Later compliance."

Linda's expression sharpened.

Thomas noticed.

"Exactly."

He placed a folder on the table.

"I learned things Richard preferred remain internal."

Margaret did not touch it.

"What kind of things?"

"Nothing dramatic enough for movies. Vendor pressure. Hiring favors. Retaliatory decisions dressed as restructuring. People suddenly losing contracts after disagreeing with him."

"Illegal?"

Thomas considered.

"Some possibly. Some simply ugly."

Linda asked, "Why didn't you report it?"

"I did."

"To whom?"

"The board."

"And?"

Thomas laughed without humor.

"Richard chaired it."

Margaret understood.

"What happened to you?"

"I was transferred. Then stripped of responsibilities. Then accused of mishandling confidential information."

"Did you?"

"No."

"Could you prove that?"

"Eventually."

He looked toward the window.

"My wife couldn't wait eventually."

Margaret said nothing.

Thomas continued.

"I spent eighteen months fighting. Legal bills. No income in my field. Richard quietly told people I was unstable."

The word caught Margaret.

"Unstable."

Thomas noticed.

"He likes that one."

Linda leaned forward.

"What does this have to do with Daniel?"

Thomas opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails.

Names.

Dates.

Internal memoranda.

"I still know people."

Margaret looked at him.

"You've been tracking Richard."

"I've been waiting."

"For what?"

"For him to do this to someone who had enough money and enough public credibility to fight back."

Margaret pushed the folder away.

Thomas frowned.

"You haven't even read it."

"I don't like what you just said."

"What part?"

"You've mistaken me for your weapon."

Thomas's face tightened.

"I'm offering evidence."

"Against a man you hate."

"With reason."

"I didn't say without reason."

Linda remained silent, watching.

Thomas leaned closer.

"Richard called Daniel's employer. He interfered in a property sale. That's not normal."

"I know."

"Then help expose him."

Margaret studied him.

There it was.

The seduction of righteousness.

A new role waiting to consume her.

Victim becomes fighter.

Fighter becomes avenger.

Everything still organized around Richard.

"No."

Thomas stared.

"No?"

"I'll take anything directly relevant to what he did to Daniel or the property sale."

"And the rest?"

"Give it to a regulator. A journalist. Another attorney."

Thomas looked almost offended.

"You could stop him."

Margaret shook her head.

"That is exactly the kind of sentence that got me into trouble with my son."

He frowned.

"What does Daniel have to do with this?"

"Everything."

She folded her hands.

"I spent years believing it was my responsibility to stop bad things from reaching people I loved. Bills. consequences. failures. discomfort."

Thomas said nothing.

"I am not replacing that addiction with the responsibility to stop Richard Collins."

Linda smiled faintly.

Thomas looked between them.

"You think this is about emotional growth?"

"No."

Margaret's voice remained calm.

"I think it's about knowing which problems are mine."

Thomas looked down at the folder.

After several seconds he pulled out three pages.

"These are yours."

Linda took them.

One was an email connecting a Collins-controlled firm to the courier service used for the anonymous letter.

Another showed communication between Richard and Charles Brenner days before Daniel received his job offer.

The third was more serious.

A message from Richard to Mitchell Crane.

Margaret read it.

Daniel is confused right now. Give him time to remember which relationships actually support his future.

Margaret's mouth tightened.

Below that was Mitchell's response.

Understood. We'll create space.

Linda's expression hardened.

"This is significant."

Margaret felt no satisfaction.

"What can Daniel do?"

"Potential employment interference claim, depending on additional facts."

"Would it restore his job?"

"Probably not in any meaningful sense."

"Then ask Daniel what he wants."

Thomas looked surprised.

"You aren't going to decide?"

Margaret almost laughed.

"No."

Linda gathered the documents.

"How did you obtain these?"

Thomas answered carefully.

"Lawfully."

Linda gave him a look.

"That's not an explanation."

"I'll provide chain of custody if Daniel pursues anything."

They spoke for another twenty minutes.

Before leaving, Thomas stopped Margaret.

"For what it's worth, I respect your answer."

"I wasn't looking for approval."

He smiled.

"No. I suppose that's the point."

Margaret left with Linda.

Outside, courthouse bells marked eleven.

Linda tucked the folder into her bag.

"You handled that well."

Margaret looked at her.

"Don't praise me yet."

"Why?"

"Part of me wanted to take everything he had and burn his life down."

Linda laughed.

"There she is."

Margaret smiled.

"Robert would have approved of the first answer."

"And the second thought?"

"He would have helped gather firewood."

Later that day, Daniel received copies of the emails.

He was sitting at home when they arrived.

Sarah read the message from Richard to Mitchell over his shoulder.

Her face went white.

"He did this."

Daniel stared at the screen.

For days he had suspected.

Now there was proof.

Sarah whispered, "I'm sorry."

Daniel turned.

"For what?"

"My father."

"You aren't responsible for him."

The words came automatically.

Then Daniel paused.

He realized how much he meant them.

Sarah closed the laptop.

"What are you going to do?"

"I don't know."

"You can sue them."

"Probably."

"Do you want to?"

Daniel stood.

He paced toward the window.

A month earlier, the answer would have been immediate.

Justice.

Money.

Restoration.

Now he thought about Margaret refusing to turn the dispute into punishment.

"What would I get?"

Sarah frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"If I win."

"Compensation."

"Maybe."

"Your reputation back."

"Would I want to work there?"

"No."

"Would Mitchell apologize because he meant it or because lawyers told him to?"

Sarah had no answer.

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.

"I want a job."

"So focus on that."

"What about Dad?"

Sarah corrected herself immediately.

"My dad."

Daniel looked at her.

"He's still your father."

"Not sure what that means anymore."

"It means whatever you decide it means."

Sarah laughed softly.

"You sound like Margaret."

"Terrifying, isn't it?"

That evening Daniel had his second interview with a regional financial services company named Northbridge Advisory.

The office occupied a renovated warehouse.

No marble lobby.

No private elevator.

No portraits of founders staring down from wood-paneled walls.

The managing partner, Rachel Kim, wore rolled-up sleeves and drank coffee from a chipped mug.

Daniel liked her immediately.

She looked at his résumé.

"You've had strong advancement."

"Yes."

"Then sudden administrative leave."

Daniel had known the question would come.

He could lie.

Call it a personal transition.

Avoid discussing pending issues.

Instead he said, "My former employer received pressure from someone connected to my family."

Rachel's eyebrows rose.

"That sounds complicated."

"It is."

"Was there misconduct?"

"By me?"

"Yes."

"No."

"Can you prove that?"

"I can."

She nodded.

"Then what are you worried I'll discover?"

Daniel blinked.

The question was more perceptive than he expected.

"That I got opportunities because of connections."

Rachel waited.

Daniel continued.

"My father-in-law introduced me to my former boss."

"Did he do your work?"

"No."

"Then don't confess to crimes you didn't commit."

Daniel almost smiled.

Rachel leaned back.

"Connections open doors. Performance determines whether you stay."

Daniel thought of Robert.

"Sometimes connections also close doors."

"That's true."

She closed the résumé.

"Why do you want this job?"

Daniel gave the answer he had written with Sarah.

"I want to build something another person's anger can't take away."

Rachel studied him.

"That's an unusual answer."

"Bad unusual?"

"Still deciding."

Two days later she offered him the position.

The salary was twenty-seven percent lower than his previous one.

The title was one level lower.

The benefits were good.

Daniel accepted before fear could reorganize the facts.

Then he called Margaret.

"I got a job."

Her voice brightened.

"You did?"

"Northbridge."

"Do I know them?"

"No."

"Excellent."

Daniel laughed.

"That's exactly what Sarah said."

"When do you start?"

"Monday."

"Are you happy?"

He looked around the rented apartment listings open on his laptop.

"I think so."

"Only think?"

"I've spent years measuring jobs by title and salary."

"What are you measuring now?"

Daniel considered.

"Whether I can sleep."

Margaret smiled into the phone.

"Your father would like that."

Daniel's first week at Northbridge was humbling.

His office was half the size.

He had no assistant.

He spent two hours learning a software system handled previously by junior staff.

Nobody cared that Richard Collins knew important people.

Nobody seemed particularly impressed by Daniel's former title.

For the first time in years, he felt ordinary.

To his surprise, ordinary began to feel safe.

At the end of the week, he returned home to find Sarah surrounded by cardboard boxes.

"What happened?"

"We're moving."

Daniel stared.

"Did we get approved?"

She smiled.

"Two-bedroom townhouse. Fifteen minutes from your new office."

He looked around.

The furniture they owned suddenly seemed excessive.

"What are we taking?"

"Not much."

Sarah held up a crystal vase Richard had given them.

"This?"

Daniel considered.

"Do you like it?"

"No."

"Then no."

She laughed.

They spent the weekend sorting.

Keep.

Sell.

Donate.

Return.

With each object, Sarah asked the same question.

Do we actually want this?

Sometimes neither knew.

That became its own answer.

On Sunday afternoon, Margaret visited.

She stood amid boxes while Daniel wrapped plates in newspaper.

"You need help?"

Daniel looked at her suspiciously.

"Define help."

Margaret laughed.

"I can carry boxes."

"Accepted."

"No checks."

"Definitely not."

"No buying furniture."

"We own furniture."

"No secretly paying security deposits."

"Mom."

"Just establishing boundaries."

Sarah emerged from the hallway.

"I already paid it."

Margaret smiled.

"Good."

They worked until evening.

At one point Margaret found Robert's letter resting inside a kitchen drawer.

"You keep this here?"

Daniel nodded.

"I read it when I start feeling sorry for myself."

"Your father would be delighted to know he's annoying you posthumously."

Daniel laughed.

Later they ate pizza on the floor.

No dining table.

No expensive glasses.

No carefully curated room.

Sarah looked around.

"You know what's strange?"

"What?" Margaret asked.

"This feels more like our house than the other house ever did."

Daniel corrected her.

"Townhouse."

Sarah threw a napkin at him.

Margaret watched them.

Not healed.

Not finished.

But choosing.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Thomas Avery.

I sent the rest of my evidence to the appropriate authorities.
