back at the house.

Then at me.

“It really is just a cabin.”

I smiled.

“It always was.”

He drove downhill.

At the gate, he stopped.

My phone rang.

“What?”

“You have to close it.”

I laughed.

Apparently Dara had contaminated him.

“I know.”

“Just reminding you.”

“Get out.”

He laughed and drove away.

I pressed the control.

The gate began closing.

Halfway across, it paused.

A branch had fallen across the sensor.

For one absurd second I stared at it.

Then I walked down.

Moved the branch.

Pressed the button again.

The gate closed.

No symbolism required.

Sometimes a gate was simply a gate.

But standing there, I thought about the first day Dara arrived with Richard.

How threatened I had felt.

How certain she had been.

How much damage followed.

Then I thought about every person who eventually came through that gate only after asking.

Dara.

Dad.

Alicia.

Raymond.

Consent had become our quiet family language.

Not perfect.

Not automatic.

Practiced.

That evening Dara called.

“Raymond told me you let him visit.”

“News travels.”

“How was it?”

“Fine.”

“Just fine?”

“Yes.”

She sounded disappointed.

“You want a dramatic ending?”

“No.”

“Yes, you do.”

“Maybe.”

I smiled.

“He said the cabin was smaller than he expected.”

She laughed.

“I thought that too.”

“You were trying to seize it.”

“I was not—”

She stopped.

“Fine. Fair.”

We sat in silence over the phone.

Then she asked, “Are we okay?”

Same question Raymond had once asked.

Still too large.

“We’re better.”

She laughed.

“You stole that from me.”

“No. Raymond did.”

“Family property.”

“Careful.”

We both laughed.

Outside, darkness settled over the ridge.

The cabin belonged to me.

Laurel Bottom belonged to Thomas.

Grandpa’s papers belonged to the archive.

The wooden horse remained with Dad.

The stories belonged to whoever remembered them.

And none of those forms of belonging meant the same thing anymore.

Click here to continue reading: PART 25: Dad’s Decision About Grandpa’s Wooden Horse Reopened an Old Question, but This Time Nobody Tried to Answer It for Him

Two years after Dara first arrived at my gate with Richard Holloway, another white SUV stopped at the bottom of my driveway.
