through me.

At the three-hour mark, I checked the surgery board.

Allison’s identification number still showed procedure in progress.

Dr. Mehta had estimated two hours.

Maybe three if they needed additional sampling.

I told myself delay did not mean disaster.

Then I repeated it.

Then again.

Rachel returned after nod.

“Good.”

I did not ask for praise.

That felt like progress too.

At four hours, I went to the desk.

“Is there any update?”

The receptionist checked.

“Still in surgery.”

“That’s all?”

“Yes.”

“Can someone tell me why it’s taking longer?”

“She’ll have the surgeon speak with you when possible.”

I walked back.

Rachel watched my face.

“No information?”

“No.”

She handed me coffee.

“I didn’t ask for this.”

“No.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

I took one sip and nearly gagged.

“This is terrible.”

“It’s hospital coffee.”

“That isn’t a defense.”

Rachel almost smiled.

Then her expression changed.

“You know, when I had surgery, my husband left the waiting room.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“He said he needed air.”

“How long?”

“Six hours.”

I stopped too busy learning I had cancer.”

I looked toward the operating doors.

“Is that why your marriage ended?”

“Not exactly.”

She stared into her coffee.

“But it told me what kind of marriage I had.”

I waited.

“He was scared,” she said. “That was always his explanation.”

Rachel looked at me.

“Fear becomes an excuse for selfishness really fast if you let it.”

I absorbed that.

“So you think Allison should leave me.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You don’t have to.”

Rachel sighed.

“I think Allison should decide based on who you actually doorway.

“Family of Allison Parker?”

I stood so fast coffee spilled onto my hand.

“Yes.”

“Dr. Mehta would like to speak with you.”

My throat closed.

Rachel stood beside me.

The nurse led us into a small consultation room.

No Allison.

No smile.

Just chairs and a box of tissues.

Every terrible story I had ever heard about hospitals seemed to live in that room.

Dr. Mehta entered.

She looked tired.

I searched her face.

“Is she okay?”

“She is stable.”

Relief came first.

Then the word stable frightened me.

“What happened?”

Dr. Mehta sat.

“The mass was more adherent than imaging suggested.”

Rachel leaned forward.

“To what?”

“Primarily surrounding tissue near the pelvic sidewall.”

My mouth went dry.

“Was it cancer?”

“The rapid pathology suggests malignancy.”

The sentence did not register cleanly.

I heard each word.

They did not become meaning until Rachel inhaled sharply beside me.

“Cancer?” I said.

“Yes.”

My hands went cold.

“What kind?”

“We need final pathology before I can answer with confidence.”

“Did it spread?”

“There was suspicious tissue and the enlarged lymph node.”

Allison’s choice.

The authorization.

My stomach dropped.

“What did you remove?”

Dr. Mehta looked directly at me.

“The left ovary and fallopian tube, the mass, several lymph nodes, and visible suspicious tissue.”

I waited.

“And?”

“We preserved her uterus and right ovary.”

I closed my eyes.

The relief was so intense it immediately collided with guilt.

Cancer.

I was relieved about an ovary while my wife had cancer.

“Why?”

“Frozen section suggested a type and distribution where limited fertility-sparing surgery may be appropriate at this stage.”

Rachel spoke.

“So you did not see widespread disease?”

“Not obvious widespread disease.”

The qualification mattered.

“Is that good?”

“It is better than finding extensive disease.”

“But?”

“We need final pathology.”

Every answer created another waiting period.

“What stage?”

“Too early to determine.”

“Chemo?”

“Possibly.”

“More surgery?”

“Possibly.”

The word became unbearable.

“Can I see her?”

“She’s in recovery.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

I pressed both hands against my face.

Rachel asked the medical questions I had forgotten.

Margins.

Nodes.

Potential histology.

Genetic implications.

Dr. Mehta answered what she could.

When she left, I stayed seated.

Rachel did not speak.

For several minutes, the room contained only the humming fluorescent light.

Then I said, “She has cancer.”

Rachel nodded.

“She does.”

I expected myself to cry.

Instead I felt strangely clear.

“What do I tell her?”

“The truth.”

“I know.”

“She asked for it.”

“I know.”

Rachel leaned back.

“Don’t give her every possibility at once.”

“That feels like softening.”

“No. It’s sequencing.”

I looked at her.

“Tell her what is known. Then tell her what isn’t.”

I nodded.

“What is known,” I repeated.

“She is alive. Surgery is over. They removed the mass. They preserved fertility structures. Initial pathology suggests cancer.”

I swallowed.

“And what isn’t?”

“Exact type. Stage. Whether nodes are positive. Whether she needs chemo.”

I repeated it mentally.

This was not a script for controlling her reaction.

It was a way to avoid drowning her in my panic.

An hour later, a nurse led me into recovery.

Allison looked smaller under the blankets.

Her skin was pale.

Her lips dry.

There were tubes and monitors again.

I sat beside her.

Her eyes opened.

For a moment, she looked confused.

Then she remembered.

Her hand moved weakly toward her abdomen.

“Did they take everything?”

“No.”

Her eyes focused on mine.

“No?”

“They preserved your uterus and right ovary.”

Tears appeared immediately.

She closed her eyes.

“Okay.”

I waited.

Then she looked at me again.

“What did they find?”

My chest tightened.

This was the promise.

No softened version.

“The quick pathology looks like cancer.”

Allison stared at me.

The monitors continued beeping.

“What?”

“They think the mass is malignant.”

She blinked several times.

“But they don’t know final type or stage yet.”

Her lips parted.

No sound came.

I reached for her hand.

She did not take mine.

That hurt.

I left my hand on the blanket between us.

“Cancer.”

“Yes.”

She stared at the ceiling.

“They said maybe benign.”

“I know.”

“They said imaging couldn’t tell.”

“I know.”

Her breathing became faster.

A nurse looked over.

I stayed still.

“Did it spread?”

“They removed suspicious tissue and some lymph nodes.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“They don’t know yet.”

“Did Dr. Mehta think it spread?”

“She said there wasn’t obvious widespread disease.”

Tears slid down Allison’s temples.

“I knew it.”

“No.”

“I knew something was wrong.”

“You were scared.”

“I knew.”

She turned her head away.

“I waited.”

The guilt arrived exactly where I feared it would.

“I waited because I wanted Mateo.”

I swallowed.

“Allison.”

“What if I made it spread?”

“We don’t know that.”

“What if I did?”

Her voice cracked.

“I chose pregnancy.”

“You made decisions with doctors based on the information you had.”

“Stop.”

I fell silent.

She cried quietly.

“I don’t need the correct sentence.”

That hurt because I knew what she meant.

I had started reciting Dr. Mehta.

I had converted grief into facts.

“I’m sorry.”

She looked at me.

“I don’t know what to say.”

“That’s better.”

I nodded.

Then I said, “I’m scared.”

Her face changed.

I remembered the promise.

“But you don’t have to take care of that.”

She watched me.

“I booked a therapist.”

“What?”

“Before surgery.”

A faint, incredulous expression crossed her face.

“You booked therapy while I was being prepped?”

“Technically after.”

“Daniel.”

“I know.”

To my surprise, she laughed once.

Then cried harder.

I moved closer.

This time she reached for me.

I held her hand.

“I have cancer,” she whispered.

“Yes.”

The word felt brutal.

But she had asked for truth.

“I have a baby who’s a week Mateo?”

“With your mom.”

Her eyes opened immediately.

“Mom?”

“Rachel decided.”

She looked anxious.

“Is that okay?”

“That’s up to you.”

She closed her eyes again.

“I’m too tired to be angry today.”

“That seems
