps.

But about the existence of the account.

Emily looked hurt.

“She knew?”

Nathan said, “Keep listening.”

Lacey told Rebecca she had never accessed it.

“Why?” Rebecca asked.

“Because touching it felt like agreeing there was a price.”

Emily's expression softened.

That explained why the money remained.

Not ignorance.

Refusal.

Rebecca said, “It wasn't a price.”

“It came from Emily's trust.”

“It was intended for care.”

“Then it belongs to her.”

Rebecca said, “Use it to find her.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't want the first thing I take from my daughter to be money.”

Emily started crying again.

We finally understood Lacey's reaction in the hospital when the account was revealed.

She had not truly discovered it then.

She had chosen not to explain.

One more secret.

Smaller than the others.

But still hers.

The recording moved toward its end.

Rebecca said, “If you won't take the money, take the scrapbook.”

Lacey answered, “I will.”

Emily whispered, “Where is it?”

Thomas looked toward her.

We had emptied Lacey's apartment.

No scrapbook.

Rebecca continued.

“And contact her.”

“No promises.”

“Lacey.”

“No.”

Rebecca sighed.

“Fine.”

Then Lacey said something so quiet Nathan had to increase the volume.

“I need something from you too.”

“What?”

“If I contact Emily, you don't get to confess first.”

Emily frowned.

Thomas did too.

Rebecca asked, “Why?”

“Because she'll protect you.”

“What?”

“She loves you.”

“Yes.”

“If you tell her what you did before I ever speak to her, she'll spend all her energy protecting you from the consequences.”

Rebecca said nothing.

Lacey continued.

“I want one conversation where my daughter gets to hear me without first feeling responsible for your guilt.”

Emily's face changed.

That was painfully accurate.

She would have protected Rebecca.

Even now, after everything.

Rebecca finally said, “Okay.”

“And you don't tell Thomas until I tell you I'm ready.”

Thomas stared at the laptop.

There it was.

Lacey had asked Rebecca to keep lying to him.

Not indefinitely.

But still.

Another person deciding when someone else deserved the truth.

Rebecca said, “That's not fair to him.”

Lacey laughed sharply.

“No.”

A pause.

“But neither was twenty-one years.”

Rebecca agreed.

“Okay.”

Thomas stood.

Emily looked at him.

“Dad.”

He stepped away.

Not angry at her.

At Lacey.

At Rebecca.

At the entire cycle.

On the recording, chairs moved.

Rebecca asked, “Can I ask one thing before I go?”

“What?”

“Do you hate me?”

Lacey answered without hesitation.

“Yes.”

Rebecca breathed in.

Then Lacey added, “But not every part of you.”

Rebecca started crying.

“Why?”

“Because Emily looks happy.”

The recording ended there.

Nobody spoke.

Susan wiped her face.

Thomas stood at the window.

Emily remained seated.

Jeremy asked quietly, “Did Lacey ever contact Rebecca again?”

Susan shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Thomas turned.

“I do.”

Everyone looked at him.

He rubbed his forehead.

“Rebecca went to Kentucky twice.”

“How do you know?” Emily asked.

“Credit card statements.”

His face twisted.

“I thought she was visiting an old friend.”

Maybe she had.

In the strangest possible way.

Emily asked, “Did Mom go again?”

Thomas shook his head.

“Not after that year.”

I looked toward Nathan.

“The scrapbook.”

He nodded.

“We need to find it.”

Emily stood.

“I want it.”

Thomas looked at her.

“So do I.”

It contained a version of Emily's childhood assembled by the mother who raised her for the mother who lost her.

No legal record could matter more emotionally.

We returned to Lacey's apartment that afternoon.

The obvious places had been emptied.

Closets.

Desk.

Hospital bags.

Kitchen cabinets.

Emily searched under the bed.

Nothing.

Jeremy checked the storage closet.

Thomas opened boxes we had already labeled.

Then Caleb arrived.

“What are you looking for?”

Emily explained.

He frowned.

“Scrapbook?”

“Yes.”

Caleb walked toward the kitchen without another word.

He opened the cabinet above the refrigerator.

Reached behind a slow cooker.

And pulled out a large blue binder.

Everyone stared.

“How did you know?” Emily asked.

Caleb shrugged.

“Lacey hid important things where nobody short could reach.”

Despite everything, Emily laughed.

Caleb handed her the binder.

On the cover, in Rebecca’s handwriting, were three words.

For her mother.

Emily sat at the kitchen table.

She opened it.

The first page contained her newborn photograph.

Underneath, Rebecca had written:

She is loved.

The next page:

Six months.

First tooth.

Nine months.

Hates peas.

One year.

Walking.

Two years.

Sings everything.

Three years.

Talks to strangers in grocery stores.

Thomas laughed softly.

“She did.”

Page after page.

Rebecca had documented the ordinary life Lacey missed.

Not to excuse herself.

Maybe partly to prove Emily was safe.

Maybe because guilt demanded witness.

At age five, Rebecca wrote:

She asked where babies come from. I panicked and told her to ask Thomas.

Thomas laughed through tears.

At eight:

She asked why her hair looks different from mine.

At twelve:

She knows she is adopted. She says she doesn't care. I don't believe her.

Emily stopped.

“You told me at twelve.”

Thomas nodded.

“We never hid that part.”

“No.”

What they hid was who.

Why.

How.

At sixteen:

She said someday she might search.

Rebecca's handwriting became shakier.

I told her I would help.

Emily stared at that sentence.

“She promised me.”

Thomas whispered, “She meant it when she said it.”

“How do you know?”

“I don't.”

He corrected himself.

“I think she wanted to mean it.”

That was probably the most honest answer.

The final page was dated after Rebecca met Lacey.

No photograph.

Only handwriting.

I met your mother today.

Emily stopped breathing.

Rebecca wrote:

She hates me.

She should.

I expected anger.

I did not expect her to ask whether you were happy before asking anything else.

Emily pressed her fingers to her mouth.

Then the final line.

I think if you ever meet her, you will love her.

Emily closed the binder.

Nobody spoke.

For several minutes she simply held it against her chest.

Then she looked at Thomas.

“Mom knew.”

“Yes.”

“She knew I'd love Lacey.”

“Yes.”

“And she was still scared.”

“Yes.”

Emily began crying.

Thomas held her.

Jeremy stood beside me.

Caleb looked toward the window.

I understood what Emily was grieving.

Not only Lacey.

Not only Rebecca.

The possibility that if either woman had found courage sooner, Emily might have had them both.

Not perfectly.

Not peacefully.

But both.

The loss was no longer just twenty-two years between mother and daughter.

It was the family they might have built if adults had stopped treating love as a limited resource.

Click here to continue reading: PART 30: Thomas Read Rebecca’s Final Pages Alone, Then Asked Jeremy for Something Neither Man Expected to Share About Emily’s Future

“You've got five minutes to tell me why I shouldn't call the police.” Lacey's voice came through the laptop speakers sharper than I remembered hearing it in person.
