understood.

Tasha wanted freedom from the gravity of the offer.

A prestigious opportunity can become its own kind of pressure.

I hated that too.

“What do you it?”

“Not yet.”

“She’ll cry.”

“I know.”

“Why give it to me first?”

Claire smiled.

“Because you taught me history doesn’t need a verdict.”

“I said something like that.”

“And Grandma taught me change doesn’t need applause.”

I looked toward Brenda, who was trying to take photographs without appearing controlling.

“And what did you teach yourself?”

Claire thought.

“That leaving isn’t betrayal.”

I felt that.

She continued.

“My family kept secrets because people were afraid of what happened if something left the family.”

I nodded.

“I want to leave home without treating it like rejection.”

“That’s wise.”

“I might hate college.”

“Possibly.”

“I might transfer.”

“Possibly.”

“I might come home.”

“Possibly.”

“You are infuriating.”

“Accurate.”

She laughed and hugged me.

Later, after everyone left, I sat in the empty school auditorium.

Again.

David found me.

“You’re sitting in empty rooms again.”

“Apparently.”

“Want company?”

“Yes.”

He sat.

Claire’s graduation program rested in my lap.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Actually?”

“Yes.”

We had ruined that phrase permanently.

He looked toward the stage.

“Dad would have liked her.”

“Arthur liked everyone who argued well.”

“True.”

Silence.

Then David said, “I’m thinking about retiring early.”

I turned so fast my neck hurt.

“What?”

He laughed.

“Not now.”

“How early?”

“Five years.”

“You’ll be fifty-four.”

“Maybe fifty-five.”

“That is ridiculous.”

“So was seventy-three.”

“I founded the company.”

“Exactly.”

I glared.

He grinned.

“Why?”

“I want more time to paint.”

“You can do both.”

“I do.”

“So?”

“I don’t want to wait until I’m too tired to choose.”

That sentence silenced me.

Arthur.

Empty space.

The future.

“Who takes over?”

“Priya could.”

“She’s CFO.”

“She understands operations better than most CEOs.”

“Does she want it?”

“Not sure.”

“Then don’t build a plan around her before asking.”

David smiled.

“You’re learning.”

“Stop saying that.”

“I’m not deciding yet.”

“Good.”

“I just wanted you to know.”

“Why?”

“Because five years ago I would have hidden it until I had a full plan.”

That was true.

“Thank you.”

He nodded.

Then said, “You hate the idea.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Caldwell still feels like our family.”

“It is.”

“If neither of us runs it—”

He waited.

I could hear the old fear.

Then what?

Then who are we?

Then what did we build?

I looked at the empty stage.

“That does not make it less ours historically.”

“No.”

“And it may make it more itself.”

“Yes.”

I hated that.

Which probably meant it was worth considering.

“Five years,” I said.

“Maybe.”

“Not sooner.”

“Mom.”

“Suggestion.”

“Good.”

We sat.

Then I thought about Tasha.

The choice not taken never disappears completely.

Neither does the person you might have been.

Maybe maturity was not eliminating alternate lives.

It was refusing to use them as weapons against the one you chose.

I looked at David.

“If you leave Caldwell, you don’t owe me proof that painting was worth it.”

His face changed.

“I know.”

“I mean it.”

“I know.”

“And if you stay, you don’t owe Arthur proof you preserved anything.”

He nodded.

“Thank you.”

That felt like the correct place to stop.

Not because the issue was resolved.

Because choice had been returned to the right person.

Click here to continue reading: PART 35: Fifty-Five Years After I Left Prom in Shame, I Returned to the Same Room
