again.

More specifically this time.

He wrote that prison therapy had forced him to examine why he became obsessed with turning historical research into claims.

I distrusted the phrasing immediately.

Not because it was necessarily false.

Because Martin had always been skilled with narratives.

I kept reading.

He described starting as a researcher who enjoyed finding overlooked records.

Clients reacted most strongly when discoveries changed what they believed they were owed.

He became addicted to that reaction.

Not money alone.

Influence.

He liked telling people something that reorganized their families.

I stopped.

Dara became especially compelling because Raymond provided such detailed psychological information.

He wrote that he recognized our family dynamics almost immediately.

Dara read aloud one sentence from her letter.

“I knew your certainty would make Evelyn more resistant, and her resistance would make you more certain.”

She lowered the manipulator can perceive something true.

The truth does not cleanse the manipulation.

I kept reading.

Near the end, Martin said he did not expect forgiveness.

Good.

Then he wrote that he hoped we would consider allowing our experience to be used in training for fraud investigators and genealogical organizations.

I laughed.

“What?”

“He has a project for us.”

Dara found the same request.

“Absolutely not.”

I looked at thought he touched.

Neither did Raymond.

Neither did Grandpa.

Neither did Dara.

Neither did I.

At the end of my letter, Martin included one final statement.

I want you to know I never intended for anyone to lose a home.

I felt anger immediately.

Dara read my face.

“What?”

I handed her the page.

She read it.

“Oh.”

Helen.

A sentence designed as remorse could also function as self-protection.

Intent.

That old effective client I ever had because once you believed something was your responsibility, you could not tolerate leaving it unfinished.

Dara stared at the sentence.

Then laughed.

“What?”

“He still thinks he knows how to hook me.”

“How?”

She handed me the page.

Below that sentence:

I started.

Same lever.

Different direction.

Maybe Martin consciously manipulated even now.

Maybe the language was habit.

It did not matter.

Dara documents.

Nothing more.

That autumn, Reeves invited Dara to speak at a professional training session about fraud involving genealogical and historical claims.

She accepted.

On her own terms.

No Martin letter.

No obligation.

She asked whether I wanted to participate.

I declined.

She said okay.

A month later, I changed my mind.

Not because she pressured me.

She did not ask again.

I contacted Reeves myself.

I agreed to discuss what current property owners professionals.

Genealogists.

I spoke for twenty minutes.

Dara spoke after me.

She described being a target who also became an instrument against someone else.

That distinction caught attention.

One investigator asked how professionals could recognize a person becoming dangerously certain.

Dara thought before answering.

“Don’t ask only what evidence convinced them.”

The room waited.

“Ask what evidence they would accept as proof they’re dispute.

One morning snow covered the porch railing.

I made coffee and walked outside.

The new chairs were still sturdy.

Annoyingly, Dara had been right about them.

My phone buzzed.

A photograph from Thomas.

Laurel Bottom beneath snow.

The foundation barely visible.

The creek dark between white replied with a photograph of the wooden horse on his bookshelf.

Mom’s glasses hung from its ears.

I laughed.

Then another message
