her.”

“What did he say?”

“I couldn't hear.”

The Fairmont facility’s camera system had been wiped.

But the master key recovered deleted fragments.

Footage showed Aaron entering at 4:12 that morning.

Sofia left with him voluntarily.

No struggle.

She carried a backpack.

Aaron did not look like an abductor.

He looked like someone she trusted.

Carter watched the video twice.

Then noticed Sofia hand him something.

Small.

Metal.

A key.

Marcus enhanced the frame.

Number engraved.

317.

Carter’s stomach tightened.

Locker 317.

The storage unit where investigators found Hale’s folders and the photograph of the children.

But that key had already been recovered from Rachel’s belongings and used.

Unless there were duplicates.

Or the number referred to something else.

Howard Lane may have possessed another key 317.

Aaron and Sofia were not simply fleeing.

They were going somewhere specific.

Then a recovered email from Howard appeared in the master system.

Sent eight months earlier.

To Caleb Voss.

Subject:

IF I’M DEAD, SOFIA KNOWS.

Body:

She has the key to the original records.

Not Evelyn’s copies.

The originals.

Carter stared.

“What original records?”

Marcus opened attached metadata.

Project name:

ORCHARD.

Twenty-eight years old.

Older than the trafficking network.

Older than Rachel’s marriage.

Older than Daniel’s escape.

Carter felt the case move backward toward its true beginning.

Aaron had Sofia because Sofia held access to whatever existed before Evelyn’s system became what they knew.

And if those original records were real, they might explain not only how the network operated—

but who created it first.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: Sofia Led Aaron to the Network’s Original Records, Where Investigators
