nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then Helen came through the doors behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Michelle held her arm.<\/p>\n<p>Helen saw Dara.<\/p>\n<p>They hugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going home,\u201d Helen said.<\/p>\n<p>Dara looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo your daughter\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michelle smiled too.<\/p>\n<p>They had found a small condominium.<\/p>\n<p>Restitution had not paid for it.<\/p>\n<p>Helen had used what remained of her savings, and her children helped with the down payment.<\/p>\n<p>Smaller than her old house.<\/p>\n<p>Different town.<\/p>\n<p>Hers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get the keys Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dara\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s wonderful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then added something I remembered long afterward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t the home I lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She squeezed Michelle\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m done letting that decide whether the next one counts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the drive home, Dara repeated the sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Twice.<\/p>\n<p>I understood why.<\/p>\n<p>Our entire family needed
