frowned.

“What?”

I repeated it.

Eight hundred and forty-two thousand dollars.

Rebecca went still.

“That came from Grandma Ruth?”

“Mostly.”

Elaine explained that investments had grown for years.

Carol had separated the funds shortly after her diagnosis.

Rebecca looked horrified rather than pleased.

“I don’t want it.”

Elaine heard.

“That is your decision.”

Rebecca paced.

“I don’t want her money.”

I said, “It isn’t Ruth’s anymore.”

“It came from her.”

“Yes.”

“She used money to control everyone.”

“Yes.”

Rebecca stopped.

Then looked at Carol’s note on the table.

I can refuse to let those resources remain part of the secrecy.

Her expression changed.

“What did Mom want me to do with it?”

Elaine answered.

“She specifically refused to direct you.”

Of course.

Rebecca laughed.

“She really committed to this choice thing.”

Elaine said, “Carol told me if she instructed you to donate it, keep it, invest it, or burn it, she would still be controlling what happened.”

Rebecca sat.

“What happens if I refuse it?”

“Depending on the trust terms, it passes to your children.”

“So refusing doesn’t make it disappear.”

“No.”

“What if I accept it?”

“Then it becomes yours to manage within the trust structure.”

Rebecca looked at me.

“What would you do?”

I almost answered.

Then stopped.

“No.”

She frowned.

“What?”

“I’m not deciding for you.”

“Dad.”

“You can ask for information.”

“I’m asking for advice.”

“That’s different.”

She smiled faintly.

“You’re learning too.”

“Yes.”

Rebecca looked at the old bracelet around her fingers.

Then at Carol’s letter.

“I want to think.”

“Good.”

Elaine said she would send the documents.

We ended the call.

That evening, I put the photographs into a new album.

Not hidden.

Not boxed.

On a shelf.

My life before Carol did not threaten my life with Carol.

It never had.

The threat existed only in secrecy.

Before bed, I stopped beside Carol’s photograph.

For days, looking at it triggered accusation.

Why?

Tonight another thought arrived first.

You were scared for a very long time.

Not absolution.

Not forgiveness.

Understanding.

I touched the frame.

“I miss you.”

Nothing happened.

No punishment.

No betrayal of Anna.

No betrayal of myself.

I simply missed my wife.

And for the first time, I allowed that feeling to remain uncorrected.

<a
