head.

“Older.”

Carter showed controlled photo arrays.

Sophie identified no one until Robert Dean appeared.

Her hand trembled.

“Him.”

Dean wore no visible ring in official photographs.

But a search of property seized from his house had cataloged jewelry.

Among it:

A silver snake wrapped around a black onyx stone.

Emily’s phrase suddenly carried another layer.

Daddy’s snake hurts.

Thomas’s tattoo.

Dean’s ring.

A child’s vocabulary had merged symbols associated with danger.

“What did Dean and Thomas say about the boy?”

Sophie thought.

“Something about him remembering too much.”

“Name?”

“I heard ‘Ben.’”

No Ben existed on the known victim adopted.

But the adoption file had been signed by Robert Dean.

Carter’s stomach tightened.

“Find Benjamin.”

The listed adoptive family did not exist.

Address belonged to an empty lot.

Social Security number inactive.

School record ended seven years ago.

Victor claimed he had not moved Benjamin.

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

“Dean got there first.”

“Where did he take him?”

“I never found out.”

Carter confronted Dean.

She placed Benjamin’s photograph on the table.

Dean’s face changed.

“Where is he?”

No answer.

“He was ten.”

Dean stared at the photograph.

“What did Benjamin remember?”

Still nothing.

Carter leaned forward.

“Did he see Margaret’s murder?”

Dean’s eyes lifted.

Wrong guess.

But reaction to the name told her something.

“Did he see Rachel’s?”

No.

“Howard’s?”

No.

Then Carter understood the dates.

Seven years earlier.

Before Rachel died.

Before Howard.

“What happened seven years ago?”

Dean whispered, “Grant.”

“What did Grant do?”

“He made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“A placement.”

Carter waited.

Dean closed his eyes.

“He sold the same child sick.

“Grant killed them.”

Carter felt the room go cold.

“Both?”

“Yes.”

“Benjamin witnessed it?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Orchard house.”

“What happened to Benjamin?”

“I moved killer, had eventually hidden a child from another criminal.

“Alive?”

“He was when I left him.”

“Where?”

Dean finally gave the address.

A church-run youth home in another state.

Benjamin had been admitted under the name Ben Carter.

No relation to Susan.

He was now seventeen.

Alive.

When investigators contacted him, he remembered Grant.

He remembered the murdered couple.

And he remembered the baby.

“The baby was called Emma.”

Carter checked the Orchard records.

No Emma.

Then Ben added:

“They took her somewhere after.”

“Who?”

“Dr. Foster.”

Elaine Foster.

Carter confronted her with Benjamin’s statement.

Foster broke.

The baby had been transferred again.

To a couple who paid Grant.

The first couple had discovered the fraud and threatened police.

Grant killed them.

Foster moved Emma.

“Where is she now?”

Foster whispered a name.

Emma had become Hannah.

Hannah—the little girl Eleanor Watkins remembered near Thomas’s house years earlier.

The supposedly unrelated clue from the neighbor was not unrelated at all.

Thomas had temporarily housed her during transfer.

“What happened after Thomas?”

Foster gave the final placement.

Hannah was now twelve.

Alive.

Living with an adoptive family who appeared unaware of the crime.

Carter sat back.

Sophie alive.

Benjamin alive.

Hannah alive.

Three names that had hovered around the investigation like ghosts were suddenly children with current lives.

But Rachel’s note about Victor still mattered.

Victor had not been innocent.

He had broken laws.

Hidden children.

Altered identities.

Chosen outcomes without authority.

Yet his attic was not a catalog of victims he intended to harm.

It was a catalog of children he believed he needed to remove before the network reached them.

The distinction did not erase his crimes.

It changed their meaning.

Carter returned to Emily’s name.

Hold until Thomas removed.

Victor had been waiting for Thomas to fall.

But Rachel had been dead three years.

Someone had kept Victor informed about Emily after Rachel’s death.

Someone inside Thomas’s house.

Carter looked through the photographs again.

Several were taken from inside the property.

Kitchen window.

Back hallway.

Upstairs landing.

Not from outside surveillance.

Someone had photographed Emily from within the house.

Thomas denied it.

Emily had not.

Lily could not.

Rachel was dead.

Carter enlarged the reflection in one photograph.

A figure holding the camera appeared faintly in a mirror.

Female.

Older.

Not Rachel.

Carter recognized her from earlier interviews.

Eleanor Watkins.

The elderly neighbor.

Carter stared.

Eleanor had not merely remembered Hannah.

She had been inside Thomas’s house.

And she had been secretly watching Emily for Victor.

<a
