THERE IS ANOTHER EXIT.<\/p>\n<p>I stared toward the old garden shed.<\/p>\n<p>It stood in the far corner behind the pool, weathered gray boards partly hidden by vines.<\/p>\n<p>There was a narrow rear door opening toward the alley. She warned me not to trust Mark and said someone inside law enforcement had compromised the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the sentence that mattered most.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence is hidden where we used to play.<\/p>\n<p>I knew immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The lake house.<\/p>\n<p>Our childhood summers.<\/p>\n<p>The fort behind the trees.<\/p>\n<p>The places where Emily and I had buried notes and cheap jewelry and imaginary treasure.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, she had added another instruction.<\/p>\n<p>The blue envelope contains the key.<\/p>\n<p>Find the evidence before they do.<\/p>\n<p>And if Mark tells you I am dead, do not believe him.<\/p>\n<p>I lowered the page.<\/p>\n<p>Foster watched me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know where she means?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Trust Sarah only.<\/p>\n<p>Emily had literally painted the instruction on a wall.<\/p>\n<p>I was not going to ignore it five minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Noah tugged my sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe blue envelope isn\u2019t in the float anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI moved it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed toward an old clock hanging above the underground-room shelf.<\/p>\n<p>Foster frowned.<\/p>\n<p>I removed the clock.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was a narrow compartment.<\/p>\n<p>Inside sat the blue envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Noah had known exactly where to bring us.<\/p>\n<p>I took it.<\/p>\n<p>Before I could break the seal, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard a woman breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>I knew that voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My sister was crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief struck so hard I had to brace myself against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNoah is with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Emily made a frightened sound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Noah reached you, they know where the evidence is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man shouted somewhere near her.<\/p>\n<p>Emily gasped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out of your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re already underneath it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood. Go to the lake house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Foster.<\/p>\n<p>Emily continued quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t trust the local police.
