the earnest-money payment while maintaining its represented reserve.”

I understood.

He might argue dollars were fungible.

The company had other money.

But my funds materially supported the transaction.

Daniel filed an updated recovery claim.

The duplex seller had done nothing wrong.

That complicated matters.

An innocent third party had accepted a contract and deposit.

The law could not simply rearrange everything according to my anger.

The hearing occurred three days later.

Not a criminal feel different.

Paper had become consequence.

Richard sat with counsel.

Denise sat separately.

Chloe was with Rachel.

Liam had his own family.

Richard’s attorney argued that some household funds had been treated historically as available for family expenses and that tracing specific dollars into the duplex was complex.

Daniel agreed tracing was complex.

Then he showed authorization limits.

Household expenses.

Not real-estate investments.

The distinction was Noah.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you destroying everyone?”

There it was.

The oldest trick in the family.

Boundary becomes laughed.

“Both remain possibilities around here.”

We walked toward the parking garage.

Halfway there, I heard Liam behind me.

“Mom.”

I stopped.

He approached alone.

“Can I ask something?”

“Yes.”

“Did you hear what Richard touching, but I’m freezing.”

Liam laughed.

The ordinary sound helped.

We walked together.

At the garage, he asked whether he could take me to blaming myself for believing every single thing.”

I considered that.

“Good.”

He sounded surprised.

“Good?”

“Yes.”

“You were manipulated.”

“I thought you said that didn’t excuse me.”

“It doesn’t.”

Silence.

“Both can be true.”

He laughed softly.

“You really like that sentence.”

“It keeps being useful.”

He had made harmful choices.

Richard had manipulated him.

Acknowledging one did not erase the other.

That balance was where truth lived.

That evening, I took down the Christmas tree.

Weeks late.

Emma came over to help.

Noah packed ornaments badly.

Liam sat on the floor wrapping lights around cardboard.

No Chloe.

Not yet.

That absence hurt.

But I did not fill it with speculation.

Emma removed the glitter house ornament last.

“Where does this go?”

I held out the box.

She hesitated.

“Can you keep it somewhere special?”

“Yes.”

“Because it says home.”

“I know.”

She looked around my living room.

“Is this still Dad’s home?”

The question stopped everyone.

Liam looked at me.

I crouched beside Emma.

“This is Grandma’s home.”

She frowned.

“But Dad grew up here.”

“Yes.”

“So it’s his too.”

I thought carefully.

“It’s part of his home story.”

She considered that.

Apparently satisfied.

Then she handed me the ornament.

I placed it in the box.

After they left, I stood in the empty living room.

No tree.

No lights.

No suitcases.

No people sleeping downstairs.

Just my house.

For the first time in years, silence did not feel like abandonment.

It felt like ownership.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Detective Ruiz.

Need to speak tomorrow. New evidence concerns the Dec. 30 closing and who was expected to attend in your place.

I stared.

I had assumed the forged documents were meant to make my presence unnecessary.

Apparently someone had planned for a person to appear.

I replied:

What do you mean “in my place”?

Her answer came a moment later.

The closing file contains instructions for a representative claiming authority to sign for you in person.

My pulse increased.

Who?

Ruiz responded:

We now have a name.

I waited.

The next message appeared.

It was not Richard, Denise, Chloe, Liam, or Curtis.

For the first time since Christmas, the scheme had reached beyond the family circle.

Someone else had been prepared to walk into the December thirtieth closing, present authority over my assets, and sign while I was hundreds of miles away.

And according to the closing notes, that person had already provided identification.

Click here to continue reading: PART 25: The Woman Assigned to Sign for Me Had Never Met Me, but Her Connection to Denise Explained How the Closing Was Supposed to Work

The duplex was modest compared with the property Liam and Chloe had wanted.
