stunned.

“You believe me?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because Sarah is here.”

He looked at me.

Margaret continued.

“And I’m done deciding for her.”

That might have been the first truly good choice she made in front of me.

We used Samuel’s portable recorder.

Old.

Offline.

His testimony began.

Samuel’s voice filled the room.

Margaret covered her mouth.

I had not heard my father’s voice in years.

“If this recording is being used, then VOSS succession has continued beyond Arthur’s natural life.”

He explained the forged approval.

He explained Margaret’s intervention.

He explained Malcolm’s illegitimate succession.

Then he added something none of us expected.

“Any successor created through coercive identity conditioning is not legally or operationally valid.”

Ethan went still.

Samuel continued.

“If Ethan Crane is alive, he remains Ethan Crane.”

The gun in Ethan’s hand lowered.

His face broke.

Samuel had known about him.

Had tried to preserve him.

Margaret whispered, “I never heard this part.”

Ethan started crying.

Silently.

Not Voss.

Not an operative.

A man hearing his own name returned to him.

Gunfire came closer.

Daniel moved toward the exit hatch.

“Finish.”

Margaret turned on the recorder.

“My name is Margaret Bennett, born Margaret Voss.”

Her voice shook.

“Twelve years ago, I forged Samuel Bennett’s authorization to prevent Arthur Voss’s death from triggering a purge.”

She continued.

“I accept responsibility.”

Ethan unfolded the succession charter.

He placed it in a metal tray.

Then looked at me.

“Witness?”

I understood.

I stepped forward.

“My name is Sarah Bennett.”

Not Elena.

Not Mercer.

“I witness Margaret Bennett’s confession and Samuel Bennett’s recorded statement.”

Daniel added his name.

Then Ethan.

“My name is Ethan Crane.”

He stopped.

Tried again.

“My name is Ethan Crane.”

The second time sounded stronger.

He struck a match.

The succession charter burned.

Malcolm’s authority.

Ethan’s forced succession.

The Voss role.

All reduced to ash.

Then every device in the room vibrated.

Daniel checked his phone.

VOSS AUTHORITY STATUS: INVALID.

Margaret exhaled.

Ethan stared at the ashes.

“I’m not him.”

“No,” Daniel said.

Footsteps reached the door.

Ethan raised his gun.

“Now we survive long enough for that to matter.”

The steel door shook under impact.

Margaret opened the rear hatch.

I grabbed Samuel’s recorder.

Daniel grabbed the journals.

Ethan stayed by the door.

“Come on.”

He shook his head.

“I know their tactics.”

“So do we.”

“I know their codes.”

Margaret grabbed his arm.

“You’re coming.”

He stared at her.

Twelve years of anger passed between them.

Then he nodded.

We dropped into the exit passage.

Behind us, the evidence-room door exploded inward.

Malcolm Reed’s men entered.

And from somewhere above the cabin, a helicopter swept across the lake.

Foster’s voice burst through Daniel’s radio.

“Sarah, get out now. We have confirmation Malcolm himself is inbound.”

VOSS-2 had lost his authority.

But the man behind the identity was still alive.

And he was coming for the evidence that could erase him permanently.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: Malcolm Reed Came to the Lake to Save His Vanishing Identity, but Samuel’s Recording Gave Ethan One Chance to End Him Without Becoming Voss

We crawled through darkness while Arthur’s voice followed us. “Elena.” I hated the name in his mouth.
