dining room into a distribution center.

She made piles.

Not by family.

Not by year.

By person.

ANNA.

EMILY.

GRACE.

DANIEL.

MARGARET.

THERESA.

SUSAN.

WALTER.

REBECCA.

Then another stack mother.

I did not say so.

Some comparisons helped.

Others arrived before people were ready.

Anna sat near the window reading the corrected annotation for what might have been the twentieth time.

Her name appeared correctly.

Anna Louise Mercer.

Walter Miller identified as biological father.

Her revocation documented.

The disputed withdrawal marked as unauthenticated.

It was only a piece of paper.

Yet every few minutes, she touched the corner as if checking whether it still existed.

Rebecca noticed.

“You can keep the original copy they sent us.”

Anna looked up.

“It's yours too.”

“No.”

“My adoption.”

“Your record.”

Rebecca crossed the room.

“Your correction.”

Anna studied her.

Then accepted.

“Okay.”

No protest.

No reflexive sacrifice.

That had become progress.

Maya arrived shortly after ten carrying certified envelopes.

She had prepared consent forms for each person receiving copies of archival records.

Rebecca frowned.

“More paperwork.”

“Yes.”

“Necessary?”

“Yes.”

“Fine.”

Maya smiled.

“You’re becoming easier.”

“Don't get used to it.”

Grace arrived next.

Then Emily and Mark.

Daniel remained in Nevada but had agreed to receive copies through Maya.

Margaret wanted nothing mailed yet.

She told Rebecca:

“I have spent ninety-three years with enough paper.”

Rebecca respected that.

Theresa wanted one page.

Only one.

The disputed consent page.

Nothing else.

Maya placed it inside a flat envelope.

No cover letter beyond:

Per your false withdrawal.

The corrected annotation.

A copy of the DNA results.

Anna watched.

Rebecca said:

“These are yours.”

Anna gave a small shake of her head.

“They're ours.”

“Yes.”

“But I want you to have your own set.”

Anna’s eyes filled.

“I spent years asking agencies for one page at a time.”

“I know.”

“I used to imagine there was a room somewhere with everything.”

Rebecca looked around.

“There was.”

“Yes.”

“And no one would open it.”

“No.”

Rebecca lifted the stack.

“Now you don't have to ask.”

Anna took it.

She held the papers against her chest briefly.

Then laughed.

“This is heavier than I photograph on the mantel.

There were times during the past month when I wished she could stand in the room and see what truth looked like once it was allowed to move.

Not destruction.

Not instant absolution.

Not chaos.

People receiving what belonged to them.

Questions answered.

Boundaries respected.

Some anger.

Some laughter.

Some relationships continuing.

Some not.

The catastrophe Carol feared had existed mainly in anticipation.

Reality was painful.

But survivable.

Rebecca reached Emily’s pile.

Photographs.

The Mama C picture.

Carol’s note naming her Catherine Emily.

Correspondence from the Daltons.

The letters Carol wrote but never sent.

The transcript of Carol’s search requests.

Emily touched the top photograph.

“Can I take the originals?”

“The personal ones, yes.”

“And the institutional records?”

“Copies.”

“Good.”

Emily looked at Rebecca.

“You sure about the pictures?”

“They're yours.”

“Some were Mom’s.”

Rebecca hesitated.

Then:

“Then maybe we split them.”

Emily smiled.

“That sounds more sisterly.”

“What, fighting over Mom’s stuff?”

“Exactly.”

They divided them.

Not equally.

Emotionally.

Emily chose the photographs from her childhood.

Rebecca kept later pictures of Carol searching.

Neither treated fairness like arithmetic.

Grace’s pile contained her original birth record.

Thomas’s acknowledgment.

Louise’s letters.

Copies of Ruth’s correspondence.

Grace held the birth certificate for a long time.

“My father signed.”

“Yes,” I said.

She looked at me.

“I spent years thinking he never knew.”

“He knew.”

“And still chose Ruth.”

The sentence was not accusation exactly.

But it deserved honesty.

“Yes.”

Grace nodded.

“I needed that to be true too.”

“What?”

“That he failed me.”

I looked at her.

She continued.

“People keep trying to rescue dead parents from their choices.”

My throat tightened.

“Yes.”

“I don't want that.”

“Neither do I.”

“He acknowledged me.”

“Yes.”

“He tried for a while.”

“Yes.”

“He stopped.”

“Yes.”

Grace folded the copy.

“All true.”

I nodded.

“All true.”

She looked relieved.

Truth did not always improve a parent.

Sometimes it simply made them real.

Daniel’s package was simpler.

Thomas’s letter.

Photographs.

Ruth’s unsent apology.

The cassette transcript.

No pressure to meet.

No request for forgiveness.

Rebecca wrote one note.

These belong to you.

Nothing else.

Before sealing it, she asked me:

“Want to add anything?”

I thought.

Then wrote:

If you ever want to speak, I’ll answer.

Walter.

No brother.

No claim.

No expectation.

Choice.

Rebecca approved.

Margaret’s papers remained untouched.

She to.”

Around noon, Maya received confirmation that Theresa’s envelope had been delivered electronically through secure counsel access.

Ten minutes later, Theresa called.

Rebecca answered.

“Did you get it?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then Theresa began laughing.

Not happily.

Not sadly.

Something between.

“My signature really does look ridiculous.”

Rebecca smiled.

“It’s not mean that.”

“What?”

“You're not going to tell me what I should want.”

“No.”

“Carol used to do that too.”

Rebecca froze slightly.

“What?”

“She learned eventually.”

Rebecca looked toward Carol’s photograph.

Theresa continued.

“At first, your mother wanted everyone to want what she wanted.”

“What was that?”

“Exposure.”

“Then?”

“She started asking.”

Rebecca smiled faintly.

“When?”

“Years pause.

“Good.”

That was enough.

No meeting requested.

No relationship invented.

A letter had been received.

That mattered.

By midafternoon, most packages were ready.

Then Rebecca came to mine.

My name sat on top.

Inside were Anna’s undelivered letter.

Copies of the intake
