meet us that evening.

Not because Nathan persuaded him.

Because Thomas called.

I listened from the other side of the café while Thomas stood near the restrooms with one hand pressed against his forehead.

“Caleb, I need you to come.”

Pause.

“No, I’m not explaining on the phone.”

Another pause.

Then Thomas said the sentence that ended the argument.

“It’s about Rebecca.”

Forty minutes later, Caleb walked through the door.

I knew immediately he was related to the woman in the archived photograph.

Same long face.

Same high cheekbones.

He was around sixty, broad through the shoulders, wearing a faded denim shirt and work boots.

He saw Thomas first.

Then the rest of us.

His gaze stopped on Lacey.

Every bit of color left his face.

“Jesus.”

Lacey stared at him.

“Caleb.”

He did not move.

Twenty-two years existed inside the space between them.

Thomas approached.

“Sit down.”

Caleb remained standing.

“What is she doing here?”

Emily had returned to the table five minutes earlier but had said almost nothing.

Now she looked sharply at Caleb.

“You know her.”

He looked at Emily.

His expression shifted.

Not recognition exactly.

Something closer to fear.

“Of course I know Lacey.”

Emily folded her arms.

“How?”

Caleb looked at Thomas.

“What is this?”

Thomas’s voice hardened.

“Sit.”

Caleb did.

Nathan introduced himself.

Caleb barely listened.

His attention kept drifting toward Emily.

That alone was enough to make me uneasy.

Nathan opened with the simplest fact.

“Twenty-two years ago, Lacey Burcham gave birth to a daughter.”

Caleb went still.

Lacey watched him carefully.

Nathan continued.

“She was told the baby died.”

Caleb’s eyes moved toward her.

“What?”

“She didn't.”

Caleb looked at Emily again.

His mouth opened.

Then closed.

Emily said, “I’m the baby.”

Caleb whispered something I could not hear.

Thomas leaned forward.

“Did Rebecca know?”

Caleb looked at his brother-in-law.

“Know what?”

“That Emily was Lacey’s child.”

Silence.

Thomas’s face hardened.

“Caleb.”

He looked down.

Emily said quietly, “Please.”

That one word did more than Thomas’s anger.

Caleb closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Thomas stood.

The chair scraped hard against the floor.

“You knew?”

“Tom—”

“You knew?”

“Rebecca told me after the adoption.”

Thomas’s voice rose.

“And you never told me?”

“She made me promise.”

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“Apparently promises are how everybody in this family commits crimes.”

A few customers looked over.

Nathan suggested we move somewhere private.

Thomas refused.

“No. Nobody gets another room to hide in.”

Caleb rubbed both hands over his face.

“I thought it was legal.”

Nathan asked, “What did Rebecca tell you?”

“That Lacey didn’t want the baby.”

Lacey made a stunned sound.

Caleb looked at her.

“I swear.”

“She told you I gave her away?”

“Yes.”

“I thought she was dead.”

Caleb stared.

“What?”

Lacey repeated it.

“They told me my baby died.”

His face collapsed.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Rebecca never said that.”

Thomas leaned over the table.

“What exactly did your sister say?”

Caleb swallowed.

“She said Evelyn arranged an adoption because Lacey couldn't handle motherhood and Jeremy wanted nothing to do with the baby.”

I felt sick.

Same story.

Different version depending on the listener.

Emily asked, “And what did she tell you about yourself?”

Caleb looked confused.

“What?”

“You slept with Lacey.”

Thomas turned sharply.

Caleb stared at Emily.

“Who told you that?”

“Lacey.”

He looked toward her.

She held his gaze.

“One night,” she said.

Caleb glanced around the table.

The humiliation of a decades-old secret being exposed in public crossed his face.

Then something else replaced it.

Regret.

“Yes.”

Emily asked, “Did you know I might be yours?”

Caleb did not answer.

Thomas stared at him.

“Caleb.”

“I knew there was a possibility.”

The entire table went silent.

Emily’s face hardened.

“How long?”

He whispered, “Since before you were born.”

Thomas struck the table with his palm.

“You knew Emily might be your daughter?”

“I didn't know.”

“You knew she might be.”

“Yes.”

“And then your sister adopted her?”

Caleb looked miserable.

“Rebecca couldn’t have children.”

The sentence hung there.

Thomas slowly sat.

I understood before Caleb continued.

Rebecca Harper had wanted a child desperately.

Caleb had slept with Lacey.

Lacey became pregnant.

Her parents wanted the pregnancy gone from their lives.

Evelyn wanted Jeremy protected from responsibility.

Rebecca wanted a baby.

Everyone's private desire had aligned around one child.

Emily.

Caleb looked at Lacey.

“Your father came to me.”

“When?”

“About six weeks after you told him you were pregnant.”

Lacey’s hands trembled.

“What did he say?”

“That there was a chance the baby was mine.”

“And?”

“He asked whether I wanted to marry you.”

Lacey stared.

“You never told me.”

“You hated me.”

“I slept with you once.”

“You cried afterward.”

Jeremy was not there to hear any of this.

I was grateful.

And strangely sorry.

Caleb continued.

“I knew you loved Jeremy.”

Lacey looked away.

“So you said no.”

“I said I wouldn't marry someone who didn't want me.”

The sentence sounded almost identical to Jeremy’s old position.

The irony was painful.

Nathan asked, “How did Rebecca become involved?”

Caleb looked at Thomas.

“My sister knew I might have a child.”

Thomas’s eyes narrowed.

“When?”

“Before the adoption.”

Thomas leaned back as if Caleb had struck him.

“So my wife knew Emily might be your biological daughter.”

“Yes.”

“And she adopted her anyway.”

Caleb nodded.

Emily’s voice was flat.

“Did she adopt me because she wanted to raise her brother’s child?”

Caleb looked devastated.

“I think she believed that was part of it.”

“Part?”

“She wanted a baby more than anything.”

Emily flinched.

Thomas turned on him.

“Do not reduce Rebecca to that.”

“I’m not.”

“Yes, you are.”

“She loved Emily.”

“I know she loved Emily.”

Thomas’s voice cracked.

“She was a good mother.”

Nobody contradicted him.

Because both things could be true.

Rebecca could have participated in something unforgivable and still have loved the child she raised.

That seemed to be the curse of this story.

Nobody stayed simple.

Lacey asked, “Did Rebecca know I was told Emily died?”

Caleb shook his head slowly.

“I don't think so.”

“How can you not know?”

“Because we never talked about the details.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Convenient.”

Caleb looked at her.

“You have every right to hate me.”

“I don’t know you well enough to hate you.”

That hurt him.

It also seemed deserved.

Nathan pulled out a document.

“There is another piece.”

Everyone looked toward him.

He unfolded a copy of a letter.

“This was found with Evelyn Tolley's papers.”

Caleb’s face changed.

“What kind of letter?”

“Written by Rebecca.”

Thomas went rigid.

Nathan looked at him.

“I am sorry.”

“Read it.”

Nathan did.

Evelyn,

I understand why you believe Jeremy should not be told until paternity is certain. Caleb has agreed not to make a claim. Margaret believes Lacey will eventually accept what is best.

Lacey whispered, “Accept?”

Nathan continued.

Thomas does not know the entire arrangement, and I want it kept that way. He would never agree if he believed Lacey was being pressured.

Thomas stood again.

This time he did not shout.

He simply walked away.

Emily watched him go.

Her face crumpled.

She followed.

Caleb covered his eyes.

“God.”

Nathan lowered the letter.

Lacey looked at him.

“There’s more?”

“Yes.”

Nathan continued.

If the baby is Jeremy’s, Evelyn, you must be certain he never discovers it. He will come for her.

My skin prickled.

Lacey stared.

Nathan read the next line.

You said yourself he cannot be trusted to leave the past alone once he believes something belongs to him.

I thought of Jeremy.

Stubborn.

Loyal.

Possessive when frightened.

Evelyn had known her son.

But again she had turned knowledge into permission.

Caleb asked, “What does that mean?”

Nathan kept reading.

The test should resolve it before delivery. Until then, no one can tell Jeremy or Jill.

I sat forward.

“What test?”

Nathan looked at me.

“I don't know.”

Lacey frowned.

“There was no paternity test.”

“Apparently there may have been.”

Caleb’s face changed.

“What kind of test could they do before birth in 2004?”

Nathan answered.

“Amniocentesis-based paternity testing existed, though it carried risks.”

Lacey shook her head.

“I never had one.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Then she stopped.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She stared at the table.

“When I was in Kentucky, my aunt took me to a clinic.”

Nathan leaned forward.

“For what?”

“They said there was concern about the bleeding.”

“Did they draw fluid?”

Lacey’s breathing quickened.

“I don’t remember.”

Caleb whispered, “Jesus.”

Nathan looked back at the letter.

“The next line says the result was delivered directly to Evelyn.”

The room went cold.

Emily and Thomas returned slowly.

Thomas’s face looked older.

Emily took his hand before sitting.

It was the first voluntary touch I had seen between them since the meeting began.

Nathan waited.

Thomas nodded.

“Finish.”

Nathan read.

Once you have the result, destroy it. No copy can remain where Jeremy might find it.

Jeremy’s mother had known.

Before Emily was born.

Before the adoption.

Before the lies became permanent.

There had apparently been a paternity result.

And Evelyn had tried to erase it.

Emily looked around the table.

“So somewhere, somebody already knew who my biological father was twenty-two years ago.”

Nathan folded the letter.

“Yes.”

Caleb stared at Lacey.

Lacey stared at nothing.

Thomas held Emily’s hand.

I thought about Jeremy sitting alone at home, excluded from the meeting because Emily had asked him to stay away.

If that destroyed test had named him, then his mother had not merely hidden his daughter.

She had known with certainty that Emily was his.

And she had given the child away anyway.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: The Destroyed Paternity Result Was Not Gone After All, and Emily Chose Who Would Stand Beside Her When It Was Opened

Caleb Morris agreed to meet us that evening.
