Hope you’re feeling better.

Another message followed.

Mom says she forgot to send cake home with us. We’ll grab some later.

I looked from his cheerful message to the parking records.

My husband had kissed me goodbye that morning carrying luggage for a flight he might never take.

I called the airline.

The automated system requested a reservation number.

I entered the one from his forwarded itinerary.

No active reservation.

I checked the number twice.

Same result.

I searched my email for older trips.

The pattern repeated.

Forwarded confirmations.

No company travel messages.

No boarding passes.

No airport parking.

I had never asked because Felix traveled frequently enough that the routine had become invisible.

Pack.

Kiss me goodbye.

Text from another city.

Return tired.

Drop laundry beside the washing machine.

Tell me stories about delayed flights and terrible conference coffee.

How much of it had been theater?

I went upstairs.

The closet looked normal.

His suits.

My dresses.

Two empty hangers where the clothes for Cleveland had supposedly been.

I checked the shelf where we kept luggage.

His largest suitcase remained there.

That wasn’t unusual for a short trip.

Still, I noticed things I had never noticed before.

An old hotel toiletry kit he reused.

Travel-sized toothpaste.

A stack of luggage tags.

Props, perhaps.

Or ordinary objects my frightened mind was turning into evidence.

I stopped myself.

Facts.

I needed facts.

At noon, I drove to the address on the parking transactions.

The garage occupied part of a mixed residential block.

No airport shuttle.

No conference center.

Apartment buildings rose behind it.

A medical office stood on one corner and a grocery store on another.

I parked across the street.

People came and went.

I watched for nearly forty minutes.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something that made me sit straighter.

A security camera above the entrance.

Another beside the payment machine.

If Felix had parked there eleven times, there might be recordings.

Getting them would be another problem.

I photographed the garage sign and address.

Then I drove away before anyone noticed me sitting there.

At a coffee shop several blocks away, I opened my notebook again.

I wrote a new heading.

What do I actually know?

Felix has been seeing Elise.

Elise is pregnant.

His family knows.

Felix thinks I don’t understand German.

His trips may be fake.

Someone warned Caroline away from me.

I drew a line beneath the final item.

That was the piece that didn’t fit an ordinary affair.

Why would anyone threaten a private investigator merely to hide adultery?

Why did a stranger know my name?

Why had Ingrid sounded less concerned about Felix’s betrayal than about what would happen when I learned the truth?

My coffee cooled untouched.

I opened the shared account again and studied the garage receipts.

Each charge occurred between eight and nine in the morning.

Almost exactly when Felix usually claimed he was boarding a flight.

Each was followed by a gas purchase.

Same station.

Less than two miles from the garage.

I searched the surrounding area.

Apartment buildings.

Restaurants.

A pharmacy.

A prenatal clinic.

I stared at that final result.

Prenatal.

Elise.

Five months pregnant.

Coincidence, I told myself.

But I had trusted coincidence for too long.

My phone rang.

Felix.

I answered.

“Hey.”

“You sound better.”

“I slept.”

“Good.”

His voice was warm enough to make my throat pause.

“Where else?”

I looked through the café window toward the distant garage.

“Just checking.”

He laughed softly.

“You okay?”

“Fine.”

“I love you.”

The words came easily to him.

I wondered whether he was standing beside Elise when he said them.

“I love you too.”

For the first time in our marriage, saying it felt like strategy.

After we hung up, I returned to the garage.

This time I parked farther away.

At 2:17, a silver SUV entered.

Several minutes later, a blonde woman parked nearby.

Tall.

Large sunglasses.

Loose cream-colored coat.

She stepped out slowly and rested a hand beneath the curve of her stomach.

Pregnant.

My heartbeat accelerated.

Elise?

She disappeared through the entrance.

I waited.

Five minutes.

Ten.

Twenty.

Nobody returned.

Finally I crossed the street.

I told myself I only wanted a closer look.

The elevator opened as I entered.

An elderly couple walked out.

I stepped inside.

There were four parking levels.

I chose the fourth.

The doors opened onto rows of concrete pillars and fluorescent lights.

My footsteps sounded too loud.

I moved between parked vehicles.

Then I saw the blue sedan.

Felix’s car.

I knew every scratch on it.

I had helped him choose it three years earlier.

According to my husband, that car was currently parked at a hotel in Cleveland.

Instead it sat fourteen minutes from our house.

His conference badge hung from the rearview mirror.

I took out my phone.

Photograph.

License plate.

Photograph.

Conference badge.

Photograph.

Parking ticket on the dashboard.

My hands stopped shaking.

The evidence did something grief could not.

It made me precise.

Footsteps echoed near the elevator.

I moved behind a concrete support.

The doors opened.

Felix stepped out.

The blonde woman was beside him.

He said something that made her laugh.

Then he placed his palm against her stomach.

She covered his hand with hers.

“I think she kicked,” she said.

Felix’s face changed.

I had seen him smile thousands of times.

I had not seen that smile.

Not in years.

“I can’t wait to meet our daughter.”

Our daughter.

The words entered me quietly.

That made them worse.

The woman looked toward him.

“Are you sure Nora doesn’t suspect anything?”

Felix laughed.

Actually laughed.

“She thinks I’m in painful part of my life—the years of appointments, hope, loss, and humiliation—and converted it into leverage.

The woman whispered, “Your parents really agree?”

“They’re already on our side.”

They walked toward a covered passage connecting the garage to a gray apartment building.

I waited until they caught my attention.

Security camera.

Pointed directly toward me.

The light blinked.

Once.

Twice.

I looked up at the black lens.

I had
