Margaret alive had unsettled her.

That was not nothing.

I drove myself.

No convoy.

No obvious security.

Daniel followed far enough back that I rarely saw his headlights.

The lake cabin was ninety minutes away.

The road narrowed as I approached.

Trees crowded both sides.

Every curve pulled up another childhood summer.

He always hid it beneath the same loose porch board.

We had all pretended to search.

The memory hurt.

The cabin appeared beyond the trees exactly as it had in the photograph.

Smaller than I remembered.

Most childhood places are.

One light glowed inside.

I parked.

For a full minute, I did not move.

Then the front door opened.

Margaret stepped onto the porch.

Four years dead.

Seventy-two years old now.

Hair fully gray.

Thinner.

But unmistakably my mother.

My body reacted before my mind.

I opened the car door.

She took one step down.

Stopped.

Neither of us spoke.

Then I crossed the distance.

She opened her arms.

I hit her hard enough that she staggered.

She held me anyway.

For several seconds, I was ten years old.

Then fifteen.

Then twenty-eight.

Then thirty-three, standing beside her coffin.

Except there had apparently been no body in that coffin.

I pulled away.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let me bury you.”

Her face stone fireplace.

Same narrow kitchen.

Same carved marks on the wall where Samuel measured Emily and me every summer.

Even the old wooden fish above the mantel remained.

“You kept it.”

“I bought the property back twelve years ago.”

“Why?”

“Because Samuel told me this was where you would I.

“Daniel?”

“Probably.”

She smiled faintly.

“He always was terrible at staying out of things.”

“You know him well?”

“Well enough.”

That bothered me.

“Did you choose him as Emily’s contact?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Jonathan did.”

I stared.

“Jonathan died before Emily met Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Margaret stood and went to the fireplace.

She removed the wooden fish from the mantel.

Behind it was a narrow cavity.

Inside lay a sealed metal tube.

She placed it on the table.

“Samuel found this after Jonathan died.”

“What is it?”

“A letter.”

“To whom?”

“Emily.”

My skin prickled.

“Jonathan wrote Emily a letter?”

“Before she was born.”

That made no sense.

Margaret corrected herself.

“Not by name.”

She opened the tube.

Inside was a folded document labeled:

FOR SARAH’S SISTER, IF SHE EVER HAS ONE.

I stared.

Jonathan had anticipated that the Bennetts might have or adopt another child.

That Sarah might grow up with a sibling.

He had prepared for her too.

I unfolded it.

Jonathan’s handwriting.

If Sarah is not alone in the family, then the other child must never be treated as secondary.

I swallowed.

He wrote that any future sibling might become Sarah’s emotional anchor.

A person outside the Mercer bloodline.

Someone Voss could not predict genetically.

Someone who might one day become the safer bridge to Daniel’s work.

Daniel.

The letter contained a name.

Not his.

His father’s.

Reynolds.

Jonathan and Daniel’s father had worked together.

That connection predated all of us.

I looked up.

“Daniel wasn’t random.”

“No.”

“Emily meeting him?”

“Not random either.”

Margaret hesitated.

“That part is hard.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Say it.”

“Samuel introduced Emily to Daniel.”

“No.”

“At a legal-aid fundraiser.”

I remembered.

Emily had met Daniel through a professional event years earlier.

She always said they bumped into each other.

“Samuel arranged it.”

“Yes.”

“Did Emily know?”

“No.”

“Did Daniel?”

“Not initially.”

Everything folded back into old planning.

I stood.

“This is insane.”

“Yes.”

“You all built our lives around contingencies.”

“Yes.”

“You decided who met whom.”

“Samuel did.”

“And you let him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Margaret’s voice broke.

“Because we were afraid Arthur would find you.”

I walked toward the door.

“Fear doesn’t make this okay.”

“No.”

I stopped.

That answer again.

No defense.

I hated how much easier it made anger.

Then Margaret said, “There’s more.”

I turned.

“Of course.”

“Samuel did not arrange Emily and Daniel so they would fall in love.”

“Then why?”

“He wanted Daniel to have someone he could trust if the continuity system returned.”

“Emily.”

“Yes.”

“And they fell in love anyway.”

“Yes.”

“And Noah happened.”

Margaret looked away.

“No.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“Daniel knew biological succession might tell me Noah was planned as some kind of key.”

“Not by Emily.”

“By Daniel?”

Margaret did not answer quickly enough.

Rage hit me.

I grabbed the table.

“He had a child with my sister because of the system?”

“No.”

The voice came from the doorway.

Daniel.

He had entered.

Margaret closed her eyes.

I turned on him.

“You followed me.”

“Yes.”

“Did you plan Noah?”

“No.”

Margaret said, “Daniel—”

“No.”

He looked directly at me.

“I knew the possibility of hereditary archive looked like.”

“I know.”

He stepped closer.

“I made choices after Noah existed because I was terrified Voss would use him first.”

“Just like everyone else.”

“Yes.”

He did not defend himself.

That almost made it worse.

Margaret looked toward the window.

Then suddenly froze.

“What?”

She walked to the curtain.

A red light blinked in the trees.

Small.

Low.

Daniel saw it too.

“That isn’t mine.”

Margaret moved immediately.

“Down.”

We dropped behind the wall.

A bullet shattered the cabin me.

“Arthur found me.”

“Which Arthur?”

“I don’t know.”

The answer was somehow worse.

We descended.

The hatch closed over us.

The narrow crawlspace smelled of earth and lake water.

Margaret moved ahead in darkness without hesitation.

She knew every turn.

Halfway through,
