talent.

She admitted guilt so readily that it sometimes concealed how enormous the guilt was.

I looked at her.

“Did Anna send the messages?”

“Some, apparently.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Did you know she was watching complicated.”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“No more complicated.”

She looked at me.

“Did Anna know about me before Felix and I married?”

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

“She helped construct the candidate me.”

“Yes.”

I stared at Margaret.

“Then why did you choose me?”

Margaret looked toward Anna’s grave.

“I did not choose you alone.”

There it was.

The distinction hidden inside eleven years.

“Who?”

“Anna.”

Caroline stepped forward.

“My sister selected Nora?”

Margaret nodded.

“Why?”

“Because she found something in Nora’s file.”

“What?”

Margaret Friday.

“What did she have to do with the Blakes?”

Margaret said, “More than she told you.”

No.

Not her too.

I almost refused the possibility on instinct.

Then I remembered the farmers’ market photograph.

Felix had known the flowers were for my grandmother because Elise had told him.

The candidate file included “limited close family.”

What else had they known?

“My grandmother never mentioned your family.”

“She wouldn’t.”

“Why?”

“Because she hated us.”

That surprised me.

Margaret continued.

“Evelyn worked as a nurse at St. Alice?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She falsified discharge records.”

Margaret almost smiled.

“Apparently deception can be moral, depending on whom it protects.”

I did not smile back.

“What happened?”

“Alice discovered the truth about Daniel’s preferred the library.

I had accepted it.

Children accept the shape of a life without asking who forced it.

“Anna found Evelyn in my file,” I questions.”

I stared at her.

“No.”

Anna’s face changed.

“I don’t know whether their accident was caused deliberately.”

“Don’t.”

“I’m telling you what I know.”

“Do not imply Martin killed my parents unless you can prove it.”

“I can’t.”

“Then don’t.”

She nodded.

“Your father copied documents before he died.”

“Where?”

“Evelyn had them.”

“My grandmother.”

“Yes.”

“Did she know why they died?”

“She suspected.”

I thought of my grandmother’s hatred for institutions, her refusal to discuss my father’s old job, her habit of keeping paper records for everything.

“Where are the documents?”

“Hidden.”

“Where?”

Anna almost smiled.

“She left them to you.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“I handled her estate.”

“Not everything.”

My pulse quickened.

“What?”

“Your grandmother had a storage box at the library.”

I stared.

The library where she had volunteered for twenty years.

“What box?”

“Local history archive.”

“That isn’t personal storage.”

“It was when the head librarian owed her a favor.”

“What is inside?”

“Your father’s copies.”

“Why did nobody take them?”

“Because Martin never knew they existed.”

Finally.

A secret that did not begin inside the Blake system.

I looked at Anna.

“How did you know?”

“Evelyn told me.”

“When?”

“Eleven years ago.”

“Before my wedding.”

“Yes.”

“Why were you speaking with my grandmother?”

“Because I found her after seeing your name.”

My heart beat harder.

“She knew I was being selected.”

“Yes.”

“Did she tell me?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I asked her not to.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Anna’s eyes filled.

“She wanted to tell you.”

“Then why stop her?”

“Because if you refused Felix before marriage, the trust would simply choose another candidate.”

I stared at her.

“You wanted me to marry him.”

“Yes.”

“Knowing it was fraudulent.”

“Yes.”

“So that later I could destroy the trust.”

“Yes.”

A cold anger settled over me.

Everyone had a version of this plan.

Margaret.

Anna.

Maybe my grandmother.

“What did Evelyn say?”

Anna looked toward the dark glass roof.

“She said using you without consent made us no better than the people we were trying to stop.”

For a moment, I could not breathe.

My grandmother had understood.

Of course she had.

“What did you say?”

“I told her we had no other path.”

“And?”

“She said people who believe there is only one path become dangerous.”

That sounded like her.

So exactly that my eyes burned.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?”

“Because three days before the wedding, she had a stroke.”

I stopped.

“My grandmother had a stroke two years after my wedding.”

“The one you knew about.”

I stared.

“She had a smaller one before.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“She never told me.”

“She believed it was stress.”

“Was it?”

Anna hesitated.

“What?”

“There was something unusual in her toxicology.”

My body went cold.

“What?”

“Sedative levels.”

“No.”

“I cannot prove intentional poisoning.”

“Then stop giving me possibilities.”

Anna nodded.

“You’re right.”

I hated that everyone had learned that phrase from Margaret.

I finally picked up the folder.

Inside were photographs.

My father outside a Blake office building.

My mother beside him.

Evelyn at St. Agnes.

Alice in a hospital gown.

A much younger Margaret.

The original trust founder.

Martin, perhaps thirty.

Thomas.

Harold.

And a younger woman I recognized only after several seconds.

Ingrid.

They had all been there longer than I imagined.

I turned another page.

A photocopy of a handwritten note from my grandmother.

If Nora is ever pulled into this family, tell her I tried to keep her out.

My throat closed.

Anna watched me.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

“She didn’t choose me.”

“No.”

“She opposed it.”

“Completely.”

Relief arrived in the strangest form.

Not because the truth was good.

Because one person in my life had loved me without turning me into strategy.

My phone buzzed.

Anna looked at it.

“I didn’t send anything.”

The message read:

SHE’S LYING ABOUT ONE THING.

I showed Anna.

Her face tightened.

Another appeared.

ASK HER WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO MARRY FELIX BEFORE NORA.

I looked at Anna.

She closed her eyes.

There it was.

Another withheld fact.

“Who?”

She did not answer.

“Anna.”

Her voice dropped.

“Me.”

I stared.

“You were the original candidate.”

“Yes.”

“For Felix.”

“Yes.”

“And you helped replace yourself with me.”

Her face filled with shame.

“Yes.”

That changed everything.

Not because she had merely selected me.

Because she had escaped by placing me where she had been.

Click here to continue reading: PART 26: Anna Had Replaced Herself With Me as Felix’s Intended Wife, and Her
