assignments.”

“I don’t care.”

“Okay.”

“I do.”

“Okay.”

She stared at me.

“You’re annoying.”

“I’ve been told.”

Behind her, Ethan murmured, “Frequently.”

I gave him a look.

Maya almost smiled.

Almost.

That afternoon, she asked for the Wi-Fi password.

Then she asked if she could email her teacher.

Then if Jonah could watch cartoons.

Then if she could wash their clothes.

Each request came packaged as a command.

Each answer seemed to surprise her when it contained no hidden condition.

By evening, Jonah had placed Bear beside Felix on the couch.

Lily showed him her room.

Maya stood in the doorway but did not enter.

At dinner, Maya asked, “How long did Lily stay before you adopted her?”

The question froze the table.

Lily answered first.

“Forever.”

Maya rolled her eyes.

“That’s not what I meant.”

I put down my fork.

“She came to me when she was eight months old.”

“Was her mom arrested?”

“No.”

“Dead?”

Lily looked at me.

We had discussed this before.

“Yes,” I said gently.

Maya looked at Lily.

“So she couldn’t go back.”

“No.”

Lily’s expression became thoughtful.

Maya looked at me again.

“If our mom gets better, we go back.”

“Yes.”

“You won’t try to keep us.”

The question was sharper than a blade.

“No.”

She watched my face.

“If reunification is safe and approved, we will help you go home.”

Jonah stopped eating.

“Home?”

Maya immediately touched his arm.

“Maybe.”

He looked at me.

“Mommy?”

“We’re waiting for adults to figure out what happens.”

He frowned.

Then returned to his food.

Maya kept watching me.

“You mean that?”

“Yes.”

“Even if you like us?”

“Yes.”

The room went quiet.

She looked down at her plate.

“That’s weird.”

“What is?”

“Wanting us to leave.”

“I don’t want you to hurt.”

“That’s not an answer.”

She was right.

I thought carefully.

“If you stay long enough, I may care about you enough that goodbye hurts.”

Her fork stopped.

“But if going home safely is good for you, then my job is to help make that possible.”

She stared at me.

“That sounds stupid.”

“Sometimes love is inconvenient.”

Ethan gave me a look.

“That’s your wisdom?”

“It’s been a long day.”

Maya’s mouth twitched.

That night, she let Jonah sleep with the door partly closed.

At eleven, I heard a soft knock on ours.

Maya stood there.

No emergency.

No wheezing.

Just her.

“What happened?”

She looked down.

“Nothing.”

“Okay.”

She remained.

I waited.

“Do you have another blanket?”

“Yes.”

“It’s cold.”

“It is.”

I gave her one.

She took it.

Then asked, “Did you mean what you said?”

“About what?”

“Helping us go home.”

“Yes.”

She nodded slowly.

“Okay.”

She began walking away.

“Maya?”

She turned.

“You don’t have to take care of Jonah alone here.”

Her face changed.

“I know.”

She did not.

Not yet.

But maybe the words had somewhere to land.

The next morning, court extended placement for thirty days pending evaluation of their mother’s case.

Thirty days.

Not one night.

Not maybe tomorrow.

A month.

When Renee told us, I felt the weight instantly.

School.

Appointments.

Clothes.

Trauma.

Rules.

Routines.

Goodbyes.

Possibly.

Maya heard the number.

“Thirty?”

Renee nodded.

“For now.”

Maya is.”

“Thirty days isn’t temporary!”

Her breathing changed.

Jonah began crying.

Maya shouted at him.

“Stop!”

Then immediately looked horrified.

“I’m sorry.”

She covered her face.

“I’m sorry.”

I moved closer but did not touch her.

She slid down the wall.

“I promised him.”

“What?”

“That we’d go home.”

Her voice broke.

“I told him Mom would fix it.”

Jonah sat beside her.

He leaned against her shoulder.

Maya cried silently.

No dramatic sobbing.

Just tears she seemed furious to have.

I sat on the floor several feet away.

“You were trying to make him feel safe.”

She nodded.

“I lied.”

“You said what you hoped was true.”

“That’s lying.”

“Sometimes.”

She looked at me angrily.

I did not soften it.

“You don’t have to know what happens next.”

“I’m his sister.”

“Yes.”

“I’m supposed to know.”

“No.”

The word came firmly.

She stared.

“You are allowed to be nine.”

Her face crumpled.

That sentence did more than reassurance ever could.

She leaned forward and cried into her knees.

Jonah wrapped both arms around her.

I remained nearby.

No promises.

No fixing.

Just staying.

Later, after Renee left, Lily found me in the kitchen.

“Are they staying?”

“For a while.”

“How long?”

“Maybe a month.”

She thought about that.

“Okay.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“You can tell me if you’re not.”

She looked toward the hallway.

“Can Maya sleep in my room if she wants?”

“She may want her own space.”

“Okay.”

“And Lily?”

“Yes?”

“This may be hard.”

“I know.”

“You might get less attention sometimes.”

She frowned.

“That’s okay.”

“It may not feel okay when it happens.”

She considered.

“Then I’ll tell you.”

I smiled.

“That’s exactly what I need.”

She nodded.

Then said, “Can we get Jonah dinosaur cereal?”

“Is that a real thing?”

“Probably.”

And life continued.

Not gracefully.

Not perfectly.

But honestly.

That evening, all five of us sat around the table.

Jonah spilled milk.

Maya apologized for him.

I told her spills did not require apologies.

Lily argued with Ethan about whether peas counted as a punishment.

Jonah laughed.

Maya looked around the table.

She did not smile.

But for the first time, she stopped watching the front door.

And I realized safety did not arrive when a child entered a house.

It arrived in smaller pieces.

A door that stayed unlocked from the inside.

A glass that could spill without consequence.

An adult who answered the same question twice.

A night when someone else stayed awake.

A morning when breakfast appeared anyway.

We had room.

Now we had to prove that room meant more than square footage.

Click here to continue reading: PART 34:
