turned.

“You mean learn from it?”

“Yes.”

“Can we disconnect the registry?”

“Yes.”

“Do it.”

Vale shouted for the first time.

“No!”

Everyone stared at him.

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

“Why not?”

Vale looked toward the when that happened.

“How long until reconciliation finishes?”

“Forty-three minutes.”

“And the seed?”

“Handshake attempts every sixty seconds.”

“Can we block them?”

“Temporarily.”

“Do it.”

Rebecca isolated the registry.

A countdown began.

RECONCILIATION: 42:31.

ORPHEUS SEED: DORMANT.

For the first time in several minutes, nothing worsened.

Mark sat beside the wall.

His bandage was dark again.

A medic tried to approach.

He waved him away.

I snapped, “Let him treat you.”

Mark looked at me.

“I’m fine.”

“You’re leaking on government property.”

That actually made Foster laugh over the channel.

Mark finally allowed the medic to work.

Daniel stood at the registry.

He seemed unable to look away from the code revisions Voss had made while he was recovering.

“I built part of this.”

I said nothing.

“I don’t remember it, but it’s mine.”

“Under coercion.”

“Still mine.”

“Daniel.”

He looked at me.

“You know what scares me?”

“Tell me.”

“That I can’t tell which choices were mine.”

That was the first time I saw what Voss had truly taken from him.

Not six years.

Not credit.

Not freedom.

Certainty about his own mind.

Rebecca spoke softly.

“The safeguards were yours.”

Daniel looked toward her.

“How do you know?”

“Because Arthur would never build them.”

That helped.

A little.

The archive chimed.

Incoming message.

Not Voss.

Emily.

SARAH, COME HERE.

I opened the secure video.

Emily stood outside the room where the boys were resting.

Her face was pale.

“What happened?”

“Noah remembered something.”

“What?”

“He says Daniel gave him another instruction.”

Daniel came closer.

“When?”

“Before the second vault opened.”

Noah appeared beside Emily.

He looked exhausted.

“What did I tell you?” Daniel asked.

“You said if the red light comes back after it turns off, tell Aunt Sarah about the train.”

Daniel stared.

“What train?”

Noah frowned.

“The wooden one.”

The toy train in the second vault.

I remembered it beside the children’s books.

Daniel’s face changed.

“I don’t remember putting that there.”

Rebecca said, “Then we need to inspect it.”

The second vault was still accessible through the archive.

An agent retrieved the wooden train and brought it out.

Small.

Old-fashioned.

Blue engine.

Three cars.

No remembered.

Daniel removed it.

A physical microdrive.

Handwritten label:

IF ORPHEUS SEED ACTIVATES.

Rebecca loaded it into an isolated reader.

A video opened.

Daniel.

But different.

Weak.

Bruised.

A medical band around his head.

He was recording during his recovery.

During Voss’s control.

Daniel watched his damaged younger self.

On the video, he whispered.

“If I remember making this, destroy it.”

Present-day Daniel went rigid.

“If I don’t remember, listen.”

We did.

“They’re making me rebuild Orpheus.”

His speech was slow.

“They think medication makes me compliant.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“They’re wrong.”

The recording continued.

“I added a fault.”

Rebecca leaned toward the screen.

“What fault?”

“If they activate the seed using Noah’s biological profile, the system will appear functional.”

Daniel on the video almost smiled.

“But every reconstructed identity will carry a hidden marker.”

Vale whispered, “A tracer.”

Daniel nodded.

His recorded self continued.

“The seed will tell us where it goes.”

I looked at Rebecca.

“So if Voss activates it—”

“We can track every system that receives Orpheus output.”

Daniel whispered, “Including the other registries.”

The room changed.

For the first time, Voss’s move could help us.

But only if the seed activated.

Which required Emily’s custodian acknowledgment.

I realized where this was going.

“No.”

Daniel looked at me.

“We may need to let him.”

“No.”

“Sarah—”

“He used drones against children ten minutes ago.”

“I him.

“You know?”

“Yes.”

“And you’re telling us because?”

“I would prefer Arthur Voss not control a technology that makes everyone like me obsolete.”

At least his motives were clear.

Daniel studied the recovery video.

“The fault can trace the nodes.”

Rebecca nodded.

“If we can contain output before it reaches real-world databases.”

“Can we?”

“Maybe.”

I laughed bitterly.

Everyone looked at me.

“We are going to remove that word from the English language before sunrise.”

Foster’s voice came through.

“I support is.”

The door beside her opened.

No person stood there.

Only a medical console illuminated in the corridor.

On its screen:

SUCCESSOR CUSTODIAN ACKNOWLEDGMENT REQUIRED FOR EMERGENCY CHILD PROTECTION.

Emily stared.

“No.”

Voss spoke.

“Your son’s protection protocol has been suspended.”

A warning appeared.

NOAH REYNOLDS — PROTECTED STATUS EXPIRING.

I shouted through the channel.

“Don’t touch it!”

Emily stepped back.

“I won’t.”

Then another warning appeared.

UNPROTECTED IDENTITY WILL PROPAGATE TO PUBLIC DATABASES IN 60 SECONDS.

Daniel went pale.

“If Noah’s real identity propagates—”

“Everyone sees he’s your son.”

“And his connection to Westbridge.”

The countdown began.

00:59.

Voss had found his pressure point.

Not killing Noah.

Exposing him.

Emily stared at the screen.

To protect her son, she had to acknowledge custodian authority.

And that acknowledgment would activate the Orpheus Seed.

00:48.

Noah looked at her.

“Mom?”

She turned to the camera.

“Sarah.”

I knew what she was asking.

I hated the answer.

But this time there was no drone.

No gun.

No abstract threat.

There was a child whose entire hidden history would become public.

I looked at Daniel.

His recovery recording remained on screen.

The fault.

The tracer.

Our one chance to find Voss’s network.

I closed my eyes.

“Do it.”

Emily placed her hand on the console.

SUCCESSOR CUSTODIAN ACKNOWLEDGED.

NOAH REYNOLDS — PROTECTED STATUS RESTORED.

And simultaneously:

ORPHEUS SEED — ALL CONDITIONS SATISFIED.

ACTIVATION COMPLETE.

Daniel stared at the tracking module.

One node appeared.

Then another.

Then ten.

Then fifty.

Rebecca whispered, “Oh my God.”

A world map filled with lights.

The seed was spreading.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Orpheus Spread Across Voss’s
