back.

“Good.”

“I hope someday you believe I’m sorry.”

“I believe you’re sorry now.”

His face changed.

That was apparently more painful.

Because remorse did not create obligation.

I opened the door.

“Elena.”

I glanced back one final time.

“What?”

“I changed the trust back.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t do it for settlement.”

“Okay.”

“I just wanted you to know.”

I nodded.

Then left.

Outside, evening had cooled the city.

Dana walked beside me toward the parking garage.

“You okay?”

I smiled faintly.

“Still a strange unit of measurement.”

She looked puzzled.

“Inside joke.”

At the elevator, my phone buzzed.

A message from Rachel.

How did mediation go?

I typed:

He finally told the truth without making me responsible for it.

She replied after a moment.

That sounds expensive.

I laughed.

More than she knew.

Then she sent:

Photos came back from Nina, by the way.

My breath caught.

I had forgotten.

A link followed.

I opened it.

Hundreds of images.

Black dress.

Window light.

Rachel beside me.

Laughter.

Stillness.

Then the final series after everyone left.

Me alone.

Nina asking if I was ready.

Me saying no.

Then:

Take it anyway.

I opened the last photograph.

My eyes were tired.

My shoulders imperfect.

No smile.

Nothing polished beyond the obvious professional lighting.

But Rachel had been right weeks earlier.

I looked like I knew something.

The strange part was that I hadn’t known anything yet.

Not really.

Maybe the photograph didn’t capture knowledge.

Maybe it captured the moment I stopped requiring certainty before taking myself seriously.

I saved it.

Not to post.

Not for Marcus.

For me.

And as the elevator doors opened, I understood that the next phase would be quieter.

Less discovery.

More consequence.

Which might be harder.

Secrets create adrenaline.

Endings require endurance.

<a
