The lake stretched beyond the trees like a sheet of black glass, broken only by the pale reflection of the moon. I clutched Daniel’s documents under one arm and held Tyler’s hand with the other. Noah ran beside us, his breathing sharp and uneven.

“Stay low,” Foster said.

A shout came from inside the house.

Then another.

Men were spreading through the rooms.

The old porch boards groaned under our weight as we crossed them. A rowboat hung from rusted ceiling pulleys. old station wagon.

“Whose car is this?” I asked.

“My father’s.”

“You keep abandoned escape cars at childhood properties?”

“I the back seat.

I removed my jacket and wrapped it around him.

Tyler sat pressed against him.

For several minutes, no one spoke.

Then my phone vibrated.

No signal bars showed on the screen.

Yet a message had appeared.

COME BACK TO THE HOUSE.

Mark.

A second message.

THE MEN WITH ME ARE NOT MINE.

My skin prickled.

Another arrived.

THEY THINK I’M STILL WORKING FOR THEM.

Foster looked over.

“What does it say?”

I showed him.

He frowned.

Then Mark sent a photograph.

Emily.

Alive.

Sitting inside what looked like a motel room.

The image had been taken recently.

She held up a newspaper.

Today’s date was visible.

My breath vanished.

Noah leaned toward the screen.

“Mommy.”

A message appeared beneath it.

I KNOW WHERE SHE IS.

Then:

THEY WILL KILL HER WHEN THEY HAVE THE CHIP.

My fingers trembled.

I typed:

WHY SHOULD I BELIEVE YOU?

His response came quickly.

BECAUSE I’M THE REASON SHE’S STILL ALIVE.

Foster stared through the windshield.

“That could be true.”

“You just told me he helped kill Daniel.”

“I said he helped the people responsible.”

“That distinction is getting thinner.”

“I know.”

Another message.

DANIEL LEFT TWO ACCESS KEYS.

I looked at the chip in my hand.

Then:

NOAH HAS ONE.

I HAVE THE OTHER.

I stared at the require both.”

“Meaning nobody can reach the full evidence alone.”

“Exactly.”

That sounded like something Daniel would have done.

Separate the pieces.

Force people who did not trust each other to cooperate.

My phone buzzed again.

MEET ME ALONE.

I almost laughed.

Another message followed.

BRING NOAH.

My anger returned instantly.

“No.”

Foster glanced toward me.

“What?”

“He wants Noah.”

The next message changed everything.

NOT FOR THE CHIP.

THERE IS SOMETHING DANIEL LEFT THAT ONLY NOAH CAN OPEN.

I read it twice.

Then Mark sent coordinates.

A location thirty miles north.

Foster looked at the map.

His expression hardened.

“What is it?”

“An old county records the brass key hanging from my fingers.

“The one that key opens.”

I looked at Foster.

He slowed the car.

Noah continued.

“Mom said Dad would try to take me there someday.”

My heart began beating harder.

“What did she tell you to do?”

“Go inside.”

“And then?”

Noah swallowed.

“She said I had to choose who could come with me.”

Silence filled the car.

“Who did she tell you to choose?”

Noah looked first at Foster.

Then at me.

“Only you.”

I looked down at Mark’s coordinates.

The lake house was behind us.

Emily was alive somewhere.

Mark claimed he could reach her.

And Daniel had apparently left something that required Noah himself.

Foster pulled onto the shoulder.

“We need to decide now.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“We don’t decide.”

I turned toward Noah.

“Your mother gave you instructions because she trusted you to remember them.”

He nodded.

“So tell me everything she said about that door.”

He closed his
