sign.

Trust turns casual remarks into weapons when placed in dishonest hands.

“Did he ever say I was irresponsible with money?”

Adrian hesitated.

“Yes.”

Of course.

“What exactly?”

“That you had significant debt.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That story travels.”

“He said the refinance was partly to consolidate it.”

I gripped the phone.

There it was.

A reason.

Not merely investment capital.

He had possibly justified the refinancing by assigning imaginary debt to me.

“Did he show you evidence?”

“No.”

“Didn’t you think it strange that seventy-five thousand dollars supposedly freed from my debt went straight into your business?”

Silence.

Then:

“When you say it like that, yes.”

I closed my eyes.

People saw what they needed when the arrangement benefited them.

Marcus lied.

But others had accepted lies because questioning them would have complicated profitable or emotionally satisfying choices.

That didn’t make them equally responsible.

It did explain why his stories survived.

After the call, Sarah sat across from me.

“You need to eat again.”

“I’m beginning to resent your relationship with food.”

“You’re beginning to resemble a hostage.”

I smiled despite myself.

Then my phone chimed.

Email from Dana.

Subject:

URGENT: LENDER RECORDS.

I opened it.

The refinance closing had not been conducted in person.

Remote signing.

Identity verification used an email address in my name.

And a phone number ending 4419.

Marcus’s number.

My heart began pounding.

Then I saw the next attachment.

A copy of the identification uploaded for me.

My driver’s license.

The image was legitimate.

But the selfie verification photograph required by the lender was not me.

It was a woman wearing large glasses and a baseball cap, face partly turned away.

The system had accepted it.

Sarah leaned closer.

“Oh my God.”

I zoomed in.

Dark hair.

Similar skin tone.

A shape of face close enough to mine for poor automated verification.

Not enough detail to identify with certainty.

But enough to tell me one thing.

Marcus had not acted alone.

Someone had pretended to be me.

And whoever she was had helped him take one hundred twenty thousand dollars out of our house.

<a
