telling the truth is someone you still want.

If you leave, do it knowing I never won him from you.

There was never anything to win.

My eyes blurred.

Jeremy watched but did not ask what she wrote.

Good.

I folded the page.

Emily looked at me.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Fair.”

I slipped the letter into my bag.

Then alarms sounded inside Lacey’s room.

A nurse moved quickly past us.

Another followed.

Emily turned.

“What’s happening?”

The door opened.

“Family?”

Emily stepped forward.

“Yes.”

The nurse's expression told us before her words did.

“Her oxygen is falling again.”

Emily went inside.

Jeremy stayed in the hallway.

So did I.

Thomas arrived moments later.

We waited.

Five minutes.

Ten.

Then Emily appeared in the doorway.

Her face was wet.

“She wants all of us.”

Inside, Lacey was awake.

Barely.

The room had filled with machines and low voices.

Emily stood on one side.

Thomas behind her.

Jeremy went to the other.

I stayed near the foot of the bed.

Lacey looked at each of us.

Then she smiled faintly.

“Look at this mess.”

Emily cried and laughed at once.

“Don't.”

Lacey squeezed her fingers.

“I need you to listen.”

Emily shook her head.

“No speeches.”

“Bossy.”

“Genetic.”

Jeremy laughed through tears.

Lacey looked at him.

“Take care of your heart.”

He nodded.

“You too.”

Her smile faded.

“Bit late.”

He closed his eyes.

She looked toward Thomas.

“Thank you.”

Thomas could barely speak.

“I loved raising her.”

“I know.”

Then Lacey looked at me.

“No winning.”

I understood.

“No winning.”

Finally she looked at Emily.

The room became completely still.

“I don't need you to forgive anybody.”

Emily leaned closer.

“I know.”

“Not me.”

Emily started crying harder.

“Stop.”

“I just need you to live your life without thinking you owe us an ending.”

Emily pressed Lacey's hand against her cheek.

“You're my mother.”

Lacey closed her eyes.

The words seemed to settle through her entire body.

When she opened them again, she whispered, “That's enough.”

The monitor changed.

A nurse stepped forward.

Emily bent over her mother.

Thomas held her shoulders.

Jeremy turned away.

I moved beside him.

He reached for my hand.

This time I took it.

Not because our marriage had been repaired.

Because grief was happening.

And sometimes a hand is simply a hand.

Lacey died seventeen minutes later.

Quietly.

With Emily beside her.

And after twenty-two stolen years, the last thing she knew for certain was that the daughter she had been told was dead had lived long enough to call her Mom.

Click here to continue reading: PART 25: After Lacey’s Funeral, Emily Opened the Letter Jeremy
