Jeremy at nineteen, his hand on Lacey’s stomach, smiling toward whoever had taken the picture.

He looked so young.

Not innocent.

Young.

There was a difference I had not understood when I was twenty.

I kept reading.

Before you and Jeremy became serious, he and I had already decided not to marry.

I stopped.

That was impossible.

Everyone had known they were practically engaged.

His mother had talked about them as though the wedding only needed a date.

Lacey continued.

We never told anyone because neither of us wanted to explain. I was pregnant, Jeremy was frightened, and we were fighting almost every day. We had loved each other since we were children, but by then love had become something we used to hurt each other.

The elevator reached the lobby.

People entered.

I folded the letter against my chest and stepped into a corner.

A woman pushing a stroller smiled apologetically when one wheel bumped my shoe.

I barely noticed.

Jeremy told me he wanted to do the right thing for the baby, but I could hear what he wasn't saying. He did not want to marry me simply because I was pregnant.

My throat tightened.

I remembered Jeremy telling me, during our first year together, that marriage should never be a punishment for a mistake.

At the time I had thought he was talking about his parents.

Maybe he had been talking about himself.

Lacey's next paragraph made me sit down on a bench outside the hospital gift shop.

I was furious. I told him if he wouldn't marry me then he must not love me. He told me if I needed a ring to prove he loved me, then maybe neither of us understood what we were doing.

I could almost hear Jeremy saying it.

Blunt.

Clumsy.

More honest than kind.

The argument ended with Lacey telling him she wanted space.

Jeremy agreed.

Neither of them told their families the truth.

Then I appeared.

I had known Jeremy casually before, but during those weeks we began spending more time together.

I had always remembered that period differently.

I remembered him becoming available because he had finally realized Lacey was not right for him.

I remembered believing I had changed everything.

According to the letter, the relationship had already been collapsing.

You flirted with him, yes, Lacey wrote. You knew we had been together. I hated you for that. But the truth is I had already told him we were over.

I lowered the page.

My eyes burned.

For twenty-two years I had carried myself through certain rooms believing everyone remembered me as the woman who had stolen Jeremy.

Some probably did.

I had remembered myself that way.

It had become part of my marriage's private mythology.

He had chosen me over Lacey.

I had won him.

Now Lacey was telling me there had never been a contest.

Not in the way I believed.

I kept reading.

Jeremy tried to tell you once.

My heart stopped.

When?

The letter answered.

Three days before your wedding.

I remembered those three days with painful clarity.

We had married quickly.

Not because I was pregnant.

Because Jeremy hated long engagements and because I was young enough to mistake certainty for maturity.

Three days before the wedding, he had come to my apartment looking sick.

I remembered asking whether he was having doubts.

He said no.

Then he had started telling me there was something about Lacey I should know.

I had interrupted him.

I remembered it now.

I had laughed.

I told him I did not care about his past.

I had kissed him and said, “Whatever happened with her is over.”

At the time, I thought I was being confident.

Maybe I had closed a door he never tried hard enough to reopen.

Lacey wrote that Jeremy had called her after leaving my apartment.

He told me you didn't want details. I told him to let it go.

A sharp anger rose inside me.

Not because I had interrupted Jeremy.

Because he had obeyed.

Twenty-two years.

He had allowed one careless sentence from a twenty-year-old woman to excuse two decades of silence.

Then came the part I had not expected.

After I miscarried, I called Evelyn. Your mother-in-law knew everything. She made me promise not to contact you or Jeremy until I had recovered. She thought both of you were too young and too emotional, and she believed telling you would only destroy a marriage that had just begun.

I could see Evelyn's kitchen.

Flour on her hands.

A dish towel over one shoulder.

The same woman who had treated me kindly from the beginning had known.

She had watched Jeremy and me build a marriage on top of a buried history.

The legal document inside the envelope was not related to the second marriage.

It was a notarized statement dated eleven years earlier.

Lacey had written it after Evelyn's death.

The statement confirmed that Jeremy had not abandoned her during pregnancy.

It described their breakup.

The miscarriage.

Their agreement not to contact one another.

And one sentence caught me.

I release Jeremy Lee Tolley from any obligation, financial or otherwise, related to the pregnancy that ended on June 17, 2004.

Why would she need to write that?

I turned the page over.

On the back was a note in Jeremy's handwriting.

Keep this somewhere safe. Jill can never think I left a pregnant woman for her.

My stomach twisted.

That was the part that changed everything.

He had not hidden the truth only from shame.

He had hidden it to protect how I saw him.

Maybe how I saw myself.

I folded the documents and sat with the envelope in my lap.

The hospital doors opened and closed as people passed.

For a long time, I did nothing.

Then my phone buzzed.

Jeremy.

I did not answer.

It buzzed again.

This time a message appeared.

Please don't drive upset. I'm downstairs.

I looked toward the entrance.

He stood near the revolving doors.

He had found me.

For several seconds neither of us moved.

Then Jeremy walked toward me.

He stopped a few feet away.

“You read it.”

I nodded.

His eyes dropped to the envelope.

“How much?”

“All of it.”

He sat beside me but left space between us.

“Then you know.”

“I know what Lacey says.”

His jaw tightened.

“She told the truth.”

“Did you?”

He looked at me.

I waited.

“Not enough.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“No.”

His hands clasped between his knees.

“No, Jill.
