Rebecca’s words to me that morning was not lost on anyone.

An hour later, Anna climbed into the passenger seat of my truck.

She brought one overnight bag and a small wooden box.

I noticed it immediately.

“What’s that?”

She rested both hands on it.

“Something I should have returned a long time ago.”

The ring.

I knew without asking.

I started the engine.

We left Harbor Ridge beneath a sky threatening rain.

For the first thirty miles, neither of us spoke.

Then Anna looked at Carol’s dented thermos in the cup holder.

“She still used that?”

I glanced over.

“You recognize it?”

“I gave it to her.”

My foot eased slightly off the accelerator.

“What?”

“She visited me in 1998.”

I stared at the road.

“Carol went to Pennsylvania?”

“Yes.”

“She told me she was at a nursing conference.”

Anna turned toward the window.

“She came to see me.”

“Why?”

“Rebecca was twelve.”

I remembered that year.

Middle school.

Braces.

A science fair volcano that erupted across our dining room table.

“What happened when she was twelve?”

Anna’s answer came quietly.

“She asked Carol why she didn’t have baby pictures from the hospital.”

My hands tightened on the steering wheel.

“And?”

“Carol panicked.”

I looked at Anna.

“She thought Rebecca was starting to suspect.”

I forced my eyes back to the road.

“Did she tell you then?”

“No.”

“Why did she visit?”

“To ask whether I still wanted the truth told.”

“What did you say?”

Anna looked at the wooden box in her lap.

“I told her yes.”

The road seemed to narrow ahead.

“So Carol had another chance.”

“Yes.”

“And she chose silence again.”

“Yes.”

I breathed through my nose.

“Was that the last time you saw her?”

“No.”

I glanced over.

“How many times did you see my wife?”

Anna hesitated.

“Four.”

I almost missed the lane.

“Four?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“1986. 1998. 2009.
