why surviving the basement did not mean immediately living with family.

Mary explained as carefully as possible.

“Because being safe is more than having people who love you, and they also want to make sure you have doctors and people who know how to help when nights are hard.”

Lily considered.

“Can they visit?”

“Yes.”

“Can Emily?”

“We’re working on that.”

Lily rolled her eyes.

“That means laughed.

It was the first sound Carter heard from the hallway that did not seem connected to fear.

The DNA result arrived that evening.

Carter opened it with Brooks present.

Parent-child relationship between Robert Dean and Mary Davis:

Excluded.

Carter exhaled.

Dean had been wrong.

Or lying.

Mary was not his the exclusion was not what Carter expected.

He began sobbing.

“That means she’s still out there.”

“Possibly.”

“You have to find her.”

“We’ll investigate.”

Carter heard Evelyn’s same demand.

Find my child.

Different histories.

Same grief.

Dean had
