Two police cruisers blocked the road at either end. A crime-scene van sat behind the curb, its rear doors open while technicians moved equipment in and out beneath the watch of uniformed officers.

Detective Susan Carter stood in the basement with Sergeant Linda Brooks and studied the section of wall Lily had described.

At first glance, nothing distinguished it from the surrounding concrete. The paint was the same dull gray. Storage shelves had been pushed against it. Several plastic tubs filled with Christmas decorations were stacked along the base.

But once the tubs were removed, the differences appeared.

The concrete covering one portion of the wall was newer.

Only slightly.

The texture was smoother. The color beneath the paint was lighter. Along the floor, a narrow seam marked where fresh material had been poured against old foundation.

Carter crouched and ran a gloved finger near the line without touching it.

“How long?”

A forensic technician named Andrew Cole studied the surface.

“Hard to say visually. Years, not months.”

“Could Lily have remembered it correctly?”

Cole looked toward the hidden room from which the child had been rescued.

“I stopped doubting her the moment we opened that steel door.”

The ground-penetrating radar team arrived just after twelve-thirty.

Thomas had already been transported to the county detention center on charges connected to the children while investigators worked to determine what else could legally and factually be tied to him. He had requested an attorney and stopped answering questions.

Carter was almost grateful for the silence.

Thomas had spent the first hour trying to shape every conversation around himself—his rights, his home, his daughter, his inconvenience.

The basement told a different story.

Radar scans began along the altered section of wall.

Cole watched the monitor.

After several passes, his expression changed.

Carter saw it immediately.

“What?”

He pointed.

“There’s a void.”

“How large?”

“Approximately six feet deep from this surface. Maybe wider behind the foundation partition.”

Brooks folded her arms.

“Human-sized?”

Cole looked at her.

“More than enough.”

No one spoke for a moment.

Then Carter said, “Document everything before removal.”

Photographs were taken from every angle. Measurements were recorded. The shelves, tubs, dust patterns, and floor seams were preserved in detail.

Only after the scene had been thoroughly mapped did the cutting begin.

The circular masonry saw screamed through the basement.

Upstairs, officers could feel the vibration through the floorboards.

Carter wore protective goggles and stood several yards back as powdered concrete filled the air.

The noise made her think of Lily.

Daddy brought another man.

They used loud machines all night.

The child’s memory was no longer abstract.

Carter was standing inside it.

The first opening revealed darkness.

Cole stopped cutting.

Everyone became quiet.

A flashlight beam passed through the narrow gap.

Nothing immediately visible.

They widened it carefully.

Air moved out of the cavity.

Cold.

Stale.

There was an odor.

Not the unmistakable smell of a recent body, but something dry and mineral beneath the concrete dust.

Cole stepped back.

“Get the medical examiner.”

Carter did not ask why.

She had seen his face.

The opening widened enough for the flashlight to reveal fabric.

Dark blue.

A shoe.

Then bone.

Brooks turned her head away for a fraction of a second before looking back.

Carter felt her stomach tighten.

“Seal the basement. Nobody unnecessary comes through here.”

The excavation slowed immediately.

What had begun as a rescue investigation was now a probable homicide scene.

Dr. Michael Evans from the medical examiner’s office arrived before two in the morning.

He inspected the exposed cavity without entering it.

“Adult female,” he said eventually.

“You’re certain?”

“Based on visible pelvic structure, likely. But I’m not certifying anything until recovery.”

Carter stared into the darkness.

“Any idea how long?”

“Not yet.”

Beside the remains lay something pale.

Cole adjusted the flashlight.

A handbag.

The material had deteriorated, but the metal clasp remained.

The medical examiner supervised as technicians slowly exposed enough of the cavity to document the position of the body and surrounding items.

A ring was found.

A bracelet.

A damaged mobile phone.

And finally a wallet.

Carter watched Cole open it under controlled conditions.

The identification card inside had faded around the edges.

The photograph remained recognizable.

A woman with chestnut hair and tired but bright eyes.

Name: Rachel Miller.

Carter read it twice.

Emily’s mother.

The woman Thomas said had left.

The woman Emily said slept downstairs.

Carter stepped away from the table.

Brooks whispered, “Three years.”

“Looks like it.”

“He’s been telling everyone she abandoned her daughter.”

Carter looked toward the hidden room.

“And making Emily believe the consequences of asking questions were her fault.”

Upstairs, the front door opened.

Officer Mary Davis entered the house after returning from the hospital.

She had stayed until doctors finished the first urgent examinations of Emily and Lily.

Carter met her in the kitchen.

“How are they?”

“Alive.”

It was the simplest answer and, for the moment, the most important.

Mary rubbed both hands over her face.

“Lily’s malnourished. addresses.

Domestic disturbance calls.

A pattern began emerging.

At a previous address fifteen years earlier, police had responded to an argument involving Thomas and a woman named Natalie Price.

No arrest.

Natalie had moved away shortly afterward.

Or supposedly moved away.

Carter searched the that, I stopped asking.”

Across town, Carter was discovering why Rachel may have confronted Thomas.

Among items recovered from the hidden cavity, technicians found a small digital recorder.

Damaged.

Corroded.

But possibly repairable.

More important was the handbag.

Inside its torn lining, Cole discovered a folded sheet of paper protected by plastic.

Several names had been written down.

Natalie.

Melissa.

Hannah.

Sophie.

David.

Beside each name were dates.

At the bottom Rachel had written one sentence.

If anything happens to me, look at Thomas.

Carter stared at the message.

Rachel had known.

Perhaps not everything.

But enough to become dangerous to him.

Then Cole brought over another item.

A key.

Small.

Brass.

A numbered tag remained attached.

317.

Carter turned it over in her palm.

“Storage?”

“Could be.”

“Locker?”

“Could be.”

Brooks looked at Rachel’s note.

“Maybe she hid evidence somewhere.”

Carter placed the key into an evidence bag.

Before sunrise, investigators began checking every business, storage facility, bus terminal, gym, and bank in the region that used numbered lockers.

At six-forty, they found a match.

A private storage facility less than five miles from Thomas’s former workplace had rented locker 317 for almost twelve years.

The account name was not Thomas Miller.

It was registered to Daniel Reed.

No such local person appeared to exist.

Carter stared at the rental document sent by the facility manager.

“How was it paid?”

“Cash annually.”

“When was it last accessed?”

The manager checked.

“Three weeks ago.”

Carter felt a cold weight settle in her chest.

Thomas had visited the locker recently.

Whatever Rachel had hidden or whatever Thomas had stored there had remained important for years.

She stood.

“Get the warrant.”

By midmorning, the team was inside.

Locker 317 contained no furniture.

No boxes of ordinary possessions.

Just metal shelving.

Plastic bins.

Photographs.

Children’s drawings.

Women’s jewelry.

Old identification cards.

And along the back wall, five labeled folders.

Each folder carried a woman’s name.

Rachel.

Melissa.

Natalie.

Karen.

Laura.

Carter opened the first folder.

Inside were photographs taken without Rachel’s knowledge.

The second contained medical records belonging to Melissa Reed.

The third contained newspaper clippings about Natalie Price’s disappearance.

Carter stopped.

This was not memorabilia collected randomly.

Someone had cataloged lives.

Brooks stood behind her.

“There are two names we haven’t seen before.”

Karen.

Laura.

Carter looked at the unopened folders.

“Find them.”

Then Cole, examining the lowest shelf, called from across the unit.

“Detective.”

Carter turned.

He held a photograph by its edges.

A group of children stood in a basement room.

Five of them.

Lily was there.

Younger.

Hannah was almost certainly there.

Emily stood near the edge.

Two other children faced the camera.

One was a boy.

The other a dark-haired girl.

On the back, written in black marker, were five names.

Emily.

Lily.

Hannah.

David.

Sophie.

Mary’s earlier suspicion had been right.

Lily had not meant other children in some vague memory.

There had been five.

Two were safe.

One was missing.

And the photograph proved there were still two more children whose whereabouts nobody
