we open it?”

Jessica’s attorney answered.

“My client consents.”

Aaron photographed the envelope first.

Front.

Back.

Seal.

Then he opened it carefully with a letter knife.

Inside were six handwritten pages.

The paper shook slightly in my hands.

The first line was addressed to Jessica.

If you are reading this after I’m gone, there is something I should have told you long before you became involved with the Sterlings.

I stopped.

Jessica looked down.

“You read this when?”

“After my mother died.”

“That was eighteen months ago.”

“Yes.”

“Before the second transfer.”

“Yes.”

“Before the first transfer?”

“No.”

My grip tightened.

“So after the first transfer failed, you read a letter warning you about the Sterlings.”

“Yes.”

“And you still proceeded with the male embryo.”

“Yes.”

Her lawyer shifted again.

I returned to the letter.

Elaine wrote that she had worked at Oakfield for fourteen years.

Most of the opening pages described her job.

Records management.

Consent verification.

Long-term storage files.

She mentioned Richard Sterling by name on page two.

Six years earlier, Richard had contacted her privately.

Not through Oakfield.

Through a former physician who knew both of them.

He told Elaine that a family member had embryos in storage and that a disagreement existed about future use.

Elaine wrote that she should have refused immediately.

Instead, Richard offered money.

Enough to clear her medical debt.

Enough to help Jessica, who at the time had been struggling financially after her first marriage ended.

I glanced at Jessica.

She did not look up.

Elaine wrote that Richard asked for only one thing at first.

Keep the embryos active.

Do not allow disposition.

She found a way to place an administrative hold on the account.

That explained the storage.

The fake destruction letter came later.

I read farther.

According to Elaine, Carter contacted her directly after Richard.

He said his wife had become emotionally attached to the remaining embryos and would continue raising questions unless she believed the matter was closed.

I felt something inside me go still.

Emotionally attached.

As though that attachment were a defect.

Elaine wrote:

Carter asked whether I could prepare something that would make Lauren believe the embryos were no longer viable.

There it was.

Not Richard.

Carter.

He had asked for the first fake document.

My eyes blurred.

Rebecca said softly, “Take your time.”

I kept reading.

Elaine admitted creating the destruction letter using an outdated Oakfield template.

She invented the name Martin Keene because she did not want a real employee associated with the false notice.

I remembered the signature.

The nonexistent laboratory administrator.

Now I knew why.

Carter had taken that letter home to me.

He had watched me read it.

Watched me walk into the pantry and cry.

Then held me.

I lowered the pages.

For several seconds, I could not continue.

Jessica whispered, “I’m sorry.”

I looked at her.

“You read this eighteen months ago.”

“Yes.”

“And stayed with him.”

“Yes.”

“You learned he had forged a clinic letter to deceive his wife about frozen embryos.”

“Yes.”

“And then you decided he was trustworthy enough to have a child with.”

Her face tightened.

“That isn’t what happened.”

“Then tell me what did.”

“My mother’s letter also said she believed you had agreed not to use the embryos.”

“I agreed not to become pregnant again.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew enough then.”

Jessica looked at the table.

“Yes.”

That was the first answer from her that sounded honest without qualification.

I returned to Elaine’s letter.

The next section concerned the original disposition directive.

The one supposedly giving Carter unilateral control.

Elaine said Richard later asked whether they could create a more permanent record in case Lauren ever challenged the storage.

She refused.

Carter did not.

According to Elaine, he brought several examples of my signature.

Tax forms.

A school registration document.

A property closing page.

My stomach turned.

He had selected samples.

Elaine claimed she told him she would not forge my name.

Instead, she created the form and left the signature blank.

Then, several days later, Carter returned it signed.

I looked up.

“So my signature may have been forged by Carter.”

Jessica answered quietly.

“My mother believed so.”

“Believed?”

“She didn’t see him sign it.”

Rebecca spoke.

“This is hearsay within a letter unless corroborated.”

“I know.”

But emotionally it fit too well.

Carter had access.

Carter had motive.

Carter had supplied signature samples.

And Carter had been willing to hand me a forged destruction letter.

I continued.

Elaine wrote that she witnessed the document anyway.

That was her crime.

Her complicity.

She regretted it.

Not enough to correct it.

Not enough to tell me.

But enough, apparently, to confess privately before death.

On page four, the story changed.

Elaine described Jessica joining Oakfield several years later.

Not because of the Sterlings.

Because she needed work.

Elaine wrote that she never told Jessica the full story while they both worked there.

Only fragments.

A wealthy family.

A hidden male embryo.

A father obsessed with legacy.

Then Jessica left Oakfield.

Years passed.

The account remained active.

Richard kept paying.

Elaine became uncomfortable.

She considered correcting the file.

She did not.

Then came the sentence that made me stop again.

I believe Richard is waiting until Carter needs the embryo.

Needs.

As if a child were emergency inventory.

Elaine predicted that if Carter’s marriage failed or if the Sterling succession dispute intensified, Richard might push him to use the embryo.

Six years before it happened.

She had understood them.

Perhaps better than I had.

The final two pages were addressed less to Jessica than to her conscience.

Elaine warned her daughter never to become involved.

Never to help.

Never to use her old credentials if Richard or Carter asked.

I looked up.

Jessica’s face had gone white.

“Your mother specifically warned you not to use her credentials.”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

“I don’t know.”

I stared at her.

“You had access.”

“Not after I left.”

“You knew her passwords.”

“No.”

“You knew the systems.”

“Yes.”

“And after she died, her credentials were used to override the mismatch.”

“I know.”

“Convenient.”

Her lawyer intervened.

“My client has denied using those credentials.”

“Then who did?”

He did not answer.

Jessica said, “Carter had a copy of my mother’s old notebook.”

I froze.

“What notebook?”

“She kept work passwords and procedural notes in a handwritten book.”

Rebecca leaned toward the camera.

“Where did Carter get it?”

“From me.”

I stared at her.

“When?”

“After the first transfer failed.”

My voice dropped.

“Why?”

“He wanted to understand why the clinic kept asking questions about the authorization.”

“And you gave him your dead mother’s password notebook.”

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

“You keep saying you were deceived,” I said. “But every time I look closer, you made another choice.”

Jessica’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

“Did you know what he wanted the notebook for?”

“He said he wanted to review old procedure notes.”

“Did you believe that?”

“At the time, I wanted to.”

That was more honest than pretending innocence.

I looked back at the letter.

Elaine’s last paragraph addressed Jessica directly.

Do not confuse being chosen by powerful people with being safe from them.

I read the line twice.

Jessica turned her face away.

Perhaps she had memorized it.

Perhaps she had ignored it.

Perhaps both.

Rebecca said, “Is there anything attached?”

Jessica nodded.

“My mother included a copy of a bank deposit.”

Aaron took it.

The amount was significant.

Sender:

Sterling Family Advisory LLC.

Date:

Six years earlier.

Memo:

Records consulting.

That connected Richard financially to Elaine.

Not proof of the forgery.

Proof of payment.

I asked, “Did your mother ever speak to Carter again?”

Jessica nodded.

“Once that I know of.”

“When?”

“About three years ago.”

“Why?”

“She told me he asked whether the male embryo could still be transferred.”

Three years.

Before our marital problems became obvious.

Before Jessica and Carter’s relationship.

Before divorce.

I felt numb.

“What did she tell him?”

“That it was still viable.”

“And then?”

“She told him he needed Lauren’s consent.”

My name sounded strange in Jessica’s mouth.

“What did Carter say?”

“She wrote it in a note.”

Jessica opened the box again.

Another photocopy.

Elaine’s handwriting:

C.S. asked whether earlier directive sufficient. Told him questionable and should obtain current signed consent from L.S. He said that would not happen.

I stared at the final sentence.

He said that would not happen.

Not difficult.

Not uncertain.

Would not happen.

Because he knew me.

He knew if he asked, I would say no.

And rather than accept that answer, he had spent years building a path around me.

Rebecca spoke softly.

“This establishes prior knowledge that fresh consent was needed.”

Aaron nodded.

“And Carter’s awareness that Lauren would not provide it.”

I looked at Jessica.

“When did you first see this note?”

“After my mother died.”

“So before your successful transfer.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Carter had been told he needed my current consent.”

Jessica closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Then whatever he told you later, you knew.”

“Yes.”

There was no room left for the story in which Jessica had merely relied on forged documents.

She knew at least enough to understand my consent was questionable.

She proceeded anyway.

I felt something shift.

Not forgiveness.

Clarity.

Carter had initiated the lie.

Richard had financed it.

Elaine had enabled it.

Jessica had joined it knowingly.

Different degrees.

Different motives.

Same result.

My choice had been removed at every stage.

Rebecca asked Jessica’s lawyer, “We need the password notebook.”

He looked at his client.

Jessica hesitated.

Then said, “I don’t have it.”

“Who does?”

“Carter.”

“Still?”

“I think so.”

Rebecca’s expression sharpened.

“Where?”

“His home office safe.”

I remembered Jessica’s warning that Carter was deleting records.

Now there was physical evidence too.

Aaron stood.

“We need to expand the preservation order and potentially seek immediate seizure or supervised access.”

Rebecca nodded.

“I’m drafting.”

My phone vibrated.

Margaret.

I ignored it.

Then again.

And again.

Finally a text appeared.

LAUREN PLEASE ANSWER.
