sharpened.

“Find everything.”

Nathan nodded.

Emily looked around the room.

“At this point, I don't want anybody deciding which secrets matter.”

Her eyes stopped on Jeremy.

Then Lacey.

Then Thomas.

Finally me.

“If there are more records, letters, photographs, anything—I want all of it.”

Jeremy nodded.

“So do I.”

Lacey whispered, “Yes.”

Thomas agreed.

Emily stood.

The young woman who had entered the café two days earlier asking strangers not to replace her family now seemed steadier than any of us.

“We keep treating this like we're trying to find out who my parents are.”

She looked at Thomas first.

“I already know who raised me.”

Then Lacey.

“I know who gave birth to me.”

Then Jeremy.

“And now I know who my biological father is.”

Jeremy swallowed.

Emily's gaze moved to the papers scattered across the table.

“What I don't know is why so many people thought they had the right to choose my life before I could.”

No one answered.

She gathered the copies of the laboratory report and Evelyn's letter.

“These are mine.”

Nathan nodded.

“Yes.”

Emily placed them in her bag.

Then she looked at Jeremy.

“I want to see where you grew up.”

His face changed.

“My old house?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn lived there.”

Jeremy went still.

Emily continued.

“If she kept this much evidence with lawyers, maybe she kept something at home.”

“The house was sold after she died.”

“To who?”

“My cousin.”

Emily picked up her coat.

“Call him.”

Jeremy hesitated only a second.

Then he reached for his phone.

As he dialed, Nathan's laptop chimed.

He looked at the screen.

“Wait.”

Jeremy stopped.

Nathan opened a newly received scan from Evelyn's former attorney.

“What?”

Nathan did not answer immediately.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at Jeremy.

“There was a second storage instruction.”

Jeremy lowered the phone.

“For what?”

Nathan turned the laptop.

The scanned document contained Evelyn's signature and a handwritten description of an item she had ordered preserved separately.

One sealed box.

Release only to Emily Grace Harper, if she is ever located.

Emily stared.

The box had been waiting for her since before Evelyn died.

Nathan scrolled to the inventory description.

Photographs.

Letters.

Medical documents.

One infant identification bracelet.

And a videotape.

Jeremy read the final line aloud.

“Recorded statement of Evelyn Tolley.”

Nobody moved.

Evelyn had not merely left a confession for Jeremy.

She had recorded one for Emily.

And for twelve years, while every living person argued over what Evelyn had intended, the dead woman had been waiting to explain herself in her own voice.

<a
