strangest thing about my life was how little drama remained in it.

I had once assumed peace would feel like triumph.

Instead, it felt like forgetting to check my phone.

It felt like leaving a bank statement unopened on the kitchen counter for an hour because I trusted myself to deal with it later.

It felt like Ethan buying a new lawn mower without consulting me because a lawn mower did not threaten our retirement, our house, or our marriage.

When he brought it home, he stood in the garage waiting for my reaction.

“What?” I sighed.

“Marriage has made you boring.”

Apparently that was hereditary language now.

The foundation grew slowly.

Harbor Rooms expanded to seven apartments, then nine.

We added two transitional units for families who needed more than thirty days but less than a permanent placement.

The program had begun with money connected to one of the worst episodes of my life.

Within a year, almost nobody on staff remembered that.

Good.

The money had become beds.

Utility deposits.

Grocery cards.

Lock changes.

Legal-fee vouchers.

Ordinary things.

I preferred ordinary things.

My relationship with Margaret settled into something equally ordinary.

She visited about twice a month.

Sometimes she took Lily to lunch.

Sometimes she came for dinner.

Sometimes weeks passed.

We did not discuss Gavin unless necessary.

That boundary had taken effort.

Not because Margaret wanted to talk constantly.

Because silence about him once carried its own history.

Now we could choose it without pretending he did not exist.

Claire visited twice that year.

She and Lily developed a shared obsession with puzzles.

I watched them cover the dining table with a thousand-piece image of a lighthouse while Ethan quietly moved loose pieces out of the path of drinks.

Family had become strangely assembled.

No simple tree.

More like branches grafted after storms.

Gavin remained in custody through most of that year.

Margaret visited him regularly.

She told me no details unless they directly involved me.

I appreciated that.

He wrote one more letter.

Not to me.

To Lily.

Margaret did not deliver it.

She called first.

“I haven’t opened it.”

I was standing in my office looking at invoices.

“What does the envelope
