Ethan.”

“Yes.”

My anger sharpened.

“You gave him those records?”

“No.”

“He already had copies.”

“How?”

“I don't know.”

There it was again.

But this time Marianne continued.

“I refused to help him remove Ethan as successor.”

Ethan frowned.

“Remove me for whom?”

Marianne began crying.

“That is why Daniel is looking for the old certificates.”

“Who does he want appointed?”

“He prepared a replacement.”

“Name?”

Silence.

“Marianne.”

“I'm sorry.”

“Whose name?”

She answered.

“Gavin Albright.”

Gavin stared at the phone.

“What?”

I felt cold.

Daniel wanted Gavin controlling Mom’s restitution trust.

Gavin shook his head.

“I never agreed.”

“I know,” Marianne said.

“Then how?”

“Forged consent.”

“Why me?”

“Because if you became trustee and money disappeared, the entire story would end where Daniel always wanted it to end.”

“With Gavin looking guilty,” Ethan said.

“Yes.”

“And Nora’s family connected to him.”

“Yes.”

A perfect circle.

My mother accused once.

Gavin accused later.

Me trapped between them.

“Where are the certificates?” Detective Vega asked.

Marianne hesitated.

“I think Ellen hid them.”

“Where?”

“She once told me there was only one place Richard Reeves would never library?”

“The elementary school.”

“Why would Richard never go there?”

Marianne gave a broken laugh.

“Because Ellen once told him if he ever came near her daughter, she would expose everything.”

Me.

I had been nine.

Mom had lost her career and still found a way to make him afraid.

“What are we looking for?” I asked.

“A blue trust ledger and two embossed certificates.”

“Where in the library?”

“I don't know.”

The school had been renovated twice.

Mom had retired years later.

Thousands of books had moved through those shelves.

Then Dad spoke through the conference phone.

“The donated collection.”

“What?”

“After Ellen died, the school created a memorial reading room.”

I remembered.

Mom's personal books had been donated.

Hundreds of them.

Dad continued.

“She insisted they take the old reference set from her study.”

“What reference set?”

“Encyclopedias.”

My breath caught.

Mom never used those encyclopedias.

She refused to throw them away.

I had teased her about them for years.

Twenty-four blue volumes.

Heavy.

Outdated.

Always kept together.

Ethan understood at the same moment.

“Blue ledger.”

I looked at him.

“Hidden inside a blue book.”

Detective Vega stood.

“We're going to the school.”

But before anyone moved, Brenda interrupted.

“Wait.”

“What?”

“Marianne says Daniel already knows.”

My stomach dropped.

“How?”

“He asked her about Ellen’s books.”

“When?”

“This morning.”

The room erupted into movement.

Detective Vega called local officers.

I called the school principal.

No answer.

School had dismissed an hour earlier.

Then Dad said, “Nora.”

“What?”

“Lily.”

Everything inside me stopped.

“What about Lily?”

“Doesn't her after-school program use that school?”

For one second, I could not breathe.

Lily’s program rotated locations.

This week—

Oh God.

Ethan was already calling.

I grabbed my keys.

Detective Vega ordered us to wait.

I did not.

Neither did Ethan.

The elementary school was twelve minutes away.

We made it in nine behind a police cruiser.

Children were still inside.

Safe.

Staff confused.

No active threat.

I ran into the after-school room.

Lily looked up from a puzzle.

“Mom?”

I crossed the room and hugged her so tightly she complained.

“I can't breathe.”

“Sorry.”

I loosened my arms.

Ethan crouched beside us.

Lily looked between us.

“What's wrong?”

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

“That's adult talk for something is wrong.”

Even terrified, I almost laughed.

“You're safe.”

“Okay.”

That was all she needed.

I handed her to Ethan.

“Take her home.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

He studied me.

Then nodded.

My choice.

Always.

Police searched the memorial reading room.

The encyclopedias were still there.

Twenty-four blue volumes.

One by one, officers inspected them.

Volume eleven felt heavier.

Inside, carved into the pages, was a cavity.

Empty.

No ledger.

No certificates.

Only a folded piece of paper.

Detective Vega opened it.

Mom's handwriting.

If Daniel finds this before Nora does, then I failed.

My hands shook.

Below it was a second sentence.

If Nora finds it first, tell her the books were never the hiding place.

I stared.

“What?”

Dad read over my shoulder.

Then laughed.

Not happily.

In astonishment.

“Your mother.”

“What does it mean?”

He pointed at the final line.

She had written:

I kept them where Nora first learned that a safe place can still have an exit.

A memory struck me.

I was nine.

After Mom lost her bank job, she had begun volunteering somewhere before becoming a librarian.

A place she took me after school.

I had spent afternoons drawing at a desk while women spoke quietly in nearby rooms.

A family shelter.

The building that decades later became Harbor Children's Advocacy Center.

The same organization that received Mom's ten thousand dollars.

The same place where she met Ethan.

The same place that inspired Harbor Hope.

I looked at Detective Vega.

“I know where she put them.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: My Mother Hid the Final
