hard.

My mother had believed she protected the next student.

She had not.

Not because she failed.

Because Oakridge had promised something it did not do.

“What happens now?”

“We are expanding the investigation.”

“How far?”

“District counsel wants all relevant records from 1960 through 1980 reviewed.”

“That’s better.”

“There’s another issue.”

I waited.

“Some of the records involve race.”

Elena.

Perhaps others.

“What kind of issue?”

“Donor correspondence objecting to nominees based on neighborhood, family background, and in at least two documents, explicitly race.”

I closed my eyes.

The story had crossed another boundary.

This was not one cruel mother.

One influential father.

One cowardly administrator.

This was a system deciding which students were acceptable representatives based partly on who powerful adults wanted protected.

Dr. Mercer continued.

“We will need to notify the board.”

“When?”

“Emergency session tomorrow.”

“Public?”

“Closed initially for legal consultation.”

“And after?”

“We’re discussing that.”

“Discuss faster.”

She exhaled.

“I expected you to say that.”

After we ended, Brenda looked at me.

“So this becomes public.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

She nodded.

Then she said the thing I knew had been frightening her.

“My father’s name will be in it.”

“Yes.”

“And Elena will tell what happened.”

“Yes.”

Brenda looked toward the window.

“I’m going with her.”

“What?”

“If she speaks publicly about my father, I’m going to sit beside her.”

“Why?”

“Because my family spent years making girls sit alone while defending themselves.”

Her voice shook.

“I can at least refuse to continue that part.”

I studied her.

This was not forgiveness.

Not redemption.

Not some neat reversal.

It was a choice.

One she had not made at seventeen.

“You should ask Elena before deciding where you sit.”

Brenda looked at me.

Then nodded.

“You’re right.”

I smiled.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“No, say it.”

“You’re learning.”

She laughed.

So did I.

Then the district emailed a scanned memo from 1974.

Three years after my mother had been assured the practice ended.

At the top was a typed heading:

SCHOLARSHIP REPRESENTATION—COMMUNITY SENSITIVITIES.

Beneath it was a policy note describing how administrators should consider “donor relationships and public suitability” when advancing nominees.

My mother had forced them to stop doing something wrong.

They had responded by giving it a bureaucratic name.

<a
