authentication.

And finally:

Sarah Bennett: independent custodian.

My name.

My full name.

My stomach dropped.

Daniel had known who I was.

Long before tonight.

Noah stared at me.

“Why are you there?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel answered.

“Sarah, Emily told me you were the one person she would trust with Noah if everything failed.”

My eyes burned.

The recording continued.

“The archive will not release its master evidence unless all four roles authenticate.”

I looked at Mark.

Then at the speaker.

Rebecca whispered, “He built a quorum.”

Foster would have called it that too.

Daniel said, “If one role is missing, the evidence stays sealed.”

I stared.

“So we need Rebecca.”

Mark nodded reluctantly.

“And she needs us.”

The archive screen displayed a new prompt.

BEGIN MASTER RELEASE?

Below it:

FOUR AUTHENTICATIONS REQUIRED.

Then another sound shook the building.

Gunfire.

Much closer.

Rebecca said, “Sarah, you need to initiate now.”

“Can you authenticate remotely?”

“Yes.”

“Should I trust that?”

“No.”

Her answer surprised me.

“But Daniel built the system so none of us has enough control alone.”

I looked at Noah.

He nodded.

Mark inserted his hand beneath a scanner.

Rebecca’s remote credentials began loading.

The screen asked for Noah.

He placed his palm on the plate.

Then it asked for me.

I hesitated.

Outside the archive room, metal screamed.

Someone was cutting through a security door.

Mark looked toward the sound.

“Sarah.”

I placed my hand on the scanner.

The screen flashed.

AUTHENTICATION COMPLETE.

MASTER RELEASE INITIATED.

Then:

ESTIMATED TIME: 09:00.

Nine minutes.

We did not have nine minutes.

A camera feed appeared.

Armed men flooded the corridor above.

At their center walked someone I recognized.

Not because I had met him.

Because his photograph had been in Daniel’s files.

The senior official whose name had been circled.

He looked directly into a security camera.

Then smiled.

Rebecca’s voice changed.

“Oh God.”

I stared at the man.

“You know him.”

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

She answered with the first
