clue?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca overlaid old publication addresses.<\/p>\n<p>One coordinate aligned with a decommissioned bonded warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Pier 14.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived twelve minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Police perimeter.<\/p>\n<p>Verified federal agents.<\/p>\n<p>No Malcolm.<\/p>\n<p>No obvious entry.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel saw a blood smear on an old freight elevator sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother basement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>We descended.<\/p>\n<p>The doors opened onto rows of sealed shipping crates.<\/p>\n<p>At the far end stood Malcolm Reed.<\/p>\n<p>Bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>One hand on a console.<\/p>\n<p>The other holding a lighter.<\/p>\n<p>Beside him, paper files were stacked inside an open steel container.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel raised his weapon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStep away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I burn this archive, thousands of people walk free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret said, \u201cIncluding people who deserve prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd people who deserve protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>The trap.<\/p>\n<p>Mixed records.<\/p>\n<p>Guilty and innocent together.<\/p>\n<p>Destroying all harmed justice.<\/p>\n<p>Releasing all harmed protected people.<\/p>\n<p>The same design problem again.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm held the lighter over the files.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me, Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho gets exposed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the container.<\/p>\n<p>Then at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody based on your choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd yours is better?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held up my phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich is why it isn\u2019t mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca had connected the distributed trust.<\/p>\n<p>Five of eight custodians online.<\/p>\n<p>The same structure we had built to remove my family from unilateral power.<\/p>\n<p>We could apply it here.<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019d let a committee decide?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d let evidence be reviewed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSlowly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really learned nothing from Voss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned exactly enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He flicked the lighter.<\/p>\n<p>The flame appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel aimed.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret whispered, \u201cMalcolm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were never Arthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither was Ethan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The flame shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were a doctor who chose control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel added, \u201cAnd I was your patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something crossed Malcolm\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>Shame?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough.<\/p>\n<p>He moved the lighter toward the files.<\/p>\n<p>A voice came through the warehouse speakers.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan.<\/p>\n<p>Weak.<\/p>\n<p>From the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca had connected him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMalcolm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He froze.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me the role made us permanent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm stared upward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hand trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt made us disposable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm whispered, \u201cEthan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Ethan Crane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The flame went out.<\/p>\n<p>Foster moved instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Agents rushed Malcolm.<\/p>\n<p>He did not resist.<\/p>\n<p>The lighter fell from his hand.<\/p>\n<p>The Baltimore client archive survived.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time since this began, another Voss did not replace the one being
