did not stop him.

His mother answered quickly.

“Gavin?”

“Mom, are you home?”

“Yes.”

“Is anyone with you?”

“No.”

“Lock the doors.”

A pause.

“What have you done now?”

Despite everything, Ethan laughed.

Gavin closed his eyes.

“Nothing today.”

“That is not reassuring.”

“Do you remember Daniel Reeves?”

Silence.

Long enough to answer the question.

“Yes.”

“Did Dad use him for estate planning?”

“Yes.”

“Did Daniel create any charitable trusts?”

Another pause.

“Why are you asking?”

“Because he is involved in the money Nora and I have been investigating.”

His mother became very quiet.

Then she said, “I wondered if that would come back.”

Gavin stared at the phone.

“What would come back?”

“The papers your father refused to sign.”

My pulse quickened.

“What papers?” I asked.

She heard me.

“Nora?”

“Yes.”

“Oh, honey.”

I hated how ominous affection had become.

“What papers?”

She sighed.

“Daniel wanted Gavin's father to become a trustee for a Harbor Mercy property fund.”

Gavin sat down.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He said it was an investment opportunity.”

“Did Dad agree?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I told him not to.”

Gavin stared.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Ellen Hayes called me.”

Nobody moved.

My mother.

Gavin's mother.

Two women on opposite sides of a marriage that had not even failed yet.

They had spoken about Daniel.

“When?” I asked.

“About seven years ago.”

Before the divorce.

Before Brenda became public.

Before everything.

“What did Mom tell you?”

“That Daniel Reeves was dangerous around trusts.”

Gavin whispered, “Why didn't you tell me?”

His mother answered with painful simplicity.

“Because you wouldn't have listened.”

He closed his eyes.

Again.

The same verdict.

Then she added, “And because Ellen asked me not to.”

I almost laughed.

Of course she did.

“What else did Mom say?”

“She said Daniel was trying to connect your family to Harbor Mercy assets.”

“Why?”

“She didn't know.”

Gavin's mother paused.

“But she gave me something.”

“What?”

“A copy of the documents Daniel wanted your father to sign.”

“Do you still have them?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“In my safe.”

Detective Vega stood.

“Do not touch them.”

Gavin relayed the instruction.

His mother sounded offended.

“I am seventy-five, not reckless.”

Gavin looked at me.

I raised an eyebrow.

He wisely said nothing.

Police collected the documents that afternoon.

They contained a proposed trustee appointment.

Gavin's father would have gained authority over one of Harbor Mercy’s property entities.

But buried in the final pages was a successor clause.

If he died or resigned, authority transferred to his eldest child.

Gavin.

Daniel had been trying to place Gavin inside the land structure before the divorce ever happened.

That changed the timeline again.

Gavin stared at his own name.

“He was setting me up before Brenda and I—”

He stopped.

“Before I left Nora.”

“Yes,” Detective Vega said.

“Why?”

She looked toward Daniel’s video.

“Perhaps because you were useful.”

“For what?”

Nobody answered.

Then Gavin's mother, still on speakerphone, did.

“Because of me.”

Gavin frowned.

“What?”

She sounded tired.

“Your father wasn't the one Daniel first approached.”

“Who was?”

“Me.”

“Why?”

“Because my maiden name is Mercer.”

Gavin looked confused.

I was too.

Then Dad stood.

“Mercer?”

“Yes.”

His face went pale.

“What?”

Dad stared at Gavin's mother.

“Your family owned Mercer Coastal Holdings?”

“Long ago.”

Dad sat down slowly.

I looked between them.

“What is Mercer Coastal Holdings?”

He answered.

“The company that donated the largest of the three Harbor Mercy parcels.”

Gavin's mother went silent.

The land Daniel wanted did not connect only to my mother.

It connected to Gavin's family too.

And suddenly his obsession with binding our names together made far more sense.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: Gavin’s Family
